Iphone Streaming Audio - How do I do it? I'm weeping with frustration

Hi everyone! After much of deliberation, I bought the iphone 3gs today. It's my first iphone, and I was very exited to finally own one. But you cannot imagine my disappointment when I discovered the phone failing to perform the task I bought it for.

I need to listen to certain university lectures, which are audio only - here's one:

The phone can' do it - apparently there's some kind of server problem. The audio cannot be directly downloaded on my computer and saved, for they stream in real time; each lecture is between 1 and 2 hours long. I desperately need someone's help - perhaps there's an app I could purchase to help me. I would love to keep this phone, but if it cant perform this function, I will be returning it tomorrow, and jumping off the iphone boat after having being on it for only a few frustrated moments.

Many thanks in advance for any efforts to assist me!

(I an in the UK - I don't know if that is significant to the situation)

Wonderful advice Philly - really amazing.

I've tried constructive advice. Your statements in earlier posts include:

"I really regret buying this phone. It can't even stream audio. I've wasted £180."

"WHY DID I BUY THIS PHONE?????
IT DOESN'T EVEN SURF THE WEB PROPERLY!!!!
I'VE WASTED NEARLY £200!!!!!"

"Yeah - thanks a lot for those nasty words Paulcb. They're just what I need right now. Really, thanks"

"Is the iphone really so rubbish that it can't handle simple streaming audio????!!!!!?????"

and then you insult me for suggesting you return it (while you still can) and get your ill-spent £200.

Why would anyone be motivated to take your distasteful rants seriously any longer?

Phil

Wow Philly, what's your problem - the guy wants a solution, not to return his phone

I spent about 30 min on Monday looking for such apps and suggested one (if you look at the top of this thread). So did Paul. It could be there is no solution and if this capability to stream audio lectures in mov format is so blessed important to him his best course may be to return the iPhone and buy something else.

Anyway, my friend, I'm done with this topic.

In fact I think it is time to take a vacation from this forum.

Hi,
I spent some time yesterday - hunting around the web for an app that works - to no avail. During my searches, I found the identical issue occured when they released a new version of Safari for the Mac/PC back in 2007. I tried accessing the link using Safari and it works OK. Sifting through the various threads, it looks like it may have something to do with the port that the Uni is using, or it's just that it's a .mov rather than a .m4v - I am going to try and create a streaming .mov and .m4v and see if I can get it to work. I'll try to let you know whether it's just the port or whether it's the phone's inability to accept streaming data in this way !!

Thanks dbakker - but it won't work with my operating system. I refuse to upgrade my computers operating system, just so my phone can access the internet. It doesn't look like it would help anyway, but thank you for your advice.

As with Phil, I'm done with this stupid thread myself. FYI, my IP does surf the web (taking into account the slimmed down Safari version.) My IP also streams audio fine from websites that operate within an app such as Sirius, iheartradio and many more. And it streams other apps as well (maps, etc), again within an app.

Just because it won't work on some obscure professor's rambling presentation that 99.9999% of the IP users could care less about is just too bad. Perhaps you should get ahold of the professor and tell him to get an app out that you can use, listen to him on a computer, or maybe even go hear him live.

OK, I have not even bothered to try.

The site you are trying to access, uses RTSP (Real time streaming Protocol) - This is not and is not likely to ever be available on the iPhone. See the link below for more information.

http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/07/08/applelaunches_http_live_streaming_standard_in_iphone_30.html

The fact that Apple have developed a new streaming standard to get round the issues they have with RTSP most certainly means that they wont get round to fixing it for the iPhone. I have been unsuccessful in finding any applications (including Jailbreak ones) that will solve your problem.

If it was sold to you as an option that was available, then you can return it as "not fit for purpose"

As has been said, there are many capture programs that will capture the audio stream as you play it to a file , which can be downloaded to the phone in a format that it can read. Other than this option , there is no alternative that will give you what you require.

You contact Apple if you wish using the following link, but I would expect that the answer you get back won't be the one you are looking for
