Can't dial out or receive calls intermittently with 3GS and 3.1

I tried to call my wife this morning and the call said dialing for like 30 seconds and then nothing happened. I tried to call my phone from my land line and it went straight to voicemail. I have a great 3G signal with all bars in a location the phone normally works. I reset the phone and it started working fine.

It did the same thing again tonight at my house when I tried to call my phone with my wife's phone. I never had this issue until I upgraded the FW. The phone looks like it is working fine, but the cell phone functionality is not responding.

Join the club!!! I have 3G activated with full bars and I it will take about 15 minutes for it to load my email. I cannot check voicemail, load webpages, or send text messages. They need to fix this soon!!! I never had a problem until the 3.1 update.

Also the other day I got about 5 calls, my phone never rang for any of them and I had 3 voicemails from those calls which never showed up. It never even showed up as recent calls. I had to restart my phone for any of these to show that I missed the calls.

I've been having the same problems with mine. I have the 3G and even before the 3.1 update I was having this problem. I've also been having a lot of problems with calls being dropped, but I think that is more AT&T. I have also had my phone totally crash and become unresponsive twice now. The first time I connected it to my computer and it read the phone and I was able to restore it. The last time, after the 3.1 update, the computer didn't even read it and it wouldn't charge. I took it to the Apple store and they were too busy so I had to come back the next day. Of course my phone began to work before my appointment so Apple said they couldn't do anything. They did tell me however that when it happens again to bring my phone in so they could verify it was not working and they would exchange it for a new one. Now I just have to make sure I sched. an appt. for the next time my phone crashes.

Well I fell better knowing this isn't just ME! I was just freaking out. This started yesterday (I updated to 3.1 maybe two days ago) or at least yesterday that I noticed. I'll head over to the AT&T store today & see if they can switch out my SIM & cross my fingers that it will work. If not, I guess it's a restore- which I so do not want to do... ugh.

I got a new SIM card from AT&T three days ago and so far I have not had the problem anymore. Before that, getting new phone, restoring did not help. So, I am curious to find out if a new SIM card also takes care of the problem for other people.

I tried switching in and out airplane mode when I started having the issue today on the way home from work. It did not start working again. It would not even try to call anymore when I came out of airplane mode. I could click a contact, but nothing would happen. The phone did not even attempt to dial even though it had 5 bars and 3G present.

I power cycled the phone and it started working fine. This is so frustrating. I should have just drove straight to the Apple store, so I could get it documented.

I was having this same problem for several days after I updated very early on 9/10. Then on another thread I read that if I turned off my 3G network and only used the E(dge) network my calls and texts would work like they were supposed to. So, last Sunday or Monday I switched over to the E network and stayed there for the entire week.

Last night I switched back over to 3G and so far so good! Previously on 3G my phone would get "stuck" as I called it or go into the "zombie" state as others have called it, at least 3-4 times a day. A power off/on and/or hard boot would fix it for a while until it happened again. So far its been almost 18 hours and its still working. Every now and then I'll send a "test" text to a friend just to check and make sure its still working.

I'm not saying that switching over to the E network for 5-7 days is a fix, I'm well aware that it may not have been a factor in my phone working properly again at all. But since so many people are having the same problem and all the Apple & their "volunteers" won't admit that there is even a problem at all I thought I would post my experience just in case it might help someone else. Especially since we're not getting help from the source of the problem.

I've been having this "randomly loosing connections with the networks without any visible indication" problem, I don't know if I had it before 3.1 but I realized after 3.1, Anyways, after searching a bit in forums, it seems the cause of this problem is the Push notifications, turn off all the push notifications for all apps, including mail and calender, then use your phone like this for a while, and see if anything changes, mine is working fine so far, the problem seems to be solved. Give it a try and tell us if it works or not
