Can't dial out or receive calls intermittently with 3GS and 3.1
I tried to call my wife this morning and the call said dialing for like 30 seconds and then nothing happened. I tried to call my phone from my land line and it went straight to voicemail. I have a great 3G signal with all bars in a location the phone normally works. I reset the phone and it started working fine.
It did the same thing again tonight at my house when I tried to call my phone with my wife's phone. I never had this issue until I upgraded the FW. The phone looks like it is working fine, but the cell phone functionality is not responding.
Apple, I hope you don't think that by not issuing a patch that fixes the problems in my 1st generation iPhone, you're going to force me to upgrade. What you're actually going to do is force me to upgrade to a different phone altogether. *FIX THE DROPPED CALLS*. This has gotten ridiculous.
So far 3.1.2 has cured my issues on my iphone 3g and I went to Vermont this weekend from NY and went in and out of edge, 3g, wifi, and had know problems. So far so good.
after the 3.1.2 update all is well with my iphone 3.gs -- (knocking on wood very loudly).
Thank you Apple!
I have to say -- this is much better than the response of my Verizon FIOS tech support -- which on my complaint that my motorola DVR stops responding about twice a day said: "we are aware of this bug. Make sure you don't ever use the channel up/down button ⚠ and reboot whenever it stops responding."
So yes, Apple could have publicly acknowledged the problem -- but AFAIK fixing it relatively quickly works for me.
And to the discussions moderator -- STILL no iPhone OS 3.1 option in the OS dropdown when posting a new message!
ive had thins problem, UK-side, and today ive had a warrenty replacement, brought it home, did a restore from backup and the same problem occurs!!!!! :o( i wipes the iphone (on the off chance it was something wrong with my backup settings??) and STILL THE SAME problem!!!
seiriously! this is becoming a joke! ive got a nice new iphone 3GS but intermittently cant make or recieve calls, txts etc..... someone, ANYONE, with advice please do so! :o$
The 3.2 update seems to have successfully resolved the problems I listed previously in this thread, so I'm considering things closed from my standpoint. I hope others are having the same luck as I.
I applied the 3.1.2 update to my 3.0 phone last night. The update went smoothly, and I'm happy to report that after almost 24 hours, I have not had any problems. No comas, no battery problems, no problem at all. If that changes, I'll report back...
im not of the FIRM belif this is definitely a OS issue, there is a way of downgrading to version 3.0 (where none of these issues seemed to happen) but its both a little bit complicated and difficult (just google iphone downgrade 3.1 to 3.0)
ive HAD a nice new iphone from the O2 store and done my own reset, the problems just keep on going, with version 3.1.2...... because i need my phone for work and cant really afford to miss calls im now using a crappy little LG thing, well when i say crappy, at least it works unfortunately unlike my lovely iphone sitting in its BOX!
APPLE - PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE realise there is some random MAJOR flaw with versions 3.1, 3.1.2 where some people CAN NOT MAKE OR RECIEVE CALLS, TEXTS ARE DELAYED by hours! and it still shows 5 bars of signal.
The major issue here is that the whole problem is totally intermittent some times it works, sometime it doesnt! but also when its NOT working you DONT KNOW ABOUT IT! also its not happening to everyone, which worries me that Apple arent taking this seriously enough and we could be waiting weeks or even months for an update! :o$
My wife (3G) and I (3GS) have recently upgraded to 3.1.2 and have been having problems making calls. Sometimes I can't call out and sometimes I can hear the other person and they can't hear me. Seems to be intermittent. Sometimes moving around helps but we both have anywhere from 3-5 bars when the problem strikes so it doesn't appear to be location-based. Hopefully Apple releases a further update SOON!

I'm (still) having the exact same problems with 3.1.2.
after much trouble, it seems that the problem lies with the 3G service, i was advised to turn it off, which i have (after a restore and selecting it as a new phone) and it seems to be working ok now, so im unfortunately gonna have to leave the 3G feature off until they release another version....
hope this works for you & others too!
heres a reply i had in a different thread....
"Hi Jimmy!
yes, we have disabled the 3G network. That's the only time anything comes through. Just for chits and giggles I turned 3G back on this morning for about 15 minutes. during those 15 minutes, I missed 12 calls, straight to vm. However, no chime UNTIL, I disabled 3g again.. and it took 2 hrs for it to chime, AFTER being back on EDGE."
