Wi-Fi on iPod Touch unable to join the network even with correct password
I'll throw in my two cents on this issue. I have a new iPod Touch that refuses to connect to my home wi-fi network unless I turn off all wireless security at my router, which is a D-Link DI-524 b/g. The iPod has connected just fine with no security enabled, but as soon as I enable WEP (either 64-bit or 128-bit -- can't use WPA/WPA2 due to limitations on some of my PCs' wireless adapters), no go. I enter the SSID, select WEP and enter the password correctly, but the iPod displays the message "Unable to join the network" with a "dismiss" button. Just in case, I updated to software on the iPod to ver 3.1.1 but I still have the same issue. I have also reset the iPod to no avail. Obviously, I do not want to run my wireless network with no security, which means the iPod's functionality is greatly reduced unless I can somehow get it to connect. Any other ideas?
Your problem is a classic one for the touch. WEP is interpreted differently by Apple devices then Windows devices which leads to a basic conflict. You can get it to work with a password if you set your 64 bit password to exactly 5 characters or your 128 bit password to 13 characters. The alternative is to open up your router control panel and copy down the hexadecimal code your router generated in response to the password you use. On your touch, use that hex code instead of the password when logging in.
I would also make sure your router's firmware is up to date. 3.0/3.1.1 seems to be a bit touchy with DHCP and less than up to date firmware.
Had the identical issues prior to 3.0, even with a 26 hex digit password. I was being prompted for passwords on wireless networks that didn't have them, and it absolutely refused to connect to my WEP enabled network at home. 3.0 fixed that problem (although it disgusted me to have to pay $10 to get it).
Same problem here. New ipod touch 2G (bought last month), upgraded to 3.1.1 and the wifi is now crippled and will not connect to any secure network. I don't seem to be able to restore to 3.0 (which worked fine).
I've been to the local apple store where the 'concierge' demonstrated that it could connect fine to unsecure wifi, and then suggested that I and my employer should remove the security from our wifi as it was the 'security' that was the problem.
I have asked for help in rolling it back to 3.0, and will have the dubious pleasure of a visit to the Genius bar later this week.
I've got a similar problem, been connected before and never had a problem before. Now it won't connect - i've tried to "Forget Network" and reconnect but hasn't worked. I don't want to switch off security - anyone got any ideas?
Can I jump on the no Wifi bandwagon, too? I am running a 2G with the 3.111 upgrade which worked without problems from release date to this week. I have a Dlink 615 router whose firmware I just updated last night and have WAP security with a 12 character password. I cannot connect my iPod to the network at all. I tried some free access points on Saturday to no avail as well.
I lost my signal on Wednesday night soemtime overnight as I was reading e-mails before bed then it was gone when I woke up. I can pick up the signals from other routers in the neighbourhood. It will not connect to mine, though. I have cycled then reset the router, reset the iPod and still nothing. I Have removed the security on the router to see if it will connect and it still won't connect even though the DNS addy is correct. Could this be a firewall issue perhaps?
Obviously the answer from the concierge was incorrect. Connecting to a secure network all depends on how it is secured and what is being used for encryption. If you are trying to connect to a secure corporate wireless network, it is a much more intense process than your home server. Apple has written an enterprise deployment manual and software to help IT departments service their iPod touch/iPhone users.
If you are trying to log into a normal wireless network, WEP, WPA, or WPA2 secured, WEP is most likely to give you problems with the touch. WPA-psk and WPA2-psk are pretty good bets to work as long as you remember they are case sensitive and some special characters that are not on the touch keyboard can cause problems.
Since you don't state what you are trying to connect to or the type of encryption used then specific help is a little hard to give.
Try resetting your network settings - tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Once your iPod has restarted, log back into your network using this method:
1. Tap Settings > WiFi > Other Network and inputing your network name
2. Tell the touch what type of security you are using
3. Re-enter your password
If you are using WEP, either reset your passwords to 5 characters (64 bit) or 13 characters (128 bit). As an alternative, you can use the hex code generated by your router for key 1 in place of a password.
I too was at first unable to join the home network even with correct password. I read a couple of threads and really felt more confused. First, I found a page on the touch that let me choose what type of security my Wi-Fi was using (WPA) and then I rechecked my home network "name" and entered it along with my router password which is case sensitive, my router password is different from the network password. I think the key to getting on is setting what type of security your Wi-Fi is using. I just got my itouch this am, now I'm using it to browse the Apps Store! Woohoo!!
Tried that too. STill unable to connect. I am now thinking this might be a netowrk issue as the iPod recognizes the router, but can't log me on? Am goign to get a techie friend to look at my network set up. There was a problem with my ISP last week that might have led to this!
My friend brought over his iPhone to see if he could connect to my network and he had no issues doing so when I logged him in with my password. So, the netwrok and router are working fine. We did a complete system restore through iTunes, setting it up as a new iPod rather than restoring from an earlier version and I still cannot connect. My network set up is OK, so it is definitely my iPod.
Any new ideas? The unit is a refurb that is only 10 months in my possession. Is the next step going to my local Apple Store to see what they can do?
I can connect using WPA, the router recognises the Touch (3.1.1), shows its MAC address, but I can't actually do anything as all it does when I try to use the browser is attempt to connect, which never works.

What do you get when you tap the blue arrow (>) next to your network name? If your IP address starts with 169.x, you are connected to your router but not the network. Things that cause this are WEP encryption, old router/firmware, router that needs to be restarted.
