HP and Snow Leopard - HP software uninstall required?

Before upgrading to SL, Is it necessary or beneficial to uninstall the HP software currently in the hard drive - particularly the files installed by the HP CD that came with the printer / all-in-one?

iMac, macBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

While it is not necessary to uninstall your current HP software prior to installing Snow Leopard, they will no longer function afterwards and you may find it confusing. It is easier to uninstall them first than to figure out which HP software to delete after the move to Snow Leopard.

Thanks, Andrew. We've got a Laserjet 4100dtn, Laserjet 4050tn, Laserjet 1300, Laserjet M2727nf, none of which were problematic until SL (M2727 shows up, but only as fax, unable to add as printer). Connected to network through ethernet hub. Apple tech suggested rebuilding entire printer list in printer setup. No effect. Ran HP Printer Driver update 2.2. No effect. I'm guessing maybe I need to trash some HP files or folder somewhere, but which/where/why? Can't get printers to show up in Print/Fax System Prefs when trying to add.

Again, thanks for any suggestions you may have...

Uninstalling was the only way I could get the HP 4315 to print. It still doesn't scan, but I'm working on that. Uninstall all HP software. Then go back to Applications and delete any HP icons that are still there. Empty trash. Reboot. When I rebooted, the HP software upgraded. I never had to reinstall the software from the HP disk and I can't find anything HP related in Applications, but I can print!

bixmn,

Lets break your devices down into a couple of groups (and given you said through Ethernet, I assume you meant a LaserJet 1300n):

1) The older networked LaserJets (the LaserJet 4100dtn, the LaserJet 4050tn, the LaserJet 1300n).
2) The new networked LaserJet (the Laserjet M2727nf)

First off, the reason you are not seeing any of the older LaserJets (anything in group 1) is that Apple dropped AppleTalk for Snow Leopard. These devices are all older and hence don't advertise their services through Bonjour. What you need to do is make sure that all of these printers have valid IP address that can be routed to from your Mac, and then add the print queues manually under the IP option using "HP Jetdirect - socket" as the Protocol.

If you need any help, I'll be more then happy to answer the questions (although there are numerous threads here dealing with this).

Now for the more interesting question, that of the LaserJet 2727 MFP. That device should have In-OS print drivers, and should show up in the printer list when the Add Printer window is open (under Default). If only the Fax is showing up, then there is probably another issue going on. If you open Safari, click the bookmarks button, and then click on the Bonjour grouping, can you find the Web server on your printer? If not, then I suspect that the LaserJet 2727 is also outside of the local subnet yet somehow the fax driver is finding it. If that is the case, again you can get the IP address for the device and add it using the HP Jetdirect - socket mechanism mentioned above. If not, post back and lets try to trouble shoot some more.

Oh, and a full solution for the LaserJet 2727 including Scan should be available in October.

Just trying to help.

Katie J,

The HP OfficeJet 315 include In-OS Print, Scan, and Fax drivers as well as a full feature utility. The In-OS Scan solution can be found through Preview, Image Capture, the Print & Fax system preference (why do I want to keep calling it a Control Panel), and the Printer browser (the thing that shows up on your dock while printing). A great article on the new In-OS Scan UI can be found [here|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3771].

If the In-OS Scan solution is not meeting your needs, a full solution for the OfficeJet 4315, complete with HP Scan can be found [here|http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=mp- 75101-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&os=219&product=1138342].

Remember, do not use the CD that came with your device. The applications on it, namely HP Scan Pro and HP Device Manager are not compatible with Snow Leopard.

I'm unable to set the 4050 up as an IP printer. I've got the 4-part IP address, which the setup is calling valid and complete, but "Generic Postscript Printer" defaults. The two are not communicating. 4050 config page shows TCP/IP STATUS of "ready". There's no place to enter a subnet mask, or gateway when adding a printer.

The 4100 config page prints with 0.0.0.0 as the IP address. No go.

bixmn,

First off, I am only one person, although I sometimes wish there were more then one of me just to get everything done I need to. I think my wife agrees recently. The Mac team here at HP is small but very dedicated. And occasionally I do talk over problems with one or more of them to try and figure out what is going on.

Glad to hear the LaserJet 2727 problem is solved.

Now onto the others. What I really need is the IP Address and Subnet Mask on your Mac, as well as the IP address from the LaserJet 4050. My guess is they are on different subnets.

As for the 4100, your first step should probably be a cold reset. To do that, the steps are as follows:

1) Turn off the printer.
2) While pressing GO, turn the printer on. Release GO when Cold Reset appears briefly on the display, then Initializing appears. After a few seconds, Restoring Factory Settings appears on the display, followed by Offline . The cold reset is complete.
3) Press GO to return the printer online. Ready appears on the display.

At this point print out the config page and post back the IP address of the 4100 as well.

Just trying to help.

Thanks. With the 4100: tried the Cold Reset. Still listed IP as 0.0.0.0 and Subnet Mask as 0.0.0.0. Then I plugged the ethernet cable from it directly into our router rather than a 10/100 switch. Now IP is 10.1.10.120 and Subnet Mask is 255.0.0.0 My Mac is IP 10.1.10.130 Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 Subnet Mask for other Macs on network is 255.255.255.0 (same gigabit switch?).

The 4050's IP is 172.23.20.105 Subnet Mask 255.255.252.0 It's plugged into the Gigabit Switch.

We're working with a Comcast router, a D-Link Gigabit switch and a D-Link 10/100 switch.

bixmn,

Based on the information you provided, you should be able to print your your Laserjet 4100 by setting up the queue manually under the IP option by selecting "HP Jetdirect - socket" as the protocol and typing in the IP address of 10.1.10.120.

The 4050's IP however may not be routable from the Mac unless your router is setup to work. The Mac and the printer are both in the 10.1.10.x range (perfectly legal as a private IP address to use anything in the 10.x.x.x). The 4050 as one in the 172.23.x.x. range (also perfectly legal as a private IP address). What I would try doing (if a cold reset on the 4050 isn't getting it to grab a new IP address) is set it up with 10.1.10.121 (or some other address in the 10.1.10.x range that you are not using) and setup the print queue again as described above.

Give these a try and report back your progress.

Just trying to help.

I have found advice given on this thread very helpful. I still have a problem though! On my Macbook I have HP Photosmart C6280 connected to BT hub. When connected with USB I can print scan etc (thanks to this thread) I cannot get wireless option (which I need) The printer does not show up under anything with "Bonjour" and I do not see "nearby printers" option. I am probably doing something silly or not doing the blindingly obvious but I am stumped.
In hope, Peter

CACNd,

I assume that when you say it is connected to a BT hub, you have it connected via Ethernet to the BT hub, and your computer is connected wirelessly. What I don't know is how to configure a BT hub. My guess is what is happening is the Wireless devices are sharing an IP address through some sort of NAT while the printer is either using a different shared IP address or at least is on a different subnet. You need to make sure that both wired and wireless clients are on the same subnet and can see each other. I wish I could provide more direction, but I don't have access to a BT hub to test with (obviously).
