Hey Guys-
I am a photographer designing a new site to showcase my work. I want to make sure people with smaller displays can see the whole page/photo. I feel like 800 is too small... 980 is too big. Now I feel like Little Red Riding Hood lol.

I think it was Alanctio who posted the below a while back... is 980 wide really the best way to go or can I go smaller? Should I not worry so much about people looking at sites on iphones yet?

[Gary ~ Apple's own design award-winning site at apple.com mostly has a width of 980 pixels. Apple's developer guidelines for the iPhone/iPod touch say: "Safari on iPhone also sets the viewport width to 980 pixels, the width of most webpages." And: "...if your webpage is less than 980 pixels wide causing it to scale too small on iPhone..."]

thanks, Lisa

I settle for 1024 because I look at my Google analytics results and found out that about 75% of the people coming to my site had a resolution on their screen of 1024 or higher.

Regarding IPhone (I do not owe one) but for Ipod Touch my page get resize to fit my screen so the 980 resolution (or whatever Apple recommend) is ok.

Lisa:

Many 13" laptops support a 1280 pixel width so 980 wouldn't be crowding it that much. I don't know how many serious viewers will be using an iPhone for that type of browsers. Since I don't have an iPhone I don't have a feel as to how well it performs for that type of viewing. Apple uses 980 to facilitate iPhone use.

Don't PCs automatically fill the screen with the browser's window? So going to 980 wouldn't be much of an issue. (I don't know this as I've been blessed as never had to use a PC, ever. 🙂 Well once in Europe to check my mail at the hotel).

LOL OT-
My father had a 'Lisa' in the early 80s. LisaPaint, LisaGraph, LisaWrite and a couple of other programs I can't remember.. maybe LisaDraw which would have been vector-based like Illustrator? I remember designing the program for "**** Yankees" for the high school drama club on that computer 🙂 5 1/4 inch floppies. That is what I learned on and then I went to art school in NYC. Macs all the way and I've owned probably 7 or more over the years 🙂

OK so 980 as long as I don't make the height too long I should be ok. thanks!
