@Airbum88,
Most cables do. However pre 2011 mbps dont port sound to mdp. So it depends on the model of your mbp.
If your mbp does support audio you will still have to change audio settings on your mbp afterwards. Most HDMI devices wont support volume control on MBP. So i suggest you download sunflowerbed(free app)
You need to go to sound settings. Set output to sunflower 2 channel
Now once the video feed is showing on the ledtv. click on the sunflower icon on top (if does not already show, click open sunflowerbed form applications) and it will show 3 options - none, internal speakers, hdmi. click on hdmi so that it is the ticked option. now you should have sound output through the tv speakers
I set email notifications a long time ago on this and have been receiving emails for what seems like years about replies here. Can't believe how long this is, but I finally figured out how to stop the notifications. Again, my advice is to buy new cables, the cheap one with lots of five star reviews from dx.com is good, and if it gets kinked and needs replacing it's only about $7 for another one. So stock up on a big order, because free shipping from China is SLOW.
HDCP is for commercial rights holder protection. If you'r playing anything that has HDCP encoded, and you use a DVI adapter, you have broken the HDCP spec and therfore will find yourself in a world of poo. Lost of a single color, blue screen, no audio, audio drops i or out, de rez of content , etc. The symptoms seem so different from one box to another, but it's all the same problem. HDCP compliance is un available via DVI.
Non-apple users would get a real kick out of this thread. These products are touted as where technology starts and ends as far as ease of use and build quality is concerned. Having switched to apple at the urging of my family I'm actually looking forward to my next upgrade back to a simple, cheap reliable windows (hopefully not 8) laptop. Frustration hasn't abated with the inflexible OS (the latest i-tunes is a doozy) and an issue like this HDMI out mess that has remained unaddressed by the manufacturer for so long after paying top dollar for my MBP - apple have made it an easy decision.
Thanks CB. Sorry but what do you mean by clip the GFX switch 3 times? I have gtfxcardstatus 2.3 and have tried going back and form from integrated, discrete, and dynamic to no avail. Am I missing something? Thanks.
I just got back from the apple store. They said the problem is the logic board and it needs to be replaced. The genius didnt really seem all that competent. Can this really be the problem? I have a 2011 MBP with 10.8.2. I have tried different cables and monitors. I also tried it with ubuntu and no luck. When I connect the mini display cable to the cpu nothing happens at all. No blank or blue screen handshake. GTFX or pram reset didnt work.
Any ideas out there? I am losing my faith in apple for the moment.
When I went to see the apple guys they said the same thing. I declined to have my logic board replaced because I didn't think that was the problem. I tried a better adaptor and it's worked perfectly since.
Having said that, I was getting a connection, it just was full of static or flashes of screen but completely unusable. Since you don't have any connection it may very well be that for you!
folks - it definitely ISN'T the logic board.. but, why not tell them that they can go ahead and replace it and, if they show you it working afterwards, AND ARE WILLING TO GIVE YOU A ONE YEAR PARTS AND LABOUR WARRANTY (which is certainly quite reasonable for the amount they're gonna want to charge you for it...) then why not go for it..
but I don't think they'll do it because they KNOW that a logic board would cause many other probs before this one silly fault.
I am not saying that the universal problem is a logic board issue. The most common problem seeming to be a mdp/hdmi compatibility issue and fast burnout of adaptors.
But the problem for maltmandan seems a logic board issue as he seems to have tried all the solutions we suggested. I had my mbp replaced for a logic board issue and had cable issue with the new one.
so if the solutions listed here dont work, then probably its a logic board issue.
@maltmandan normally logic board issues tend to heat up the mbp a lot. so if ur machine is overheating then you can almost be sure.
"so if the solutions listed here dont work, then probably its a logic board issue."
or, perhaps, it's not a solvable problem...that has nothing to do with the logic boards since the Non-thunderbolt system seems to work fine with HDMI and, if you read back, you'll find that for many of us, it all worked just fine - in my own case for over a year - and then SUDDENLY stopped... without any other "bad logic board" symptoms (not exactly a "fast burn out of adaptors").
You'll also find that people have tried it with NEW machines.. and that logic board problems are not generally THIS specific to the one function.
But, as I said, to each his own - try it and see if it works.. but I sure as **** wouldn't fork out the cash without the guarantee that it WILL fix the issue and that it won't simply re-occur.
Hey guys. I thought i was having a problem when connecting my iMac to my TV (42" LG LCD). Turns out i didn't realize that my TV was just a 2nd monitor, not a mirror of my Mac. I'm using a Belkin Mini DisplayPort HDMI cable. I was able to adjust the resolution on my monitor to 1080p so now everything is much clearer. My only beef is that i haven't figured out how to get the audio through my TV or receiver.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. This setup plus XBMC will be amazing!
Go to settings - sound - output - it show show your hdmi device as an option. select it. your sound should work now. If teh HDMI device does not show up then probably your mbp does not support sound through hdmi (pre 2011 models).
Only glitch here is you would not have volume control for HDMI device. It will always be sex to max. Solution is to install sunflowerbed (freeware) and settings - sound - output -sunflower 2 ch. Click on sunflower icon on top bar and select HDMI.
PS: Regarding you not mirroring your display is not exactly the problem being discussed here.
So I have an issue..my macbook pro won't allow me to even see the arrangement tab when i try to detect displays. This is the error message that popped up, "The Arrangement tab of Displays preferences is hidden because you only have a single display attached to this computer." I don't know how to get my mac to recognize any additional displays. I have an Mini display port to HDMI connector and set it to my tv, it flashes blue once and nothing happens to the tv or my mac. Under displays I don't see any option to mirror anything, nor any addional tabs that i've seen on multiple youtube videos or tried to find answers on various forums. Has anyone had any similar issues? Please help 😟
@Sassy most people who posted on this thread had the same problem. And we have a had moderate success in resolving the issue. Read my post on page 41 (last post) to see a summary of various solutions which may or may not work.
Probably you will have to change your mdp to hdmi adaptor and get a mdp male to hdmi male single cable.
