why can't the original iphone use mms?

i don't fully understand this. why can't the original iphone use mms again? i have an iphone and a 3gs, but something i noticed was that when only connected to edge (i turned 3g and wifi off) i could still send AND receive mms. why didn't they allow this in the original iphone if it'll work on the 3g(s)?

This isn't just about Apple. Every manufacturer leaves out things on purpose to get you to buy the latest model, it's how they survive.

P.S. I didn't mean to reply to this so many days later. It was open in my browser from last week and I never actually hit the post button, just typed it out.
