Early 2009 Aluminum Macbook, Mac OS X (10.6.1)
My Apple brand mini DVI to HDMI worked great for first month….since then it rarely works.
Yesterday HDMI released this:
http://www.macrumors.com/2011/07/08/minidisplay-port-to-hdmi-cables-unlicensed-a nd-cannot-be-sold/
I succeeded in getting the connection back using HDMI. I will report my findings in case it helps someone. I have been following this 17 page epic on the HDMI and mini display port with interest as I have had all the issues. On 2 occasions I managed to get the Mac up on the screen, otherwise it was the usual flicker, nothing on screen, and no recognition on the Mac, so no buttons in the Display preferences to get things moving.
I have the following:
Panasonic TX-P42G20
http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/panasonic-txp42g20-txp42g20b-20100308169.htm
Cabelsson mini display port to HDMI
White HDMI cable from Amazon
Blue Cambridge Audio HDMI cable from Richer Sounds
In the end the cure was simple. I switched the HDMI input to HDMI2 as opposed to HDMI1. On this Panasonic TV, the HDMI connections for HDMI 1,3 and 4 are HDMI v3.1 whereas HDMI2 is v4.0. HDMI2 is also an ARC connection for Audio Return, used when needing the TV sound to go back to an AV Receiver (which I do). I found that by using the v4.0 connection it worked with the Mac but on the v3.1 it doesn't.
I haven't gone through the tests methodically. The only other scenario is the white HDMI cable versus the Cambridge Audio HDMI cable. The white one wasn't working on HDMI1(v3.1) but the blue one worked with HDMI2(v4.0). Perhaps the Cambridge Audio was better quality and worked. I might try that next time and see what happens.
If anyone else has any luck with different HDMI versions on a singular device, please report back, it could shed some light on the issue.
I've tried everything on this ridiculous 17 page HDMI not working-athon that Apple refuses to address with an overall fix.
I bought a cheap one last year when I got my 17" mid 2010 MBP it worked for a month or so then quit. Bought the Moshi adapter in January it worked until yesterday. I'm sick of spending money to do this basic function because Apple doesn't offer their own HDMI support. Screen flickers blue, then nothing. Tried everything recommended here and nothing. I know Lion is coming next week and I want this resolved before then and it's worked already for months. This is my second round of dealing with this and if they tell me I need a new newer best bestist adapter they can keep their trap shut. I have 5 HDMI devices and used all of their cords, nothing. I will try the local Apple Store here in Vegas but my Samsung Syncmaster 2493HM 24"monitor is on a Bretford Desk Mount and I will not be taking it off of there to bring to the store. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
MonoPrice miniDisplayPort to HDMI cable 15'
MacBookPro6,2
Multiple LG and Samsung 1080p displays.
I initially purchased this cable from MonoPrice 4 weeks ago. It arrived, and I could not get it to work with any of my displays or any of several MacBooks and MacPros. No response on the displays or the computers when connected.
The Apple miniDisplayPort to DVI adapters with DVI to HDMI cables that I already own work fine to accomplish this task, but I was eager to get the added benefit of HDMI audio with this new cable.
MonoPrice quickly sent me a replacement cable. That didn't work either. I have now gone through 3 replacement cables, all with the same result. MonoPrice has now determined that all of the cables were defective, and they no longer sell this product.
It seems that when buying "reasonably priced" cables, it can be hit or miss.
It would be cool that someone from apple come here and give out solutions because as mentionned a few post ago, I have a hdmi to minidisplay port adapter with an hdmi cable and I sometimes it works, sometime not. when I plug it, macbook pro flickers blue and when I change sources on the tv, the mac flickers too so there's got to be some kind of signal going throught this cable...
Do I have to buy and buy again and buy and get that apple branded adapter wich is probably totally the same as mine but with a different name on it.. If I remember, I bought it on monoprice a while ago. It worked fine when I fisrt bought it and tested it with my benq, now that I need it, it only works when I restart everything unpluging everything. And even then, it still don't work everytime.
Just so you all know. I have been having this issue for three months or so ever since the software update.
I have read from about page 5 of this epic thread to here and tried every solution.
I am using the iWires MDP to HDMI cable. It worked well on my old Panasonic 32" until the update and then stopped working. However it still works on my LED screen (acer 27" display).
I have ruled out the hdmi sockets. They work.
I have ruled out the wire/adapter. It works on my monitor.
It is definately a software problem... It doesnt work on my New 42' Panasonic either.
I am also VERY SORRY to report that today I UPGRADED to OSX LION 10.7 and ... still the same issue.
My monitor works, my HD TV does not.
Apple has done nothing to fix this issue in Lion...
Ok I am haveing a simalar problem. I have both a 17in mac book pro, and a 27in iMac, the mini dp to hdmi cable works with the laptop but not on my iMac. I can't figure it out. Both computers see my tv and call it the same thing, I can change settings but nothing changes. ***? I hope apple addresses this although this first guy posted in late 09 and still no responce from mac.
I also just started to experience this problem after updating to 10.6.8 or whatever...I was soooooo happy watching media on my biiiiig TV screen before that fatal upgrade (ah, irony).
This really is an epic thread and I hope Apple notices and fixes the issue. I will be glued to this thread from now on.
Same here. I just bought a 2010 13" 2.4 Core Duo MacBook pro, with the lion upgrade. I've been using my 2006 macbook as a media server through the second monitor for a few years now, and it worked great. Very dissipointed that the newest hardware/software won't let me do that task.
Apple, please fix this.
I just got the new Mac Mini (2011) and tried to connect it to my Samsung PN63C8000 Plasma TV and it initially did not work. I had it connected to HDMI 3. I switched it to HDMI 4 and it worked. My HDMI cable is some relatively high end cable that my AV installer ran.
For reference, I was running a Hackintosh with 10.5.8 on it and it worked fine with HDMI 3. I had actually upgraded the hackintosh to 10.6.? (7 or 8, I believe), and the HDMI 3 did not work (got no signal). I assumed it was a driver issue that I was not going to be able to hack, so I gave up on it and decided to buy a new Mini (they were finally good enough to meet my needs.....as a side bar, if you don't have to go the Hacktintosh route, don't....it's not worth the effort from a time perspective.... but prior to the new Mini's, there just wasn't a low-cost model fast enough and in the right form factor for me)... Anyway, I digress. Basically, it seems to be partly a software issue and partly a hardware issue. I'll probably try the hackintosh again on a different HDMI port and see if it works. Will post those results when I get them.
Just to say that I have the same problem - MacBook Pro early 2011 originally connected via HDMI to Benq GL2440H; then stopped - 'No Signal Detected'.
Bought a Moshi adapter at the Genius bar to replace the HK one I'd been using with my HDMI cable and it worked fine for a month, even in Bootcamp. Now it's failing again, even on the Mac side, as others have described.
Meanwhile, the old 'failed' adapter and the original HDMI cable still work fine with a Panasonic TV.
Incidentally, I appreciate that VGA is a lost cause for bootcamp although that still works on the Mac side.
Just wondered if BenQ is more prone to the problem than other display units? Alternatively, is there a way to avoid the miniDisplayPort?
My solution as listed above wasn't stable, it's back to being a problem. I managed to get the Mac to see the TV when changing between 1080p and 1080i but I switched to another display and it vanished. Then when I tried to get it back again it proved impossible.
So I know the HDMI converter works and the cable works, so it must be a temperamental element of the Mac OSX. It would be useful if Apple helped everyone now it is so endemic.
What about this makes the behavior so inconsistent?
It seems like everyone has a symptom like, "it worked for a while with this TV, but not that TV."
Does it have to do with the HDMI version of the TV or cable?
My 2010 MacBook Pro 2.4 Core II Duo running Lion, using an aftermarket mini-displayport to HDMI cable, to a 32" Insigina 720p from 2008 doesn't work. The MacBook screen goes blue for a second when the cable is connected or disconnected, but doesn't recognize the display. The TV always displays "No Sync". The same symptoms everyone seems to be having.
Apple really needs to fix this. This is a factory feature that's not working for allot of people. If I wanted a pain-in-the-*** diagnostic process to get factory options to work, I'd buy a Windows system. The thing I love about Macs is that you usually don't have to deal with things like this.
I got rid of my cable provider a year ago and have been using my TV as a second monitor for Netflix and Hulu as my only media source. It works fine with my 2006 MacBook using a mini-DVI to DVI adapter w/ DVI to HDMI cable into my 32" Insigina.
The fact that my 2010 MacBook Pro can't do this is extremely frustrating.
Extremely frustrating x1000. We need a fix! I use my mac to show what we're doing at university, in computer science for people willing to study in our university here in quebec. I was using multiple display in an interactive way but I'll need to find an old mac with a dvi output because my new macbook can't do it right with lion. It really s u c k s.

What the **** apple!?
I don't know whether this will work for you but it's currently working for me and suggests that the 'handshake' between my MBP (early 2011) and BenQ LED (GL244), connected by HDMI cable and Moshi MDP adaptor, is the critical point - and time.
Try the following ...
1. Everything off, no power cables connected.
2. Boot up Mac (... this works for me in Mac and Bootcamp)
3. Connect the HDMI cable with MDP adaptor into the display unit (still unpowered)
4. Plug the MDP adaptor into the Mac's mini display port and almost at same time ..
5. Put the power plug (live) into the display unit
With my BenQ, I noticed it was still flashing orange even after pulling out the power cable so reasoned it was remembering something. So, waited till power drained away. When the power plug goes back in, it flashes green - the searching and connection indicator colour. So far, had about 95% success.
Good luck. I'll report back if this turns out to be just another flash in the pan ...
