Mini display port to HDMI problem

I have my aluminum Macbook perfectly wired up to my 32 inch RCA HDTV. Nothing will come up on the screen, I've tried detect display, I've tried restarting the computer, unplugging and plugging back in then detect display, turned the tv of and on, but nothing is working. I am currently running Snow Leopard, but when I was on Leopard this process of attaching the TV to the computer just took about 10 minutes of doing desultory processes that I've already described. Any suggestions on how to make it work the first time?

all of this is well and good - but in reality, this solution has not worked for everybody (ike myself).

I've been battling this issue for almost three years - and tried all the suggested solutions, short of a dawn goat sacrifice.. and some work for a while.. some work longer but eventually (two months at the longest) the "connection" gets broken - without any apparent change being made at either end - and then it no longer works.

For those who are convinced that they've found the HDMI Grail cable, I'm happy for you but I reserve judgement for a while and I ask you to explain why YOUR solution doesn't work for everyone?

and the underlying question, so eloquently asked in the preceding post - WHY DOESN'T IT JUST WORK??

with any cable designed to bridge the two ports, or any adaptor designed for that very purpose... when they ALL work on other machines but Apple...??

Why is that?

Hi Apple have never addressed this unfortunately. You are right, it seems that what works for some doesnt work for others. I cant help you but I can only suggest what worked for me. A workaround that might work is something like airdisplay. I sometimes connect my tablet to the TV and use airdisplay to mirror my macs screen. It works very well for me.

I have a 2007 Imac with the older mini display port (mini-dvi). My mini-dvi to hdmi female just recently stopped working after about 6 months. I originaly used a mini-dvi to dvi adapter purchased from apple and it worked like a charm, with a belkin dvi to hdmi cord. I lost the belkin dvi to hdmi cord. My question is should I try buying a new belkin dvi to hdmi cord attached to my (apple) mini-dvi adapter or try a mini-dvi to hdmi male cable. I see that people have had success with the mdp/thunderbolt to hdmi male cable on the newer Mac MDP/thunderbolt ports. Would I have to same success with the mini-dvi (older mdp port) to hdmi male cable or should i try the apple mini-dvi adapter to a belkin dvi to hdmi cord? any suggestions are greatly appreciated

Yeah I've had the same problem forever. When I first got my mac book Air last December, I also bought the thunderbolt HDMI cable from the Apple store with my macbook air, and when I got home and tried to plug it into the t.v. it didn't work. After spending hours learning how to use it and trying everything I finally gave up after reading the forums here and I waited for a mac softwear update figuring the new OSX softwear was so new it had a few bugs in it. I seemed to be right, because then with the next softwear update it worked. I could connect my macbook air to different t.v.s using the thunderbolt HDMI cable I bought at the Apple store when I got my computer. Then months later this week one day I connected my coputer to my family T.V. in the morning and it worked. I tried again in the afternoon after a Mac OSX softwear update and it didn't work. It's not been working since the last Mac OS update again! I'm not surprised since this has happened before when I first bought my pc. It is very frustrating... I'll just keep the thunderbolt HDMI cable and keep trying ocasionally hoping some day the softwear developers will once again resolve the issue.... 😠 I can tell you in the past it was not the computer, or the cable, or the t.v. or the order in which I turned the t.v. on and connected my cable, or turned my macbook air on either, so it probably isn't the issue this time either...

I completley agree with you re: itunes and OSX, and HDMI. I too thought apple would be simpler, but it's a constant pain in the neck. I don't like the new itunes updates, the inflexible OSX softwear, and that the thunderbolt to HDMI periodically spasmatically works when connecting my macbook air to a T.V. Frustration doesn't even begin to define it....😠

I bought an HDMI cable that is NON Apple-made, and so far, it's working great.

But I completely agree with most of the comments on this group... the quality of Apple products has dropped significantly. I've bene having constant problems with my MacBook Pro & iMac.

I was able to deal with the fact that Apple had become extremely stingy (dicontinuation of the soft cases that used to be given with new ipods, remote controls that used to come with a new MacBook or iMac, the numeric pad on the Apple keyboards - I can't believe we have to buy a brand new keyboard & pay extra just to get a numeric pad... something that's included on ALL other keyboards - and more), but now it feels like Apple is trying to save on some more cash, and build their products in China.

Either they need to get their act together & think about their customers, or another company needs to take their place.

I concur! There is no reason that something so simple should NOT have been fixed by now. This is probably the biggest issue I've read regarding Macs in general.

That being said, I have the same issue. I keep thinking I found a solution, only to be wrong the next day. What usually works for me is to just leave both the Mac and TV alone for about five or tenon items and try again. I've also noticed that running large processes before plugging your adapter in does play a significant role in this. If I plug everything in after playing a game, nothing. If I do it on a fresh start up, it typically works. It's time consuming but, better than nothing.

the other day I posted how angry I was because of this issue and APPLE DELETED MY POST. What a bunch of loosers! Instead of deleting my posts you should fix this problem and tell people what the heck is going on. I think we should go to their freaking stores all over the world and DEMAND they fix this issue or give us our money back. What do you guys think?

You know what is CRAZY? I asked my girlfriend to keep turning TV on and OFF while I work my my MAc Book Schmo which is connected to my SONY Bravia via Moshi Moshi Adapter. After about 10 minutes of off and on it came back. But I knoq that after I disconnect this crapp it will stop working again because thats what it does.

GOD **** YOU APPLE!!! FIX THISSSSSSSS!!!!

I know right they kill all my messages :-) ROTFL

No idea what MDP is but I tried asking my girlfriend to keep turning the tv on and off and it worked after about 55 rounds 😟 how can that be huh? that's beyond electronics. some kind of animal thing is going on I swear. I did mention a few words like )(*#&$Q(#*&$ and )(Q*#&)(QW#*&$)(*& and also )Q(#*&$#)(*Q#& I guess their feelings got heart. They wanna keep it clean but may I suggest they fix this problem?

Hey, mdp means mini display port. You know the moshi adapter you have? the place where it plugs into your mac is the mini display port (moshi didnt work for me either btw). I tried several adapters but nothing worked consistently. What worked for me was a mini display port to hdmi CABLE which I got from NEET for only a couple pounds (uk) . So for over a year now ive had no issues with it, can connect to anything and everything that the adapters didnt work on. Give it a go and stop messin with the tv you might damage it.

I checked on amazon.com and i couldnt find the neet cable although im sure with more searching you can find it, but here is something you should get

http://www.amazon.com/HDE®-Mini-Display-Adapter-Cable/dp/B009K62HQ0/ref=sr_1_1?i e=UTF8&qid=1378716300&sr=8-1&keywords=mini+displayport+to+hdmi

Sep 9, 2013 4:13 AM in response to Vic-zx

so you are saying its just the CABLE!!!??? ALl I need is a new CABLE from NEET? And by the way my MDP (The moshi moshi one) is the only one that has MDP plug on the side on which it connects to the MAcBook PRo on the other its just HDMI and TV has HDMI is I am not using MDP to HDMI cable I am using HDMI to HDMI cable, dang it clear as mud huh? I really find it very hard to believe because I tried like 3 cables. One of which was a brand new one I was saving for later but had to open it to see if it would work but didn't.

Sep 9, 2013 4:34 AM in response to eNtelligence101

Oh I see you have the macbook with the hdmi socket too. Yeh it sounds really annoying for you. My mac only has the mini display port connection. Why dont you give it a try? the cable is quite cheap and you could probably pick one up quick and try it. It doesnt necessarily need to be by NEET, just any mdp to hdmi cable that has high ratings.

Have you taken your mac into the apple store and asked them to look at it? I did that with mine twice, the first time it worked in the store then i went home and it didnt work, the second time they ran a diagnostic and found nothing wrong and suggested me to get a new adapter, three adapters later nothing worked and i came accross the millions of posts by ppl with the same issue. After trying everything suggested here (switch tv on off, reset PRAM NVRAM etc, and a few others) i saw the hdmi mdp cable on amazon and gave it a go, thankfully it worked and hasnt let me down.

There are some workarounds too. For example, i have an asus tablet and ive installed airdisplay on mac and tablet (its basically a wireless monitor extension program), connect the tablet to the tv and use airdisplay to mirror my mac to the tv, works very well over my wireless router and using the mac as a wireless network. You could do the same thing with an old windows laptop you have lying around it will mirror your mac onto the tv.

Sep 9, 2013 5:09 AM in response to Vic-zx

no my mac does not have hdmi socket. it only has the mini socket. I then connect my moshi adapter which is mdi to hdmi connector right? then I use hdmi to hdmi cable (3 different ones) and it does not work. I did resets and restarts. I spoke to apple on the phone they helped me do the resets (this time for free) but then urged me to take it to the apple store.

I was scheduled to go to the store and I tried it again and it worked. so couple days later my scheduled appointment with apple has passed I tried using it again and now it didnt work.

The I said screw this. I am not going to waste any more time on this. But then I got an email that someone had replied to my email on this board which I posted when this problem started so now I am stuck here responding to emails or comments I know will not help.

I think Apple should read this, stop telling us to ewaste more money because I would rather swallow a razor blade then give apple another dyme until they fix all this so that the stuff that they sold me, overpriced stuff made in chine, god dang works. OKAY!!!!
