I'm trying to use migration assistant to transfer files from my girlfriend's old iBook G4 to her new Macbook Pro. The old computer running 10.3.9 has Setup Assistant. The old iBook G4 keeps asking for the old computer to connect to it. It doesn't know, it IS the old computer. Am I doing something wrong? I'm using an ethernet cable to connect the two Macs.
When I spoke with the Apple guy in the store he said I could use an ethernet cable, it would just take longer. Is this the case?
Macbook Pro,
Mac OS X (10.6.1),
Time Capsule, Airport Express
I'm working on a similar situation, going from a G4 Powerbook running 10.3.9 to a new MB on 10.6.1. Both are firewire 400, so no 400/800 conversion required, but the MB doesn't recognize that the PB is in Target Disk Mode. I've repaired all permissions, restarted both computers a couple times now, done the compulsory wiggle of the cable to see if that helps, and I'm getting nothing. The PB is sitting happy as a clam in TDM and the MB doesn't seem to register its existance. Any ideas? All I really want is the music, pictures, some data, and some application prefs. And there's no way I'm going to spend the time burning all that to disk unless I really truly have no other option.

Well, this did it! It was a piece of cake. I connected the wire from the old Mac to the new one, then started Migration assistant, and rebooted the old Mac while holding the T button. It took maybe an hour to transfer all files I requested, and it was a piece of cake.
The only part that I had an issue with, was the fact that the files I transferred were protected. I had to log in, under the old name and password, and transfer files by using the public drop box. Other than that, the transfer was seamless. All in all a fabulous feature!
