Matshita DVD-r UJ-846

Installed Snow Leopard last week.
Created a wedding movie using iDVD, went to burn it and the dvd keeps ejecting.
Tried burning a cd from iTunes, cd doesn't burn and ejects.
Tried all the corrections in bulletin #302925
Still reads DVDs and CDs, but no burny.

Sent a description of the problem to Apple Care. Waiting to see what they do.

Same problem here. My iMac is about 4 years old. It is currently running 10.4.11. I've tried and tried and tried to back up my iPhoto library both through iPhoto and Finder however it will just spit whatever DVD out that is in there. Very frustrating!

Discovered the problem when I was trying to create a project in iDVD and could not select the Dual Layer DVD type in the Project Info menu. What is interesting, is that yesterday when that wasn't working, the DVD-Write specs in System Profiler were DIFFERENT.

I believe it said ... DVD-Write: -R, -RW

Figures this happened just outside my warranty.

Also, I am on Leopard, not Snow Leopard. I could burn dual-layer discs in Toast, even when I couldn't select dual layer in iDVD.

Now, some burns work fine, and others throw errors. Today I have the option of selecting Dual-Layer in iDVD as well.

Same problem just started happening here...

First it believed a DVD-R (with content on it) was blank...
... then started skipping over perfectly fine DVD content saying it was "broken"...
... then skipped through a DVD at odd bits, only working again when I tilted the MacBook again...
... and now it won't read DVD's at all... strange whizzing sounds etc.

Cant mount any type of disc in drive it just spits them out over and over
same problem no answer just a new post started right before Christmas

I've looked in all kind of discussionboards about this problem - I've got the same problem: IMacG5, iSight, MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846 - won't burn anymore - OSX10.4.11

Is it allready clear if this a chronical (hard- or software) problem, or must the drive really be replaced after 4 years???

Same problem here;
iMac 20" bought in october 2006;
superdrive uj-846 firmware FB2U

Now it can not read nor cd nor dvd...

Is there not a solution yet?

I have the same problem, after upgrading to Snow Leopard my drive will no longer write DVD's. It reads disks and dvds fine but when I try to burn it states something like could not calibrate laser or so.
It was working fine before I upgrade to Leopard.

Lets see how long this will take to get a solution from apple

Same problems. Haven't been able to burn or even read DVD's or CD's since 10.5.4. Snow Leopard DVD isn't recognizable by the drive, it just makes weird noises and spits the disc out after a while. Tried opening drive up and cleaning every piece, disconnecting then reconnecting all wires.. Nothing..

Why can't anyone figure out what the problem is? Why can't Apple realize this mistake and be as loyal to their customers as they are unto them, and replace the drives with something that actually works? Normally reinstalling OS X makes it work for about 6 months before it dies again, but every way of remotely installing Snow Leopard or even just Leopard doesn't seem to want to work for me (e.g. Remote Install Mac OS X, Remote Login + DVD or CD Sharing over a private network), and I'm about ready to give up and replace the thing myself.

It sounds like a virus to me...

So I also have the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846, and have spent so much money trying different DVD-R's and did buy one 6 brush lens cleaner. I have had my iMac for 4 years, and this is the first time I've tried to use the burner to back up files (dumb, I know). I appreciate that I'm not the only one having this issue, and as one write noted, it would be nice if Apple would be as loyal to us, as we are to them, and offer a reasonable solution. We are the proud owners of 3 Apples, and I just helped a friend pick out her first Apple, all because (up until this problem) I have been so happy with my Macs. Anyways...am hopeful something will be resolved quickly. IF there isn't a fix, I'm not very savvy when it comes to technology, should I invest in a new DVD burner, or should I take it in for servicing? I did download burner software based on another feedback entry that it may be the burning software. Any advice will be greatly appreciated....

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for assistance from apple regarding this subject. I have the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857 in a 2.0 Duo Macbook and am on my third unit from apple. Now that my warranty has expired they want me to pay an arm and a leg for a fourth unit. Won't burn DVDs at first, then won't burn CDs then won't recognize CDs then won't allow any disc of any kind to remain in the drive, it constantly ejects them. This is a piece of cr@p that apple will not accept responsibility for, after the first drive replacement I started having bluetooth problems. A cheap $39 burner in my wife's junky ACER is still running strong after four years, I am discouraged. The idea that you have to pay to join the insider club to get a decent appointment at the genius bar is a rip off as well, I like the computer, the support system *****. Tim

AGAIN, same problem. MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846 in my MacMini read CDs, but eject ALL DVDs. No burning possible. I've replaced the drive with a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-847 coming from a MacBook (and was working) : same problem. SO, IT IS A SOFTWARE or FIRMWARE problem !
AND YES, THIS IS APPLE'S FAULT from a defective System Update. Had already this problem on Leopard, and now with Snow.
ARE THERE ANY TECHS AT APPLE THAT READ THOSE APPLE DISCUSSIONS. ****, wake up ! It's YOUR fault. Is any one can bring them to Court ? I'm in Costa Rica... so I can't kick ***...
Give us a patch or a new drive....

I used a ruler as a straight edge-there computer top is slightly concave above the media slot where I rest my arm when typing. When I put in a disc, I held my laptop fingers on top, thumbs below and pressing upward under the CD (picture holding a hamburger). I flexed the computer upward until it read the disc (to import it into iTunes) once it read the disc, there was no problem importing. Sounds like a mechanical problem to me, but I can't explain why this started all of a sudden, and it looks like I'm not the only one with this problem.
