iTunes Media Folder Location Reset

About a year or so ago I moved all of my music to an external hard drive to free up space on my Mac. In doing so, every time I restart my computer or I quit and restart iTunes, my folder location resets to the default location on my Mac HD. I have to check it almost every time I add music to my iTunes lobrary so that I"m sure to have the music saved ot my external hard rive. Any reason why this is happening?

Here's an update to my post above. This morning I used iTunes and closed it properly when done. A few minutes later I rememebered one other CD I wanted to import. Opened it back up and it had reverted to default settings. Had to turn back on Home Sharing and reimport all my music. Then of course when I connect my devices, it know noting about them, so have to go through that process again.

As mentioned above I've only used iTunes for about 4 months. I've tried to ignore the iTunes haters and evalute the product from my own experiences. Other then this resetting to default issue I have nothing bad to say. However this is becoming very frustrating, as it takes a couple hours to get eveything back in order.

I'm not ready to join the iTunes hater club at this point but I am now listening ... bummer too as I really want to like this product.

Okay!

I'm not using AVG. 😉

It does not matter where I tell iTunes that I want my "iTunes Media Folder Location" to be it ALWAYS resets it to "C:\Users\Name\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media" I want it to be "E:\Our Media\Our Music".

I have tried to copy the iTunes files from the "C" location to the "E" location, the I deleted the "C:\Users\Name\Music\iTunes" directory and magically when iTunes starts it recreates the directory.

iTunes flat out refuses to use the "E" location, which is not a network drive, it is a physical drive in the computer, it is not a mapped drive, etc....

Anyone have any suggestions besides dropping iTunes off a very tall virtual cliff. If I can not get this resolved I will be forced to find another program, iTunes is getting buggier with every release on Windows. 😟

Please help. ::begs::

Oh, another note. When I do get iTunes to "remember" to use the "E" location, it still stores ALL of it's information in the "C" location, even though the media is on "E", that is when it does not reset itself.

Found a Solution: Right Click on the "My Music" Library, and "move" it to the "E" location. This seems to keep iTunes happy, for now.

Here's how I made mine work.

I just had to reformat my hard drive. I have a C drive and an I drive. I lost everything on my C drive but my I drive was fine so I decided when I load my iTunes I would set it to go to my I drive.

I also installed iTunes to my I drive but in hindsight that was a little silly as long as I still had my media files I don't care where the program is installed.

I did as everyone else does, go to preferences and change the default location to my I drive. When I restart iTunes the location goes back to my c drive. It annoyed me.

How I got mine to not do this:

1. Do not delete the location that iTunes is trying to write to. (in my case the c drive) Keep it there.

2: Make sure there is an iTunes folder in your desired location as well as the location that iTunes is trying to write.

3: Now, this next part is what fixed it for me. I don't know why I just had a hunch. I opened up the iTunes folder in the location I want my files to go to (I drive). That last sentence is important. My iTunes was open at this time however it may work if you don't. I double clicked on the iTunes library file (iTunes database file), saw iTunes kind of flash. I did the same for the iTunes Library Genius and iTunes Library Extras. I checked preferences, saw that my location has stayed the same. I closed iTunes and opened it back and up and didn't change. I stayed where I wanted it. Solved!

Incidentally, when I deleted the iTunes folder from the locations that iTunes was trying to put the music (c Drive) and restarted iTunes, the folder was put back onto my C drive and the setting in preferences reverted back to the c drive. As long as I keep the c drive folder, click on the Database files in the desired location, the setting will stick. Restarting iTunes for me no longer resets this setting. Hope this helps.

OK, cbello727, five years after your post and it's still a brilliant solution. I wanted to throw iTunes out the window, but that would have included the computer, so I tried your suggestions. I wish Apple had people like you working on their Help files. My music is back where it should be, thanks to your steps. I don't think I followed all of them, but the gist was there, and I prevailed, thanks to you. Cheers!
