Early 2009 Aluminum Macbook, Mac OS X (10.6.1)
Actually I did mention the threads on their own support forum but he claimed to know nothing about it and just asked 'well what did they say?'. I find it hard to work out if they're talking bull or not. It seems to be Apple's stance that it's always the cable's fault.
I'm getting the impression that Mini DisplayPort (which is an Apple patent based on a developement they made to the existing DisplayPort standard) is only compatible with DisplayPort, not the HDMI standard which Apple play down and claim its 'hit and miss', ie, not a proper standard. Apple also don't make their own Mini DP to HDMI adaptor which is tells us a lot.
Seemingly no one from Apple gives a **** about the issue here it is really top notch customer service! Money went down the drain for many of us for spending cash on different adapters and got as far as a No Signal Message.
Also Apple states in the MBP and the MacBook user manual that you can hook up an HDMI cable and, depending on what year your computer was made, get either picure or picture and sound out using an HDMI adapter
Well that's just blatantly not true timbloke... the older macbooks didn't send audio with HDMI, but the newer ones (mid 2010 and later) all do. I have it running like that now so please don't post without facts!
That's what I just said- depending on what year your computer was made, you'll either get picture or picture and sound out of your mini DisplayPort. All you did was clarify the year which was 2010 apparently. Great job.
I don't know what chughe17 is talking about. But my MacBook Pro 2011 supports sound and picture from my mini display port to hdmi.
Personally whilst running snow leopard about 6months ago, I did a system update. The thing just stopped working. Literally, as I rebooted after the update, it stopped working.
The problem seemed to be limited to mirroring the display only. If you add the display then it works ok. When mirroring it seemed to flick in and out, redetecting the display then eventually giving up.
Now updated to mountain lion and it works ok.
That's you're problem but if you go back through the thread you'll see that alot of people it's been the other way round, ie the Mountain Lion install killed it, or like me that its never worked at all using multiple cables, adaptors, televisions and verisons of OS X. Seems to me that it doesn't work and Apple aren't going to do anything about it. Dress it up anyway you want.
Hello again. I'm chiming in once more because the thread is still receiving posts 3 years and 41 pages after the original question and I'd like to update progress I've had since I last commented in September (14th, 2012) in case it helps anyone else.
No progress...but at least I haven't gone backwards 😝.
I'm using a Kanex cable (mini display port to HDMI) and have managed to hook, and un-hook, my MBP (purchased early 2012) to a Sony HDTV numerous times without issue. I'm running Windows 7 and have ditched the Bootcamp graphics software (which I believe was the cause of at least some of my initial connection problems) in favour of Catalyst Control Centre and drivers that offers much more comprehensive options with regard to adjusting settings, tweaking appearance and mirroring etc. - options that were nowhere to be seen with the software and drivers provided by bootcamp (yes, the drivers and software were impossible to upgrade through the AMD website 😠).
The computer now stores my preferred settings and my screen mirrors perfectly almost as soon as it's connected to the TV and the sound is fine. The only issue I've struck is on closing the lid the TV display goes screwy.
This information is probably no good for the majority of you guys operating the Mac OS, but I at least feel confident in saying that the cable I'm using works as it should as does the hardware on the computer. Perhaps issues can therefore be put down to Mac software (as seems to be the general consensus)? To be honest, right now I just CBF logging out and back in and testing my cable etc in OSX, not unless Apple wants to cut me a 'Genius' paycheque.
This is still an unresolved issue. Except for egoistic replies of some apple fanboys. I have eary 2012 MBP MD103, on Mountain lion.
When i connect a external HD tv from thunderbolt port to mdp-hdmi adaptor and an hdmi cable. The MBP screen blinks to blue and returns. The hdtv does not detect any signal. The MBP does not detect any display connected to it. Tried all solutions in this thread but to not avail.
Hope everyone can see this. Well I have a Yamaha RX-v571 Reciever and a Imac from 2010. On my old reciever I didn't have hdmi hook up. All av hookups so I went directly to the tv with dvi to hdmi and had an rca with head phone jack to Imac to reciever for sound. With my new reciever it has a spot for hdmi and rca on the same channel of the reciever so you can stream and listen at the same time. The only in conviece is beside the hook is through the front of the reciever is that I have extra cables running from mac that I wish I didn't have there. But all in all I can blast music and watch net flix or even surf the web. When I'm tired I can play my ps3 or switch to cable tv to watch the evening news. so dvi to hdmi hook up to tv for picture sound is seperate rca with phone jack to reciever.
Hope this help future people out.
I ran into one of the problems described on this thread, banged my head against the wall and finally discovered a solution, so I figured I'd share.
Like many of you, my Thunderbolt audio output worked fine for a while then mysteriously stopped working one day. Upgrading to Mountain Lion wasn't the cause but also didn't help. Incidentally, the problem also manifested on my Bootcamp install.

Problem
No audio output via Thunderbolt / mini Display Port when connecting Macbook Pro to an HDMI-based AV system. No additional output target is available under System Preferences > Sound > Output.
Solution
Configure the AV system to disable HDMI control, HDMI pass-thru and HDMI audio return channel (ARC). Details below.
Components
Macbook Pro (Mid-2012) with up-to-date Mountain Lion
moshi MiniDisplay Port to HDMI Adapter with Audio
AmazonBasics High Speed HDMI cable (3 feet)
Sony HT-SS380 AV system
Panasonic PT-AE900U projector
Root problem
The projector does not support HDMI audio (it's a projector) and the AV system passed this fact through to the Macbook pro. Thus the Mac reflected the fact that no additional audio output target was available
Problem diagnosis
On a hunch, I disconnected the projector from the AV system then reconnected the Macbook to the AV system. The additional audio output target was then available (SONY AVAMP) although the video obviously no longer worked.
Specific solution
On the HT-SS380 set "CTRL HDMI" to "OFF". This in turn turns off HDMI pass-through and HDMI audio return channel.
General solution
I suspect that this may represent a more general solution that can be applied in similar situations. If you're using an audio output device (projector, TV) that doesn't support HDMI audio, that fact may be forwarded to your Macbook, through your AV system. That in turn will disable the ability to output audio over Thunderbolt / mini Display Port.
Problem:
I had a similar problem with my MacBook Pro 2009 model. After erasing all conent and reinstalling Mac OS X (10.8.2), the problem was not resolved, displaying content from my mini dvi to Sony Bravia TV. I went to a Mac Store, and the genius person was able to find a solution.
Solution:
I was using a adaptor mini DVI to HDMI, which no longer works for MacBook Pro 2009 models. It did work here and there for a 2011 MacBook Air.
There is a company called IWIRES out of UK, that makes a single Cable, HDMI to MiniDVI. This product is sold through Apple in UK, but not here in the states. I was not willing to spend $45 for this, when I could buy iTV.
I was able to find a similar product on Amazon for a fraction of the cost: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003OC6LWM/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00
This works great. No issues. I still continue to use my audio wire for the 2009 model, but not needed for 2011 Macbook Air.
Questione Answered:
Here's what you need to do.
1. Turn off both your T.V. and Mac.
2. Plug in all your connector cables: Mini Displayport to HDMI converter, and HDMI cable.
3. Turn on T.V. or Monitor.
4. Power up your Mac.
For some unknown reason the 2010 iMac can not transfer the video data when it is on, it must be restarted.
Hope this helped!
lol i wanted to add a last line disclaimer
"if this does not help you, only god can"
On a serious note it is really frustrating when something you paid premium price for does not give premium results. so i understand the pain. My initial mac book pro had same problem and a logic board issue but luckily i got the piece replaced.
