Safari ridiculously SLOW in Snow Leopard

I was very happy with Safari 4 performance in my 2008 iMac. But since I upgraded to Snow Leopard (10.6.1) the browser is simply too slow to be usable. Really, really slow. You can see every single element of a website loading (like the background drawing from top to botton, things like that), while before it just appeared instantly.

I have an old macbook (2.0ghz, Core Duo - not core 2 duo, 512MB RAM) running Leopard and I did some side by side tests. My iMac has a 2.66 Core 2 Duo Processor with 4GB ⚠ of ram. Both machines side by side, on the same Wifi network.

Even tough I pressed enter simultaneously in both machines, the iMac is now taking 3 to 5 SECONDS more to load a page than the old macbook ! I did tests in MANY websites, like digg.com, new york times, college humor, and so on.

What gives ? Why is Safari so slow in snow leopard ?

Well Barry... Felipe is not wrong... I think that you (Barry) didnt see when safari in snow leopard goes slow. It's realy slow..

I have the same problem, and no solution yet. it's happens after hour that i turn on my book. and it's fix if I simple re-start my system.

I repaired disk permissions as suggested - almost every faulty permission listed was associated with Safari. I also removed the Shockwave PPC plugin as suggested. Not sure which helped, but Safari went from totally aggravating to running perfectly.

I've been having the same problem with Safari 4.0.3 and it got unbearably worse when I upgraded to Snow Leopard today. But I followed the advice above and now it's running really quickly for now.

What do you mean I have some 32 bit application that is messing with Safari? How would I discover that?

Is it ok to keep Safari running it in 32 bit mode?

Finally updated Leopard with Snow Leopard after having the disc for months. Everything works fine except for a very noticeable speed drop in pages loading in Safari esp. with "animated" pages. Did all the suggestions in this forum including disabling plug-ins and permission repairs.
Now I was going to say that nothing changed but I did notice after much web viewing that everything was super fast EXCEPT for the Apple intro page with iPad which still takes at least 10 seconds to load. What I did notice is that disabling Java scripting the iPad came up quickly but no "animations'. Am I picky or should I research more? Can't seem to find another website that's as slow as the ipad site. Nike.com even was super fast.

Update to my Safari issue. It seems to be any page that are flash/javascript orientated. Everything else work great. IT guy at my work recommended doing repair permission from the SL disc. I initially did repair with two users only.
Hope it'll work.

Hi everybody

I am been battling with Safari 4 been very slow for a wild till i decided to upgrade to SL to see if was going a bit faster, the worst page to open was AppleInsider or 9to5mac it would take ages, till the other day I disable the JavaScript (Safari>Preferences>Security) and Safari start to fly, also I changed my DNS as was suggested in other post in here.
