Mini display port to HDMI problem

I have my aluminum Macbook perfectly wired up to my 32 inch RCA HDTV. Nothing will come up on the screen, I've tried detect display, I've tried restarting the computer, unplugging and plugging back in then detect display, turned the tv of and on, but nothing is working. I am currently running Snow Leopard, but when I was on Leopard this process of attaching the TV to the computer just took about 10 minutes of doing desultory processes that I've already described. Any suggestions on how to make it work the first time?

I had the same issue: I was directed to the following apple forum: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4241?viewlocale=en_US

The summation of the resolution is that only certain mini display to hdmi that conform to the VESA DisplayPort Dual-Mode Standard.

- I had the moshi, and it was listed as a supported device but they have removed it from the list because it does not meet the standard.

- The iWires Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter no longer available either.

The only supported one for our brand of Macbook pros is the

Griffin Mini DisplayPort to HDMI with Audio + DVI

It can be bought at the following website or in the store:

http://store.apple.com/us/product/TY600VC/A/griffin-mini-displayport-to-hdmi-wit h-audio-dvi

This article affects the following versions of mac book pros.

  • MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2012 and later) 1
  • MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013)
  • MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012)1
  • Mac mini (Mid 2010 and later)1
  • Mac Pro (Mid 2010)
  • MacBook (Mid 2010 and later)
  • MacBook Pro (Mid 2010 and later)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2010 and later)
  • iMac (Late 2009 and later)

Hope this helps. 🙂

Up until two/three weeks ago, my minidisplay port to hdmi bought from monoprice worked perfectly with my samsung lcd tv ln40a450. Now, the TV no longer recognizes the signal. When the cable is plugged in to the macbook, the blue screen appears and disappears, but still nothing. Tried plugging, unplugging, restarting, turning tv on/off, in all various sequences, but nothing works. I did however find something very peculiar. I was previously using a 15' hmdi cable. When the problem started, I switched to another, shorter (6') hdmi cable, thinking it was the cable problem. That worked... for 3 days. Neither cable works anymore. Tested the cables with my PS3, no problems whatsoever. I will attempt to plug it in to my friend's Sony TV to see if that works and provide an update.

i was having the same problem tonight with a:

- Samsung Smart TV UN46ES6580F

- Macbook Pro 13" mid-2010, 4GB ram

- PPA branded MDP to HDMI cable from @ $19.99 from Fry's

see http://www.frys.com/product/6734705

Basic settings:

- display mirroring

- match desktop size to Samsung TV

Result:

- screen would flicker blue when MDP to HDMI was plugged in

- MBP would recognise the TV (was listed as Samsung up in the DISPLAY icon of top menu bar)

- TV would recognise the MBP (HDMI was a SOURCE option only when the cable was plugged in)

- MPB had screen, TV was black with error message

Solution:

- go into PREFERENCES

- select DISPLAY and look at RESOLUTION window

- select 1080i rather than 1080p

bingo !

PS needed to manually force the audio output in AUDIO-MIDI to HDMI to get the sound out to the TV

PPS some occasional audio errors (no sound for 2-3 seconds) with flash based internet video but clearing FF cache helped a bit (FF 18.0.2, Flash 11.6.602.167)

I found this worked for me. I plugged in my hdmi then went to displays under system preferences. I chose "Scaled" instead of "Best For" and clicked on 720p though you may need a different one. Changing the numbers made the image appear on my tv screen. Changing "mirror displays" like most people are saying didn't work for me. I had mirror displays checked though.

I had the same issue. Here is a summary of what I did:

1) I bought a monoprice mini-displayport<->HDMI cable. Here is the URL to that link:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=102&cp_id=10246&cs_id=1024603&pid=5995&seq=1&format=2

2) I tried the monoprice cable on my samsung 23" LCD monitor. Worked like a charm.

3) I moved the monoprice cable to my 55" Sony Bravia KDL-55EX710 LCD TV. The cable DID NOT work.

4) I spent a couple of hours diagnosing it...to ensure the HDMI port on the TV wasn't bad, I used a mini-displayport<->DVI adapter and a DVI<->HDMI cable...this setup worked fine but wasn't ideal as the main reason for using HDMI was to get audio.

5) Decided I should try a new cable setup. I got the Moshi miniDisplayPort<->HDMI adapter and an Apple HDMI<->HDMI cable. This cable setup WORKED and I can now get both audio+video on my TV. The cables below are the ones I used for my setup.

http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC838ZM/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY

Hope this helps. I don't know why the monoprice cable didn't work on my 55" HDTV (but worked on my Samsung 23" monitor) but I wanted to point that perhaps swapping out the cable setup might work for the folks on this forum.

You have the display set in Extended Desktop mode. In System Preferences>Display thereshould be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen. You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.
Or if you want to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box.

I just acquired the "Kanex Mini DisplayPortto HDMI Cable with Audio Support (10 ft.)" directly from Apple (http://store.apple.com/us/product/H4637ZM/A?fnode=MTY1NDA3Ng). It does not function and will NOT send videoto the external HDMI screen (at this point I am not concerned aboutaudio). The external screen is a LG2762D TV.

Details:

I have a MacBook Pro 13" (early 2011,purchased in July 2011) with the current OS 10.7.2.

I know the mini display port and LG TV bothfunction because I can connect to the TV via the mini display port to DVIadapter on the MacBook and using the DVI input port on the TV.

When I use the Kanex Mini DisplayPort toHDMI Cable and connect it the HDMI input port of the LG TV (of course firstassuring the TV input port, HDMI1 or HDMI2, is set correctly to active on theTV) what happens is the MacBook Pro detects the LG display BUT there is NOIMAGE on the TV and the TV says "No Input Signal".

So, the MacBook Pro detects the TV but nodisplay can be seen on the TV.

I have talked with AppleCare and they tellme the cable is faulty and needs to be replaced.

I am a reasonably technical person and havea good understanding of troubleshooting and I have come to the same conclusion- that the cable is faulty.

However, do any experts out there have anycomments or recommendations? Can Iexpect the replacement cable to work or am I better off with a differentproduct (eg: another mini display port to HDMI adapter together withappropriate HDMI-HDMI cable to get close to the total 10' length of the Kanex)?

Thanks.

PS: Kanex does not appear to have a phone number so I was only able to submit a support request on-line. I have not yet received a reply.
