Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Is Anyone Having Problems with the newer version of Firefox?

I still have my older Mac OsXv10.4 Tiger software. I wasn't exactly happy with Safari browser as it would block many sites and were considered incompatible so I downloaded the free Firefox browser (the 2.0 version) of which I STILL have. I'm aware that there is a much newer version and would like to download that, but I've heard a lot of people saying they have been having severe problems with it, but then they have PCs and not Macs.
So my question is for you Mac users that use Firefox, have you had major problems with the newer version? I'm real hesitant to download if I'm going to have the same problem PC users are having...like constantly crashing. Also would my old Tiger software be compatible? I don't want to upgrade to Leopard.

I would not recommend using Firefox without NoScript. Even if you enable all scripts, which you should never do anyway, NoScript will protect you more than anything else you can do with a browser. Because of this, I would not recommend using a browser other FF (unless Apple were shrewd enough to pay the NoScript guy to do the same for Safari).

I have noticed that some web sites take forever to load, because their source consists about 90% of Javascript. That's another reason I disable it.

You can also set dom.max script_runtime to a lower number to get it to time out faster.

As a webmaster who uses JavaScript for reasonable non-commercial purposes I am concerned about any advice to block script by default.

I agree that in recent years advertising has adversely affected browsing speed but I prefer solutions which do not attempt to block script by default. I find that a 'hosts' file, with a long list of sites I wish to block, is very satisfactory.

I previously said:

I would use Safari but find its lack of dynamically updated visited links too inefficient for my purposes. As far as I am aware it is the only browser with this serious defect. I have reported this twice and have given up!

However, I see that the problem no longer exists in Safari 4.0.4. I am not sure when it was corrected but I withdraw my remark.

Try disabling your add-ons, if that doesn't work, I think you should get Applejack...

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596

After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...

applejack AUTO

Then let it do all 5 of it's things.

At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.

The 5 things it does are...

Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.

I downloaded, then ran the installation program, which said it was installed, yet I don't see the app anywhere on my computer. Where does it put the program?

Thanks BDAqua, I often wonder how we're supposed to know a lot of the things we need to, like this. I even tried installing it a second time, since I didn't see it anywhere, & of course, got all the way to the end, & then it said "an error occurred", or something like that. It's sometimes very frustrating opening a zip file or something like that, then what was inside ends up somewhere, & I must hunt all over my hard drive looking for it....

Anyway, thanks for clearing this up....

Now that seems a different problem for perhaps on new Topic from you!?

Indeed, that drives me Crazy too... oh wait, I was there to start with... it must drive me Sane then... but I do know what you mean... xyz.zip 2009311317 unfolds to someapp.app 20070415 & no normal things can find it since you have no idea what it is or when it was really made... my cure for those is to move the .zip or such to it's own folder, unzip it & there it is in the same folder! 😉

Anyway, thanks for clearing this up....

Good deal, do you have any advice as to how I could make the following clearer to everyone?

As has been mentioned you should not need to find it but you can confirm that AppleJack exists by pasting the following into the Terminal followed by a return:

sudo ls /var/root/Library/Scripts

After you have replied with a satisfactory password it will list the directory's contents.

Further information is available from the ReadMe packaged with the installer (I put my ReadMe in Utilities), the Applejack Manual installed on your computer or the online Manual at: http://applejack.sourceforge.net/man.html
