iPhone coma mode

If you're experiencing coma mode, don't forget to open a support case with Apple. IF they send an email asking about your support 'experience', be sure to answer and let them know issue was not resolved.
Only way Apple will officially recognize the problem is with support cases.

Hey,

So how do you log a case with Apple anyway? My iPhone has got SO many problems since upgrading to 3.1. I'm almost considering ditching it and buying a Nokia.

Thanks,

Call their support lines, speak to a human and open a support ticket. (You should certainly do this if your phone is within warranty and/or you have Apple Care.) They will undoubtedly have you try a number of things to correct the issue (like doing restores without backups), which is all part of their scripted troubleshooting procedures and none of which will actually cure this bug once and for all. In the end, when you receive an email giving you the opportunity to rate your "support experience", you state clearly and concisely that the issue is not resolved.

Apple needs to be flooded with legitimate support cases so that this bug gets the recognition and attention that it requires.

You can also provide feedback here. Be sure to change the feedback type to "bug report".

Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply, but unfortunately my phone was out of warranty one month ago (typical, haha).

As a sidenote, I have actually restored my iPhone using iTunes and did not use a backup, chose to set it up as a new phone and still have the problems. Although I'm sure we're not surprised by this because we all know it's a software issue.

Cheers.

Greetings,

No, it's not a software issue, or the millions of us that have never had a problem with our phones would be having the same troubles, and we aren't.

You may have a bad phone, if you have actually restored the phone as new. If you are within a month of being out of warranty, and can prove your troubles to an Apple technician, there is a good chance that they will get you in to a new phone, free, or near to it.

I would sure give it a try. Thankfully I have never had a problem with any of our iPhones, my original, my current 3G, or my wife's 3Gs - I'd be lost without my iPhone, as it manages my day, events, meetings, etc. As I said, it would be worth it to me to give it a try.

Good Luck - Cheers,
M.

NOt a software issue???!!!!
i had a daily dose of 4-6 comas after updating to 3.1.
none since i downgraded back to 3.0.1 and that was 2 weeks ago.
how do you explain that?

I share your frustrations about 3.1, been experiencing this behaviour since upgrading to 3.1. I guess nobody on this thread or the larger one (better to keep one thread going to ensure Apple get the message plus provide a bug report to the apple feedback link) knows the root cause. Its likely its a firmware issue (usually lower level than software) which has a dependancy on hardware, so it might be linked to certain chipset version or a different vendor of certain chips which would explain why some people have never seen the issue. Of course the only people that know and can resolve are apple R&D. So your both correct....

thanks for the correction musicvan
i'm really not that well versed in these things, i mean the subtle differences between firmware and software and their relation to the chipset 🙂 but sounds interesting, this is the first type of speculation that seems to make sense. and it would then also make sense to exchange one phone for another.

and i agree that we should channel all our efforts in the larger thread. although the shock and awe method doesn't seem to work. it's more like plodding in knee deep mud in cold trenches. Poppies for young men, such bitter trade the flower of england face down in the mud, etc. muhaha.

No problem, I work in the tech industry and its easy to replicate a fault but harder to find the actual root cause. To most people firmware is software anyway, thought i would add my thoughts on the matter, if this was caused by one of the applications running on mobile OS X then the update would have appeared already but if its a lower level problem involving certain chipset version then it becomes much more difficult to resolve especially if the problem is on older models/chipsets that are not being currently manufactured. On such a high volume product components are always changing version or supplier as its poor practice to use one source, usually any defects are spotted in the factory but sometimes they escape!

Sure they want to get it right this time (plus resolve the other reports of poor battery life and wifi not working). Always the same with major releases just wait long enough and another will turn up! Yes its easy to get lost in the larger thread but large numbers of people reading/contributing always add weight to the argument, several scattered threads get lost.

How do I downgrade the software? I updated to 3.1 and then a few weeks later I experienced the first issues. After 3 restores I called Apple only to be told that they can't help me firstly because the phone was bought in Australia (I paid $700 to buy the phone from my service provider plus the unlocking from Apple fee) and secondly because my warranty expired 2 days before I called them. Then I drove to an Apple store. As I reached the carpark it started to work again as if nothing had happened. A week or so later (not a single hint of issues in that time) I saw that Apple released 3.1.2 so I updated my phone again. The following day it started into a coma again. It only wakes when it is plugged in to my computer. I have not been able to use my phone in days now and have pretty much given up on it even though I am still paying a monthly fee to use the phone with a Canadian Service Provider. I am extremely annoyed that I cannot use the phone. I love my iPhone and really do not want to have to get a new phone!
