Secure link to iTunes store failed

"iTunes could not connect to the iTunes store. Make sure your network connection is active and try again."

Since iTunes 9.0.1, this is all I've been getting. I've downloaded & reinstalled it several times - no luck.

Under help>diagnostics>Network Connectivity Tests, all are verified with one exception: "Secure link to iTunes store failed."

Under help, there are two possible faults listed. I need to clear my DNS Cache by restarting the machine - i've done that 30 or so times since this problem began.

The second possibility: your router is screwed. Hardly likely! I've been using that router successfuly (with & without iTunes) for months.

Some coincidence: i was using iTunes store quite happily as 9.0.1 was being downloaded. Within half an hour - after 9.0.1 was installed - i was locked out. And it's been like that ever since.

Why?

Is there a solution?

I've been searching all day trying to find a solution to the 9812 error I keep getting. After trying everything I was told, I finally checked out allisone417's recommendation. It worked! First try! Thanks for posting the link here, allisone417! Thanks for your blog, Kas, and thanks Mike for the original solution!!

I have been dealing "or not dealing" with this issue for months now. The issue is apparently with how ITunes is accessing there store server. My network uses a transparent proxy "Squid" and packet filtering "Dansguardian". This was working fine until Apple upgraded iTunes several versions ago. Now the only way I get access is to bypass the network proxy (I am the network admin so I can do this).

If anyone knows how to fix this please post!
