Apple TV not responding-Port 3689

I have been syncing with my Apple TV for almost 2 years. My only recent changes have been the upgrade to Snow Leopard. When I tried to sync today and clicked on the more info I received the following response:

Once you have synced or paired the Apple TV to your Mac to establish a syncing or streaming connection, iTunes may say "The Apple TV [Name] is not responding. Check that any firewall software running on this computer has been set to allow communication on port 3689."

Firewall is not enabled presently. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I thought I'd say that after several hours with Apple support [excellent attempts to help tho] nothing is better: Before this the ATV synced with iTunes just fine = my iPhone still does just fine.

I have an Apple TV which was running 2.0 and upgraded to 3+ and
iTunes 9.0.2, Snow Leopard, now. Before I had ATV 2 and iTunes9+ and
10.5.8...no problems at all using the ATV. Upgraded ATV to 3+ and computer to SnowLeopard...although the ATV shows up in the Devices area of the iTunes, it can't connect to the library. It shows up in Devices and needs to be set up and I do that, entering the 5 numbers, and the only two tabs are Summary and Photos, nothing else.

Network is fine. Computer with iTunes is connected to Network by ethernet and the ATV is connected by Wireless. The wireless network the ATV sees is the right one and the signal strength is full and the IP and other numbers are correct. ATV can see theatrical trailers and play music from internet. I did a wipe of the ATV and reinstalled factory defaults and set it up again, upgraded the software to 3 and tried again. It is seen in the iTunes but when I hit Sync it says the ATV is not
responding "check that any firewall software running on this comptuer
has been set to allow communication on port 3689."

I did not have the software firewall running. I did have VirusBarrier X5 running [no problems using it and having ATV working before this] but did turn it off for a bit while I am troubleshooting. Finally we totally deleted it and although I could finally again see the ATV in the iTunes Devices area, it didn't sync at all.

I have aNetgear GS108 switch [not router, no ports to set up] and
just talked to the cable company which says its modem/router doesn't
have such selections. It's a 'bare' broadband modem.

So, there's no place to set port 3689 that I can find. I did do a test by going into Airport Utility and Advanced and using the QuickTime Server Port openings to put 3689 in, but that didn't change a thing. And there's no iTunes Sharing checkbox anywhere that I can find. None of the
pieces of hardware has any problelm, network is fine. Internet is
fine. But ATV won't sync with iTunes.

I've been experiencing the same port 3689 issues with my Apple TV and now my iPod Classic 160gig.
When the new Apple TV ver. 3 was installed, it did correct the problem for a few weeks and then two days ago it all started again. I went to my Security settings and made sure everything was set to allow (I can't see any individual Port settings, though.) It still will not sync. It also removed all my photos from Apple TV. I hope they resolve this issue soon.

I just started getting the Port 3689 error. I was running OSX 10.6.2 and iTunes 9.0.2 with no issues connecting to ATV 2.? Just upgraded to 3.0 and now I can see the device in iTunes but cannot sync (Port 3689 error). I do not run any firewalls either Apple or 3rd party. Been searching forums all day and have not found anything useful.

Found a suggestion at another forum, tried it and it fixed my problem. (I also restarted my iMac and ATV after making change to file sharing) ATV is now syncing.

I think I may have found the solution. I turned off my file sharing a few weeks ago because I was using a hotel network. When I turned it back on, it works again.

Try this:

-System Preferences
-Sharing
-I clicked only "File Sharing"

It's clear Apple isn't listening to this problem or they would FIX IT. Everything worked at one point and now it doesn't. I updated to OS (10.6) and iTunes 9.0.2. Sooo, what's the deal Apple. Your online guidance is limited to OS 10.5 and below and computers with Zone, Norton, McAfee installed with discussions on opening TCP ports (which as far as I know 10.6 no longer gives access to).

HOW ABOUT SOME HELP for those of us who updated to 10.6 please. Clear cut instructions on how to resolve this problem.

Like others I have tried enabling all sharing options and allowing all incoming connections on iTunes, but I just get the same results.

The ONE REASON I'm on an Apple is because I like the ease of operation. I don't want to muck about with problems like this, I just want it to be EASY. I'm a User not a tinkerer. Please respond to the many customers that have sought help from each other in lieu of a response from Apple. It appears we need YOUR help as many of us haven't "lucked onto" the right combination of settings, instead we just use the shotgun approach trying to flip this, change that, but apparently many of us are lost.

I need help with this issue, please help.

Thanks/DMK

I suggest you do what I did = go to the support area and set up a call back [I prefer to do that so I don't have to wait online forever]. I put down the time to call and also the issue and make it quite clear what it is about. I did talk to a guy last week and he was helpful and receptive = but no answer. I don't have time to fiddle with it further for a while but i'll be calling back. I did tell him to come to the support area to check this out.

So, saying please help here doesn't do much -- sending a feedback message or calling support and talking to someone might at least squeak the wheel more. Good luck.

Victoria, appreciate the thoughtful advice, however I am overseas and Apple's Phone Back Support only works stateside. I look forward to the day I will be back home and enjoying the perks of living in the USA.

I will add an interesting twist to the suspicions that are posted here.
My AppleTV problems are related to my connections with my MacBook Pro.

However, I transferred my iTunes library to my MacMini (running 10.5.?) over the weekend and everything is fine on the MacMini/AppleTV Syncing and sharing.
After that test, I reset the computer connections on the AppleTV and went back to syncing/sharing going with the MBP (10.6), I still get the same issues – port 3689 is blocks, yada, yada, yada.

So to me the issue has to be with 10.6 because the Time Machine settings weren’t changed for my test and the MacMini works with Apple TV – no hocus pocus with enabling ports or fairy dusty diversion related to security software.

Soooo, again, I ask the Apple Moderators who are hopefully reading this thread to please pass this on to Apple as a continuing common problem associated with upgrades to 10.6.

Please find a solution to this problem and post it on the Support site. Thanks.

And thanks for your update! When I did the phone support a week ago I did tell the guy [George] about this thread and others on the Discussions pages and he should check it out. I have been too busy to do anything else, am still without syncing and frankly, no time til early part of January to prod a bit more [since I do have a case number!] But if and when I do, I'll remind him or whoever I speak with about this discussion. And maybe do that sooner than I think [your trial seeming to have isolated the issue a bit].

Just in response to Yeziam, I am still running 10.5.8 and continue to have the 3689 problem.
I have checked port 3689 on my Mac (Network Utility lets you scan for open ports) and it tells me 3689 is open for daap (Digital Audio Access Protocol) which is what iTunes uses for sharing. I have no firewall on my local network. As for other people, the ATV has no problem connecting to the network and the internet. I still have no idea what is causing the sync problem.....
Give us a break Apple...

Recently I hardwired my 27" iMac to the my modem instead of connecting with an Airport Time Machine Base Station. Previously my Apple TV was also hard wired to the modem/router all using typical CAT (ethernet) cable.

Now I've been getting a strange message saying: "The Apple TV is not responding. Check that any firewall software running on this computer has been set to allow communication on port 3689."

When I press the "more info..." button, it goes to a useless page that has nothing of value to offer called "Configuring firewalls on a Mac for use with Apple TV". This information is not relevant and out of date.

I have no firewall running on the computer at all. My Netgear DG834v3 modem and router is linked via CAT cable to both my 27" new iMac and my Apple TV. Prior to this problem my iMac was linked to the modem via the Time Machine AEB and an Airport wireless link. I can't replicate previous conditions. I have gone into the modem and opened port 3689, with no luck whatsoever...

Today I have done some isolating work and ATV will not sync with iTunes unless it is directly connected with a CAT (Ethernet) cable.

I even purchased a new modem (moved from a Netgear to a Belkin - 2 different types of garbage) and even though I get better internet speeds with the Belkin (marginally), still no sync joy via the network either wirelessly or cabled. And there are no LAN firewalls. I thought Apple Gear was supposed to make PC's look stupid! Are the ads misrepresenting the truth?

This is totally strange, because, even when I set up the rig as it was before the hardwiring, it won't work. Keep in mind it will work when there is there is a direct hardwired connection between the ATV and the computer, however that means no internet.... I am stumped.

Hi.

I seem to be suffering the same issue as you, except I am on Windows. I have an ATV hardwired into a home router (BT HomeHub), and a PC hardwired into the same home router. As soon as I connect from the ATV (and type in the five digit code) it appears in iTunes, but a few seconds later gives me the "Check that any firewall software running on this computer has been set to allow communication on port 3689.". I use Kaspersky, but switching it off makes no difference, and am now so frustrated with it. I've tried all the things in this forum (upgrade s/w on both devices, firewall configs etc) - any more ideas?

Dec 30, 2009 7:18 AM in response to Yeziam

I've been dealing with this issue for a while too and have found it to be quite frustrating. I have my ATV connected with an ethernet. I recently tried a couple of things that seemed to have worked so far. Logging into my router, I then went to Edit Application Settings and changed it to Allow All Applications (DMZplus mode) which opens all ports. This worked but I wanted to see if I could just open the one port so I then changed the setting by Allowing Individual Applications and added iTunes wit Port 3689. Seems to be working OK.

Hi Everyone... I just spent 3 hours on the telephone with Apple Australia who helped solve MY version of this pesky problem, which involved Waves (Audio) APA software. The APA is a dinosaur which used the Ethernet port to communicate to the Waves Plugins in Logic and Protools. t is now out of date and doesn't work with the new Waves or Digidesign software, but if you have accidentally left its software hidden in the Apple System and Library folders, it can cause all sorts of havoc you can't imagine, like preventing iTunes connecting with an Apple TV via port 3689, etc.... For anyone experiencing Port 3689 problems, the issue may not be your network, but 3rd part software interfering with the Ethernet port. Thank you Steven from Apple support for assisting me to resolve my issue.
