This is definetely apple's problem and as someone -very clever said- : you need to give a leg and an arm so apple to help you!

With firstly I installed Snow Leopard, it was working like a charm. After the 10.6.2, it refuses DVD's! • To read any kind of DVD's: I have most chances to win the lotto!
I must insert it so many times and spit it out to my face and wheeeeeeeen and if is in a good day, might read it!
• Write DVD: The day I'll win the lotto, the same day I'll be able to write the DVD.

YOOOOOOOO PEOPLE ON APPLE, WAKE UP. We are so many in here -and if you google you'll find thousands of us- DO SOMETHING!

My Pioneer, internal DVD drive stopped ejecting disks. I replaced it with Apple's Matshita drive.
It burns disks OK with Apple's software but not with Toast. I keep getting "Interface Error -32030, the Connection is Not Stable". Ruins a disk every time!
Roxio seems to think it is a problem with Apple's firmware. According to the System Profiler, the firmware Revision is D809.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The problem exists with 24" ALuminum iMacs too (unless you get the new LED 24", which has a Sony vs. MaSHITa drive.

The plot thickens. The kinds of discs these things reject or accept seems to be arbitrary. [Please see also topic "Problem with audio CDs".] These MatSHITa drives are the culprit. They are POS. here is my horror story:

Resetting the PRAM did not work for me. Last week, the optical drive was waiting a few seconds and then ejecting all media (CDs, DVDs, Installation disks...)

The guy at the local Apple store ran diagnostics and supposedly reset the DVD region. Although I have never had Mac OS ask what region I wanted to use, it is supposed to ask the first time you insert a DVD. If you switch regions (such inserting DVDs formatted for North America-1 and then Europe-2,) you will be asked for the Region each time you insert a different region. For once the region has been changed five times, it is locked in at the last region you selected and the user cannot change it again. There is some Pirateware that will allow you to change it but let the buyer beware.

At any rate, whatever the "Genius" did at the store made my optical drive accept anything but an audio CD.

Hi Folks,

Same problem, my MacBookPro is 3.5 years old, it worked perfectly for 2.5 years then shortly after an update it just spits the disc's out after chunking away for a minute. I am really choked, I didn't spend a ton of money to have this problem. The machine is not under warranty any longer and Apple is only interested in getting more out of me. I think its time for a class action suit? Anyone know how to do it or a lawyer with a broken Mac?

the solutions are (unfortunately) only the following:
a) get a new internal DVD recorder or
b) get an external DVD recorder

The really awful thing about this is that you can't redo bootcamp without the internal drive, which can jeopardize any bootcamp install out there (in case u want to upgrade/change/whatever). You (supposedly) cannot boot from an external DVD drive / windows CD in this case (although I have, see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2490437&tstart=0).

I have had 3 of these drives go south, replaced 2, now none work. We invested in external DVD drives which work grand, except when it comes time to use bootcamp assistant. In one current case, we have lost business because we could not update our bootcamp, as it takes ages to get replacement parts in nepal, and frankly, I am sick of paying for Matshita DVD-r UJ-846 units that won't last the life of the computer.

And people are suing for a few dropped phone calls!

Just wanted to add my voice to the list.
I have a late 2008 unibody MBP with a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868 drive.
At some point (don't know exactly when) it suddenly started rejecting all audio CD's.
The CD's mount fine when using an external drive (NEC).

In support of the above posts:

DVD drive will not burn on a consistent basis, probably 50% or less. When the DVD does burn, it will not burn the second copy. Iphoto will burn albums at about the same rate. I'm not an expert here, but I imagine this is related to a recent update as the drive worked fine until very recently. I have repaired all permissions to no avail. I agree that Apple needs to respond to this issue!

I have to admit an error when I blamed Apple in my last post. I was just frustrated.

Since then, I believe I have figured out my problem burning dvd's and cd's. I realized that all of the burns were feeding off photos in iphoto, so I thought my problem might be with the iphoto database. I had created a large and complex slideshow and assumed so there were lots of possibilities for errors. I was also getting a number of thumbnail rebuilding messages, which was also probably a sign of problems.

In any case, I followed the following procedure to rebuild the iphoto database: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2638. Although my version had check boxes slightly different than the one pictured on the support article, it worked just fine. Most importantly, idvd and iphoto both now burn disks properly.

If you are having trouble with your Matshita drive and it is related to working with iphoto, the above procedure may solve your problems.

Add another one to the list... mine's been working fine since I bought my MBP in early 08. Snow or something else entirely undetectable is now causing mount, eject, and more importantly burn issues.

The question I have... is there anyway to use the bay for another SSD and lose the MatSHITa completely? I seriously doubt it but at this point it seems like a waste.

FYI, I'm not doing anything with iPhoto. I am simply using DiskUtility to create an image and then burn the image to a double layer dvd. So far I've chewed through about 8 blanks thinking it was a preference setting. Nope. That's not it.

Apple? Steve? Hello? I'm out of warranty of course so what are you going to do now?

I think I have the "Snow Leopard DVD problem", and a possible solution.

I just learned of the problem. I received a 2-pack dvd from a conference.
The first DVD reads fine. The second one makes a strange noise pattern
when inserted, and then ejects. I returned it to the conference people, and they
said that everyone with the latest mac os is having trouble with the second disk
(only - they guessed it was the second disk without me telling them).
Windows people are not having the issue.

Regardless, they gave me a replacement set of DVDs to try. I had the same problem
with the second disk.

On a whim, I tried launching Disk Utility first, then inserted the dvd....
it worked.

Maybe this is an accident, but give it a try...

I am using MacBook Pro Duo 17" with a new UJ-875S. I have gone through FOUR brand new UJ-875S's (returned and exchanged at OWC) with the same problem--DVDs read and write fine, but CDs do not. Once in a while I can get it to read a CD, but it is rare. I have read hundreds of posts but have not seen any good definitive answer or explanation of this. These are brand new drives, so cleaning is not the issue, obviously. Have reset permissions, and strangely enough, the drive then worked for ONE day (coincidence?), then right back to the problem of intermittent recognition of CDs. Any advice you can give me that you found while researching your problem?
