HP Color Laserjet 4700 and HP Designjet 5000PS

I've been working for 4 days trying to get these 2 printers to work in Snow Leopard to no avail.
I've Reset, Reinstalled several times. The 4700 will never install and Designjet installs, but will never communicate and print.
I also have a HP Laserjet 4200 that works absolutely fine. Go Figure.
I've been in contact with Apple and have done everything the Apple tech has said but am now awaiting further communications from him as they are working on it.
All the printers work fine off of a Leopard Computer that is sharing the printer under Appletalk.
(Is bonjour just a new name for appletalk????)
If I ever get it fixed I'll post an update.

If you install the latest HP drivers via software update then you'll need to boot SL in 64bit mode for the printers to work. If there is no real need to run in 32bit mode then leave the system in 64 bit kernel mode.

Shutdown & Restart while holding the 6 and 4 key during boot up release after 10 seconds, login print and see what happens for some reason these driver only work in 64 bit kernel mode. To return to 32bit Shutdown & Restart while holding the 3 & 2 key during startup.

TigerSmith, you know that Snow Leopard no longer supports AppleTalk, or don't you?

So, in the Add Printer dialog's "Default" browser, do you even see your printer? (Print & Fax preference, click "+" icon) If not, you will need to figure out the IP address of your printer, add set up your printer queue in the IP panel of Add Printer dialog.

All,

As has been pointed out in this thread an elsewhere, AppleTalk is no longer supported in Snow Leopard. So what you need to do with these older PostScript devices is add the printer queue using HP JetDirect Socket.

Also note, just because you are using and IP address you got off the printer, doesn't mean the IP address is correct. If you have been using AppleTalk the IP address your printer has may in fact not be routable from your existing setup. Your best bet is probably to do a cold reset of your printer, but it may require you to actually go down into its networking menu's and configure it.

If you're unsure feel free to post the IP address and subnet mask of your computer as well as the IP address of your printer and I'll take a look.

Just trying to help.

I did a cold reset! Actually bought a brand new HP Color Laserjet 4700n, and still doesn't work. Yes the printer shows up in the print & Fax window after I click the + sign. The printer driver is found, but when you click install the window stays down forever as the little barber pole spins forever. I also talked with apple twice but still no solution. They did put out the new HP Drivers but Nothing!
I can still use the printer if it is shared from a computer no running Snow Leopard....
any help will be appreciated

Hi Andrew,
I'm still having problems getting the HP Color laser Jet 4700 and the Designjet 5000PS to work under snow leopard. I have done everything everyone has suggested to no avail. My HP Laserjet 4200 installed and works fine in SL.
So far Ive only installed SL on My MacPro Core Duo and my Laptop. Ive left Tiger on the other computers on my network, as I an print to the printers utilizing the shared printer from a machine on the network.
I have tried connecting to both printers direct with an ethernet patch cable also crossover cable and neither works.
The HP Color laser Jet 4700 gets all the way to choosing a driver, but never installs it as the Blie & white barber pole goes forever. The Designjet will install all the way but when you print to it, It can't find the printer.
Ive done a cold reset on the 4700, Nothing. Then I bought a New 4700, but still acts the same way.
What in the world could be the solution for this problem?
I will even call you if I can to help trouble shoot this.

Have you tried printing out the configuration page for your Color LaserJet 4700 and setting up the Print queue manually using the HP Jetdirect - Socket option under the IP tab?

If that doesn't work, if you post the IP address and subnet mask of your computer and the IP addresses of your printer I can take a look and see if its a routing problem. And if you're uncomfortable posting your IP information let me know and we'll work out a different method.

One thing to remember is that AppleTalk was dropped from Snow Leopard. Most likely under Leopard your Color LaserJet 4700 was added via AppleTalk. Under SnowLeopard your LaserJet 4200 was probably added with Bonjour. And just because you cold reset your device does not mean you can find it with Bonjour. You'll have to add in manually via the IP address.

Just trying to help.

Andrew,
Actually after looking into the IP addresses again I discovered both the printers were on default address 192.0.0.192. I changed the ip address of the 4700 and now it actually works great. The reason the 4200 was working is because I changed the IP address over a year ago to get it to work on Windows XP machine, and I had forgot about that.
I still have the problem with the Designjet 5000PS and yes I just did the Software update tonight from HP. How can I change the IP address on the Designjet, as it is still 192.0.0.192.
It should be posted that HP printers that have always been on appletalk probably have that default address and has to be changed for bonjour to find it. It was very simple but even the apple techs haven't figured it out to my knowledge.
thanks, and hope you can answer the problem of manually setting an IP address on the Designjet 5000PS.
thanks,
Franklin

Franklin,

I don't have a Designjet 5000PS to test with, but I think I have come up with a working solution. On the front panel, in the Printer setup options, select IO setup. From there TCP/IP, and then Manual Settings.

Here are some useful references:

Good luck in getting things setup right. Feel free to post back if your run into problems (or even if you don't to let me know you have it working).

Finally got everything working, and it took for ever trying to reconfigure the IP address on the Designjet 5000.
Here's how to do it:
Configuring TCPIIP on the HP Designjet 5000, 5500, 800, and 500
series printers
NOTE: A delay of approximately 30 seconds may be expected between each step.
1. From the Front Panel, use the arrow buttons to highlight the printer icon and press ENTER.
2. Press the Up arrow key until llO Setup appears. Press ENTER,
3. Press the Down arrow to Card Setup and press ENTER. Highlight Configuration,
ENTER,
4. From the Front Panel message of Cfg Network=No, press ENTER.
5. Press the Up arrow key to change to Yes. Press ENTER,
6. Press the Up arrow key until Cfg TCP/IP=No appears, Press ENTER.
7. Press the Up arrow key to change to Yes. Press ENTER.
8. Press the Up arrow until BOOTP=Yes appears. Press ENTER.
9. Press the Up arrow key to change to No. Press ENTER.
and press
NOTE: If BOOTP=Yes, the printer is configured to retrieve its TCP/IP parameters
overthe network from a BOOTP, RARP, or DHCP server. If BOOTP=NO, the
printer is configured to accept TCP/IP parameters from the Front Panel.
10. On HP Jetdirect print servers with firmware L.20.04 or greater, press the Up arrow
DHCP=yes appears. Press ENTER.
11. Press the Up arrow key to change to No. Press ENTER.
12. Press the Up arrow key until IP Byte1=xxx appears.

b. Press the Up or Down arrow key to change the number.
c. Press ENTER.
key to until
d. Press the Up arrow key to continue to IP Byte2=xxx.
e. Press ENTER.
14. Configure the remaining bytes ofthe IP address in the same manner.
15. Configure the subnet mask bytes (SM), syslog server IP address (LG), default gateway (GW),
and timeout (TIMEOUT) inthe same manner.
NOTE: When the HP Jetdirect print server is given a syslog server IP address, it can
generate syslog messages and send them to that. If no syslog sewer is on the
network, skip this setting,
16. The TIMEOUT parameter default is 90 seconds. Up to 3,600 seconds can be conhgured. lf set
to the timeout feature of the HP Jetdirect print server is disabled —- TCP/IP connections
will remain open until closed by the sewer.
17. To save this information:
a.Designjet 5000: Press the BACK button three times, then press the TOP button to
