Binary images description not available

Question

Binary images description not available

I scanned some pages from a book on my Epson scanner which converted them to jpg files. I then tried to import those images into iPhoto to clean up the edges but it won't import. Every time the program crashes. I've restarted and repaired permissions. Below are the problem details that are sent to Apple. What stood out in my eye was the phrase, "Binary images description not available".

Could someone tell me why this is happening and what I might be able to do to fix it.

What stood out in my eye was the phrase, "Binary images description not available".

In a normal Crash Report there is an appended list of apps and utilities (the Binaries), which this crash report hasn't managed to capture. I'm not sure that it's especially relevant.

That crash is happening very early in the launch and the Report is incomplete. The app is trying to use areas of unmapped memory and this can be caused by three factors: The Application or the Data (Your Library) and in rare circumstances, the OS.

So lets start by eliminating some possibilities:

Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and launch iPhoto and see if you can create a new blank Library there. If you can't, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

Same problem under both the administrators account and the new one.

I should tell you that when I import just ONE photo that it's okay most of the time but will still crash sometimes. That makes the whole project a labor if I have to continue like this, but it's doable.

Let's try re-install iPhoto. Don't forget to back up your Library first.

To re-install iPhoto

1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)

2. Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name

3. Re-install.

If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.

If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only...’
