NETserver, mDNSResponder, syslogd using up large processing power, why?

Hello,

For the past few weeks I've noticed about 150% processing power being used by three processes continuously. They are NETserver, mDNSResponder, and syslogd. They are using only 2 to 3 Mb of memory each but they keep the machine running hot and the fans going louder. I have rebooted and they go away for a while but then soon start up again. I did not notice this when I was running 10.6 and it seems to have started soon after I upgraded to 10.6.1. I have an 8 core Mac Pro.

I read somewhere that Back to my Mac may be a culprit. I've rebooted the machine after turning that off to no avail.

Any other advice? Anyone else having this problem.

Thanks.

Mac Pro 2.8 GHz 8 core, Mac OS X (10.6.1)

Hi,

Just came across this thread - been having the same problems for ages with fans running constantly and CPU temp of 82plus. Oh yes, and I have a Brother DCP-6690CW...

I'd like to try killing the NETserver app and zipping it as mentioned in several previous replies - could some kind soul please tell me how to do this. I've tried a spotlight search for 'NETserver' and can't find it - where's it all kept? Not very experienced at messing around 'off piste' like this.

Any help much appreciated - thanks.

OK I've just had the same problem with a Brother MDC9010. There were actually two problems.

One, the power in the clients office had gone off and when it came back up, the only PC there, a crappy Windoze 2003 server, couldn't print.

Two, one of the users Mac had all fans going on full with Activity Monitor showing 65+% CPU use, with NETServer (part of the Brother suite of software) as the offender.

I realised the two were related because it transpired the PC couldn't print because the IP address of the printer (which was set on DHCP) had changed and the stupid Windows software couldn't see it. I fixed the IP address of the printer and adjusted in on the PC.

On the Mac I killed the NETServer process, using Activity Monitor, and trashed the application which lives here:
HD/ Library/Printers/Brother/Utilities/Server

I reckon the NETServer app (on the Mac) has bound to the original IP address (like the PC) and is desperately trying to find it on the network, can't find it and just keeps polling. It's probably possible to locate the NETServer preferences somewhere, delete and start again. Or it should be possible to set up the network access from the printer again as it will have to locate each user's computer and tell it what IP address to use.

Well, it's now over a year since the first post on this thread and the NETServer problem has still not been fixed, I bought a DCP-585CW a couple of months ago because it had wireless, and I wanted to have a scanner/copier that could stay in a different room in my apartment, (this one is certainly not the most stunningly beautiful or petite piece of kit, but that would not be a problem if I didn't have to keep it in my bedroom next to my computer), but I can't do that at the moment because it is not possible to scan from the machine to my MacBook Pro, and I do a lot of scanning so this is a big deal for me.

Oh well, Brother obviously don't really care about this problem, or about selling third rate products to people. I won't be buying any of their products again.

So to clarify, earlier I had the Brother machine connected wirelessly to my Linksys router, scanning using TWAIN import within Photoshop and other apps was fine, NETServer didn't even need to be running to do that, but to scan using the buttons on the machine to my computer it did, and this is where I experienced the same problems as everyone else, first a 'check connection' error message on the printer screen appeared, then (if left to it's own devices) the CPU would start being consumed by the NETServer app.

So as a 'shortcut', I created an Alias of the app and kept it on my Desktop, whenever I wanted to scan from the printer to computer I would just need to quit the app in Activity Monitor (if it had previously been running) and then relaunch it, but that was hardly a fix, just a quick way to refresh the connection.
Now the printer has a wired (ethernet) connection to my router, NETServer has been running for the last two hours, there is no excessive CPU consumption and there is no 'check connection' message on the printer screen. So the problem is obviously limited to wireless.
I just thought i'd document this in case anyone can help with my particular problem.

I have a Brother MFC 490CW and had this exact same problem. Stumbled across this thread. I am running latest OS (10.6.6 as of February 2nd, 2011). I downloaded the latest Brother CUPS Drivers from Apple ( http://support.apple.com/kb/DL894) that came out in January 2011. Also running an updated version of ControlCenter and the new firmware patch (Latest firmware version: H Release Date: 01/27/2011) that came out a couple of weeks ago or so.

Still having this problem randomly. Haven't tried killing the NETserver app but I presume that will work. Haven't played with the firewall or route tables yet. Just posting to let everyone (particularly Brother) know that the latest versions of their software still have this problem even if you have patched to the latest and greatest. Annoying that it seems to commonly known and yet they haven't fixed it yet.
