which os came with my macbook? A118

Hello all,
Can you folks please advice on how I can figure out which OS came with my machine? My model number is: A1181 and it was bought in Jan 2007.

I am in the process of replacing my macbook's hard disk (Old one corrupt). Have lost the CD which came with the macbook so trying to find out which CD (OS version) came with the macbook so I can buy the right cd from a store.

Macbook, Other OS

Hi LisaLondon: There are several versions of the A1181 Model. But I suspect yours is the 2,1 version. If so you will need the same DVD that shipped with the MacBook, or a retail copy (Black Disc) of the Operating System, that is at least as high as the original installed version. In your case it most likely shipped with Tiger, 10.4.8.

Hope this helps

It does not matter which one came with your macbook. You can use any disc to restore it.

Hi Nyrol,

I'm afraid that's incorrect. The System Restore Discs that come with newer Macs will only work with a specific machine configuration code. Now, Disc Two (applications) will work across multiple machines in a specific "generation" but again, it won't work with them all. A "Retail" copy of Leopard, Snow Leopard, etc. will however work with any machine that meets the hardware system requirements.

Apple use to allow the System Restore Disc to work across multiple machines, but it's been quite a long time since that was the case (I'd say going on 4+ years now). Certainly in the case of this MacBook, that would not qualify.

Hi Lisa,

A computer purchased in January 2007 would have come with OS X 10.4 "Tiger" on it, as Leopard was not introduced until October of 2007.

If you buy a "retail" copy of Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard, you'll lose out on iLife '06. Leopard and Snow Leopard come in a "box set" bundle that include iLife and iWork so if you go the route of buying a retail version of the OS, I'd recommend the box set.

Also, AppleCare (if you call them) can sell you the replacement discs that would have originally come with your computer when you purchased it. This will give you the OS and iLife for a whole lot less than the cost of buying a retail box set.

Your computer would appear to be this model:

http://support.apple.com/kb/SP23 (MacBook, Late 2006)

Your computer most likely came with 10.4.8 preinstalled (released 09/29/06), at worst it was 10.4.7 (released 08/07/06). It would haven't come with 10.4.9 preinstalled (released 03/17/07).
