Mini display port to HDMI problem

Same problem here. I went out and bought an hdmi cable and mini display to hdmi cable. I got everything hooked up and all that was displayed on my tv was the standard screensaver image. I ended up going into my system preferences and opening my display options. I then opened arrangement and clicked detect displays. So system preferences>display>arrangement>detect displays. Everything appears to be displaying correctly except i dont have sound (which you can always link your macbook up to seperately you just might have a slight delay). Hope this helps some of you.

I have ordered the 3m MDP to HDMI cable from NEET.

For reference if it is a power issue which I also have been suspecting, how long is your cable Vic-zx?

Does anyone have any ideas as to why Apple would not manufacture an mDP to HDMI adapter? They have their own brand of VGA and DVI adapters (I have used both), but every listing for a Mac says you you need to have a third-party adapter if you want to go to HDMI. Perhaps this is the conspiracy theorist in me talking, but it seems strange that they wouldn't make one for such a popular cable technology, even though I know they are trying to push Thunderbolt monitors. Do they have an idea of what makes these third-party adapters that they suggest buying die off prematurely, I wonder?

I think Apple knows of this but just doesn't comment on it because it would cause mass returns of these MacBooks.

It's definately their problem since the collective configurations on this thread covers so many different adapters, cables and TVs. It must be a Apple hardware or software issue.

But since the issue isn't admitted by Apple they can keep fisting us harder by selling us adapters that break or even worse, charge us for replacement parts because of their design flaw.

So I was out of town over the holidays and my Dad's newer macbook pro was having the same issue. I was using an off brand DVI to HDMI as well as an Apple mini display to DVI. Since he has applecare, I sat on the phone with their support guys for an hour trying all kinds of display and graphic card resets, etc, to no avail. Then he asked me if I had a different minidisplay to DVI adapter I could try. I told him I shouldn't need to because the one I was currently using worked on a monitor I had and a Sony TV, but I tried it anyway. It was a cheap knockoff brand, but to my surprise, it worked!

He said he would replace my apple adapter when I got home. Anyway, long story long...this leads me to believe that all adapters are not created equal, and even the apple ones fail / only work in certain circumstances.

I've gone ahead and ordered one through Amazon from PNY because it had over 150 reviews with an approximate 4.5 star rating. The only other one listed with such rave reviews was from a company called BlueRigger, but I have ordered from them before and it died like the others. They were helpfull though in sending me a replacement (which died) at no cost to me. Every other company/adapter listed has 3 and 3.5 star reviews, so I'm skeptical, as you can imagine.

I ordered just the adapter, but now that you mention it, I am going to go back and order the straight mDP to HDMI cable as well. I have had one of those before too and it seemed to last longer than these adapters, but it did eventually succumb.

I've been a loyal Apple customer for as long as I can remember. Our family brought home an Apple IIGS when I was 6 years old and I've been in the Mac camp since - even during the loathsome 90's era. Like everyone else here, I just want a resolution to this issue and to move on. As CyborgPatrick has said, we've tried so much collectively that it's hard to believe it's the third party equipment causing these failures, but we'll never know if we get no input from Apple. All this is doing is tarnishing their image, at least to me.

Apple havent addressed this thread or replied to anyone here. Its definitely an Apple issue and they are purposely not owning up to it. There is no way I will believe that third party adapters are to blame.

Please, somebody help me... I'm user of Denon 1911 receiver, but my MBA 2013 isn't able to detect it through cheap MPD-HDMI cable. The screen just blinks few times and that's all. To make things more compicated:

1.I tried connecting to my receiver girlfriend's MBA 2012 using the same cable- everything works like a charm

2.I tried connecting my Mac directly to TV- again, works like charm.

Any ideas why my Mac isn't able to speak with Denon receiver? Hardware seems to be OK...

I purchased Apple's mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter from Staples yesterday evening and it seems to work OK for now, but my post got removed for my My MacBook Kills Displayport Adapters group. It's too bad. I hope this one lasts a while longer than the third-party ones.

That's what I'm currently using, MDP to DVI adapter from Apple and using jack for audio, at least they have sound and video in sync between outputs.

Although it worked without flaws for about a month it has started glitching out when the adapter is at a weird angle but rotating the adapter or plugging it out and back in fixes it.

I feel like a yoga instructor with all the different ways I've tried to position these cables to get the most life out of them. Right now, I have the MacBook flat on my desk with the adapter plugged in and laying flat along with it. I've babied these things since they started going haywire, but hopefully this one lasts longer. If not, I suppose I have Apple's 1-year warranty with which to exchange it!
