NETserver, mDNSResponder, syslogd using up large processing power, why?

Hello,

For the past few weeks I've noticed about 150% processing power being used by three processes continuously. They are NETserver, mDNSResponder, and syslogd. They are using only 2 to 3 Mb of memory each but they keep the machine running hot and the fans going louder. I have rebooted and they go away for a while but then soon start up again. I did not notice this when I was running 10.6 and it seems to have started soon after I upgraded to 10.6.1. I have an 8 core Mac Pro.

I read somewhere that Back to my Mac may be a culprit. I've rebooted the machine after turning that off to no avail.

Any other advice? Anyone else having this problem.

Thanks.

Mac Pro 2.8 GHz 8 core, Mac OS X (10.6.1)

I'm seeing a similar problem -- but I don't have Back to my Mac and I don't have MobileMe.
I've gotten up a couple of mornings in the last week and found my fans running and NETserver running at 70% on both processors.

Looking at the system log, I'm seeing an ongoing series of error messages that suggest snapzpro is the culprit:

10/5/09 5:18:57 AM [0x0-0x15015].com.ambrosiasw.snapz[243] Mon Oct 5 05:18:57 chuckbos-macbook-pro.local Snapz Pro X[243] <Error>: kCGErrorInvalidOperation: _CGSFindSharedWindow: WID 2819

But even after shutting down SnapzPro, NETserver continues to keep running at 70%.

I'm having the same problem. The NETserver process is consuming 70% of my CPU and has been for hours. This is a new development since, I think, I installed the latest patch to snow leopard. For what it's worth, I killed the Netserver process yesterday (via Activity Monitor), and the system continued to work normally. Still, it's annoying.

I see that the process is owned by my user id - not root. So it is likely being launched by something I'm doing, though I don't know what that might be. However, I suspect it could be related to my Brother printer (MFC-490CW). It's a wireless printer/scanner, etc, and my Mac needs to listen for inbound connections from the scanner. I notice this problem seems to occur a few hours after I scan something.

Of course, I could be completely wrong.

LOGINserver was added to my login items (for all users) when I installed the printer ControlCenter. It's in the directory with NETserver. its library/printers/brother/utilities/server. I removed it as a login item. Probably will not be able to do the scan button thing but it may have to be that way until Brother updates the buggy software. When I kill netserver the other 2 quiet down immediately.

NETserver is brother software.

Yo! I was having this problem and stumbled onto this forum. I looked around the web in all places and found no answers. So I was reading one of my favorite blogs and stumbled across a cool new app, "Appfresh". ( http://metaquark.de/appfresh/ ) It updates all of your 3rd party software applications , plugins, and more.

Point is... I ran this and updated all of my apps, it shows you things you don't remember you even had installed and updates them. Restarted my computer, and BANG! The problem was solved! To see if this would fix the same problem on a different computer I ran Appfresh on my wife's computer. Again, success!

Give it a try, it worked for me.

Hi all,
I work over at Brothers customer support line for the Mac department, I recently got a call regarding the netserver problem. I don't code anything nor do I do any work on the software itself, just general tech support. I can tell you guys that the netserver app is located in hd>library>printers>brother>utilities>server and that its used for network scanning.

Try adding the netserver application to the firewall, that worked for the last person that I spoke with on this issue.

I also had the issue escalated to our software engineers for research.. though I cannot relay what information they find or anything, I don't have much contact with them.
