Can't connect to Snow Leopard from Windows PC via VnC or TeamViewer

Just installed Snow Leopard and love it. However, I'm noticing that

1) I can't connect to it via any VNC client. (My router has both port 4500 and 5900 open; I have Screen Sharing turned on in System Preferences; my firewall in System Preferences is off; and I have Screen Sharing set up to let anyone connect to me remotely with a password (not just Administrators))

2) I set TeamViewer up on the machine as a last resort but TeamViewer is really REALLY bad at staying online consistently and frequently crashes for no reason and then doesn't restart. I have it set up to start up when I login with a set password but for some reason it's not working with that password (but it attempts to connect and fails on the password).

I just want a reliable, quick way to continuously stay connected to my Mac at home from my windows desktop at work. How do I do this?

MacPro, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

Does the screen sharing work between machines on the local network at home? Just ruling out the router and external network.

A VNC server that I have had success with is Vine server, you will need to check it is compatible with SL.

Don't forget to switch off the Mac Screen Sharing and the TeamViewer or you may get problems on port 5900

Well, as I said; the firewall in System Preferences is OFF; therefore no ports should be blocked; theoretically. Also, does anyone else have issues with TeamViewer being so unstable? Seriously, it runs for barely an hour and then almost always crashes or causes weird things to happen to Finder and then I end up having to disconnect (and then subsequently can't reconnect). At this point; I'm considering trying to find another connection option.

LittleSnitch has been causing other people problems. Do you have any utilities such as LittleSnitch or some other firewall assistance utility?

LogMeIn.com is another possibility for remote screen sharing.

VNC should only need port 5900.

Are you using Windows as the client platform? What VNC client are you using. TightVNC has been reported to be a good Windows VNC client, but I do not have any personal experience. I have also heard about UltraVNC and RealVNC.

I'm assuming you set System Preferences -> Sharing -> Screen Sharing -> Computer Settings -> VNC viewer may control screen with password: xxxxxxx

Or did you also mess with Sharing -> Remote Management?? If you have both configured, you could be working at cross purposes.

If you cannot get connected to the built-in Mac OS X VNC server, you could give the Vine Server a try (at least as an experiment). If you do try Vine Server, disable the build-in Mac OS X VNC server -OR- use port 5901 so that you do not have 2 servers trying to use the same port. Using 5901 will mean opening a different port on your router. Vine Server (aka OSXvnc)

I was having this same issue using VNC Viewer from RealVNC, but I have it working now. It appears to be related to the number of colors you are trying to display.

The solution is as follows:

1. Launch VNC Viewer.
2. Click the Options button in the Connection Details dialog box.
3. On the *Colour & Encoding* tab, select the radio button for *Full (all available colours)* under the *Colour level* heading.
4. Click the Load/Save tab and then click the Save button to make this color setting your default.
5. Click OK to close the *VNC Viewer Options* dialog box.
6. Connect to the Snow Leopard machine.

Hope it works for you as it did for me.
