Safari ridiculously SLOW in Snow Leopard

I was very happy with Safari 4 performance in my 2008 iMac. But since I upgraded to Snow Leopard (10.6.1) the browser is simply too slow to be usable. Really, really slow. You can see every single element of a website loading (like the background drawing from top to botton, things like that), while before it just appeared instantly.

I have an old macbook (2.0ghz, Core Duo - not core 2 duo, 512MB RAM) running Leopard and I did some side by side tests. My iMac has a 2.66 Core 2 Duo Processor with 4GB ⚠ of ram. Both machines side by side, on the same Wifi network.

Even tough I pressed enter simultaneously in both machines, the iMac is now taking 3 to 5 SECONDS more to load a page than the old macbook ! I did tests in MANY websites, like digg.com, new york times, college humor, and so on.

What gives ? Why is Safari so slow in snow leopard ?

I can't see versions in your screenshot. You can get the version of each plugin by going to the help menu and select installed plugins. The window that comes up will tell you each of the plugins and their versions. Make sure Flash is version 10. Flip4Mac should be Version 2.3.0.14

You can get the newest version of Flip4mac here.

Flash is here:
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

If this doesn't improve things I would try removing some of the plugins and see if this effects Safari:

1. Close Safari
2. Make a new folder on your desktop and then drag all plugins into it except:
• Flash Plugin
• Java Plugin Cocoa (Alias)
• Quartz Composer
• Quicktime plugin

Open Safari. Does it run better? If it does add your other plugins one or two at a time by closing Safari, adding the plugin and opening Safari.

You pick up these plugin when you go to a site that asks you to download something and you say "yes." The plugin is installed. For example, sites that use Real Player or Silverlight or Moveworks will pop up a question: " Do you want to install the new player." If you click "yes" it will install the plugin.

if you don't think you did any of these things try opening up Software Update and see if Java or even the OS itself needs to be updated:

1. Go to the Apple menu at the very top left of the screen.

2. Select "software update." Software update will run and let you know if anything needs updating. If it finds something that needs updating click on "install" and follow the directions from there. you may have to enter your password.

One of the new aspects of Safari is its ability to not crash when Java is not behaving. The page may continue to load but Safari won't crash.

Does Safari behave this way on all pages or just certain ones?

Kurt

I dunno. I still have to see a single page crashing leaving Safari still alive. But I already had few (not many) Safari crashes opening certain pages (I believe flash was involved). Well, not a big deal. One just restarts it. At least THAT is fast. Did anyone experience a single page crash?

Solution: Removing (aka deleting and then emptying the trash) the Shockwave plugin in /Library/Internet Plugins worked for me also, Safari is now zipping along.

Not sure if what I did is right. I removed from the terminal all *.xpt files in "/Library/Internet Plugins and $HOME /Library/Internet Plugins". they were the oldest (one back to 2006. A ShockWave plugin indeed). Also they were just files not directories like the others that I kept. I restarted Safari a couple of times and it seemed back to normal. Now I just clicked to write this reply and it took, again, 10+ sec to load the page, with the bandwidth monitor showing 0 KB/s for few sec.

Actually before to remove the plugins one may simply disable them first in Safari Preference/Security and see if there is any improvement. I don't know if this has been posted before, but it has some more hints: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10328447-263.html?tag=mfiredir

Hi, in trying to get my Safari to run faster I deleted some plugins. In the process, somehow I did something that puts my printer "offline". I bought a new printer, installed it and I still have the same problem. When I check my hardware listing in the OS (I have not installed SL) and it says "staus-processing" The drivers are there, the Mac identifies the printer but it still goes "offline" when I try to print. The new printer is an EPSON CX4400 Series (1). One plugin that I deleted was "VerifiedDownLoadPlugin.plugin and also the AdobePDFViewer.plugin. I repaired permissions. THere were some that said they were not repaired because they were "modified"

I also installed the new iTunes with the old OS and I now can't access iTunes Store it says there is no connection when there is. Apple will suffer for this....I can't buy anything 🙂

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
