Mini display port to HDMI problem

I have my aluminum Macbook perfectly wired up to my 32 inch RCA HDTV. Nothing will come up on the screen, I've tried detect display, I've tried restarting the computer, unplugging and plugging back in then detect display, turned the tv of and on, but nothing is working. I am currently running Snow Leopard, but when I was on Leopard this process of attaching the TV to the computer just took about 10 minutes of doing desultory processes that I've already described. Any suggestions on how to make it work the first time?

Hi, I have been reading lots of the forums where people are having issues with "Artifacts" being present on their screen when you go from display port to TV via HDMI. I have been having similar issues with this. The cable worked fine for several weeks, then suddenly blue, pink and green stripes appear or white noise appears. In many instances the mirror display would turn itself off and I would have to go back into the display icon and select "detect" displays - this usually did the trick and would reset itself. Recently, this stopped fixing the problem.

I cam across a web forum much like this one, except in this forum the discussion was about "overscanning" which I understood it to be a problem with the Monitor or TV and not with the cable or the computer. The suggestion was the if your display on your Mac is set to 1080 that the output is at 1080 but that the TV or Monintor isn't capable of handling 1080 even if it is HD. The suggestion was that the HDTVs and monitors we are using aren't true HD but closer to 720. I went back into the detect display and set it to 720, and now it works like perfect again. So, maybe this will help a lot of you guys out there who are using HDTV or monitors, try setting it to 720 or ensure that your TV or monitor is infact 1080 or TrueHD. I am in no way a computer tech, so forgive my lack of correct technical terminology.

Hi there,

I bought a belink MDP-to-HDmi adapter at the Apple Store for my Macbook & LG TV and it only lasted 2 months before it started flickering, popping and causing a "no signal" warning on my TV. Sorry to say, but the belink doesn't seem to fix this on-going issue.

Let me know how it ends up working out for you! I just purchased a cheap one from China and am awaiting for it to arrive. Fingers crossed*

FIXED! Replacing the mini display to HDMI adapter cleared all problems. I usually don't post solutions, but how else can you know what works?

Macbook Pro, 2010, OSX 6.8 and 9.2, wouldn't display on any HDMI device. Yet it used to! Took it to the Genius bar, they said it was the mac, wanted to keep the mac for ransom, horrible repair charge. Asked to see a new adapter with their monitor. That worked! Lesson: Don't trust the genius bar. Second, my Chinese adapter worked fine for a bit (only $5) then quit. Apple didn't have an Apple model, but sold me the Belkin adapter. So, while it's a passive adapter, it can fail.

Solution: There's no magic in connecting an HDMI display. Plug it in, on or off, Mac on or off. It just works, like a second monitor. Keep in mind you don't get to set the display resolution, thus if you're going for say, 1920 for full screen display, you may have to make sure your source material is set for 16x9, or you may get black borders, wasting resolution. I had to trim all 4x3 photos to 16x9 to get a full screen display on my Panasonic projector.

I just started having this problem on my Macbook Pro 13.3 (2012) a couple of days ago.

It intermittently connects to my Dell 2430m using Belkin mini-display port adapter to HDMI-DVI cable. I also tested with a no-name mini display port adapter, an Olevia LCD TV and HDMI cable. Same thing. There is a flicker on the macbook, but it doesn't pick up the TV or monitor. There doesn't appear to be any consistency. Im baffled.

Just a followup. I replaced the adapter like Brucertld did and now its working fine. Before, I was using a Belkin which has been working until a few days ago. I also tested a no-name adapter that was lying around and that didn't work. It's hard to believe two adapters failed at the same time.

Anyways, I'm now using an Insignia adapter I got from Best Buy and its working just fine. Its ports actually have a tighter fit than the other two adapters.

Did it used to work? If you tested the cable on another mac, did that give you an HDMI feed? Did you try a different HDMI device, like a TV? If so, looks like the mac. If you have or can borrow a VGA adapter to mini disp, check that out with another monitor, might indicate the functionality of the connector interface. That small connector, the male or female part, I suspect can get flaky. Could still be a partially flaky adapter. The key is, there is no set up to worry about anywhere on the mac, from OSX 6 to OSX10 that I'm aware of. It just works....or not. When I took my rig to the Genius bar, they couldn't find an adapter or another mac that would interface with HDMI. Until they took a new adapter out of the box. Mine still works, but boy am I careful when I plug that sucker in!

Yes, it has worked for a long time with a projector. It still works with minidisplayport-displayport with my external monitor. So the port does not work when used with mini displayport - HDMI cable.. I don't have any adapters, bought cables on Ebay that have HDMI and displayport on ends without any adapters.

HDMI cable worked perfectly with another Mac with the same cable and with desktop computer via HDMI-HDMI cable. So irritating!

It'd be great if someone could move all the SUCCESSFUL FIXES/SOLVED posts to a new topic, so that people facing the problem, like me, can try them out one after another. This is a massive discussion, and i have been reading through the posts. I'm being selfish? My eyes have strained but still could not get my monitor to work. It worked perfectly for about 2 weeks when I bought the monitor. But about a week back, it stopped working all of a sudden. It's been NO SIGNAL since. Monitor works perfectly with HDMI connected to the DVD player. I use a DIRECT MDP to HDMI cable. Then I bought a MDP to HMDI adapter and connected the monitor's HDMI cable. Tested both the cables on a friend's LED TV connected to my MBP. Doesn't work. I have tried almost all the fixes. Today, I have ordered a MDP to VGA adapter as well. Will try that too. This would be my final attempt, my monitor doesn't have a DVI port 😟. Else my brand new monitor will be gathering dust. Mine is a MBP 13" (Early 2011) + Aoc 23" 3D LED Monitor + Direct Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable + DisplayPort to HDMI adapter.

Rotten APPLES 🙂

Hey guys! Try this one. I have mbp early 2008 and samsung LCDTV 32" , also Bluerigger DVI to HDMI wire from Amazon. How it works? Plug the DVI to your laptop and HDMI to TV in HDMI2. You will see the milkyway sreen saver. On your MBP go to SETTINGS then Display and adjust the resolution and also you will see the samsung tv resolution display settings too, then adjust it from lower to higher resolution depending on how it work in both screen. As you click the display from settings of your laptop the samsumg display settings will pop up too, but incase the samsung TV display settings won't come out, will i can't help with that anymore. So good luck! hope will work for some people.

So in reading many posts, it seems like many of us are experiencing the same issue of our laptop not showing an image on our TV screen. For those of you experiencing this issue, the highly possible solution needed is to make sure you are "mirroring" your laptop to your tv screen.

1. Click on the Apple Icon (Top Left Corner of the screen)

2. Go to "System Preference"

3. Under the Hardware Section, click on "Displays"

4. This will bring up various resolution settings and at the top 3 tabs/options to choose from "Display/Arrangement/Color"

5. Click on "Arrangement"

6. Within this window at the lower left hand corner of the screen click the option "Mirror Display"

This should do the trick. I am running on a Mac OS 10.6.8 so the steps may be slightly different, but the main thing is to make sure you "mirror" your laptop with your tv. Hope this helps guys!
