iPhone firmware update 3.1.2 is out! How's it working for you?

Whew relief at last! but 'your mileage may vary'. I am very curious how well it's working. I really hope 'comatose' is a word we can quickly forget.

I was at 3.1 last night and had hopefully my last coma ever. I put on 3.1.2 and it went very smoothly other than for some reason some of my apps lost their data. (i lost hundreds of entries from my 'Lose-it' weight management program (AWESOME by the way; down almost 20# since July).

Since putting on 3.1.2, however, phone not quite as responsive as yesterday on 3.1 (something i can deal with if it never 'goes coma' again), but once in a while it's a pretty long pause, like a 4 sec. pause in the middle of a tapping a word; again if it's a trade-off to have the phone work 100% of the time i can cope with that.

Anybody that does try the upgrade and has a problem, please go through the normal steps of putting on a clean install before 'going ballistic'. Basically, i would recommend doing a backup, putting the phone into DFU BEFORE the first attempt of 3.1.2 (which i didn't do... could be related to the 'stutters' i'm getting right now).

I recommend this method:

1. backup your phone manually (in case it doesn't ask) -> right-click on phone and pick backup
2. Get your phone into DFU mode (search apple help or google; you-tube is has great guides)
3. restore the phone while in DFU. In my experience, the phone is dark while DFU restore
4. activate the phone and 'play around a bit'; i use m.me so i can have my contacts back w/o sync
5. if things are not going well, i would go back to step 2 and re-install
6. test drive for at least a few hours before doing a 1-hr restore from backup (of your data).
7. come back here and give some feedback if it's working (or not).

So.. for me, the summary is: super-smooth 'restore' to 3.1.2 but like a 'moron' (don't take offense, it's a term of endearment for a smart person that doesn't do something the best way by being hasty).. i did just a direct upgrade from iTunes w/o heeding my own advice and DFU the phone first.

So.. i have had a couple instances of 'non response' to things like hitting the home button, the sleep button, but i've had that since 3.0; it was why i upgraded to 3.1 in the first place. I'm very curious about why my 'accidental' install of 3.1 was so darn fast, and i want it back, so over the weekend i'll do a DFU re-install of 3.1.2 if it doesn't clear up with a restart.

No coma yet, but too soon to know if 3.1.2 is the reason. If you have a perfectly working phone at 3.0 or 3.01, i wouldn't bother upgrading, the only 'super cool' thing you'll be missing is the ability to sort your home pages icons in iTunes (super amazing; best part of 3.1 OS for sure). Just wait a week or three to see what others say first!

Oh.. if you really want a clean install.. use a fresh 'user' on your computer to do the update, then just don't bother syncing, and switch back to 'you' before doing 'restore from backup'.

Ok, wish you guys all luck, hope that everybody has a fully operational phone/ipod after this.

Happy for you.

I did a complete restore today. Result: my iPhone worked normal for approx 15 minutes. Then I turned WiFi on, put my iPhone to sleep after a while, and it did not wake up by pressing the home button. The coma problem was back.

Seems to me the coma problem is related to WiFi. Turning WiFi off does not remove the coma problem.

I am going to wait for the next update (3.1.3?). Anyway, no more restores, I am tired of it.

Apple please... I am so unhappy my favorite device is so sleepy.

This OS killed my email. I have messages but cannot read or delete them, any moving amoungst multiple accounts or attempting to erase or open email on the displayed account causes the email program to abort to main screen. Thanks Apple. Of course out of warranty so cannot get any help from Apple either.

Ziatron,

you state: "not too hard to go back to 3.01".

In iTunes, under Devices I right click on Iphone and get the following message: Choose a backup to restore. This will restore only the contacts, calendars, ...., NOT the iPhone firmware".

Can you advice me what I need to do to get back to 3.01, which worked fine for me, while 3.1.2 is very "sluggish", i.e. it sometimes takes 10-20 seconds before the slider or the home button reacts.
Thanks in advance!!!

My 3G with 3.1.2 is still sluggish. Wake from sleep takes approx. 20 seconds. It appears, that it is waiting for wifi to activate. If I turn off the device, I am symptom free for some time afterwords... but then the sluggishness comes back.

I have no diference from 3.1, same slug.

So: I cant take pictures instantly, have to wait about 20 seconds before i can wake the phone. Sometimes I cant activate the slider on an incoming call.... etc.

Please please please Apple.... its been so long now, im seriously considering other devices.

I think many of these problems folks are talking about actually started with 3.0
Some 3GS folks are seeing some of the same crap that 3G users are seeing. It is the firmware, without a doubt, with some of the phones. With each update, these annoyances just get enhanced. I can tell you that with 3.01 I am seeing this issue you speak of where the phone rings and I can't "slide" to open the main screen. Everything just freezes for a period of time then works again.

Unfortunately I am locked in to a 24 month contract and starting to regret it. The battery life seems to be getting poorer with each firmware upgrade even although I class myself as a light user. Periodically check email manually, odd map usage and occasional camera use and it usually needs charged each day. Not great in my eyes. Really wish they could get to the bottom of this because I really like the interface of the phone and enjoy using it most of the time.

In August, I dumped Verizon for the iPhone. During the month of August (my 30 day trial period), I had virtually no network or call issues with my new iPhone and ATT. Then came the fiasco called 3.1 and MMS rollout. I was one of the people that suffered from the coma problem (iPhone basically lost all connectivity to the network, essentially rendering it an iPod touch). Happily, 3.1.2 solved the coma problem for my phone.

However, since the MMS rollout and 3.1.x, my phone won't stay connected to the 3g network (I'm in Washington DC). Many times during the day, it bounces to Edge. I'm so frustrated right now, I truly regretting my decision coming to ATT. What good is being able to surf the web and have lots of great apps, if I'm connected to Edge?!? It is unusably slow! As I say, I did not experience this problem during my 30 day trial period (which happened to be 30 days before 3.1 and MMS). I had solid 3G signal at all times. If I had these problems then, I most definately would have returned my iPhone and cancelled with ATT. Now I'm stuck with crappy service and I'm not happy. Especially when I read about the blazing fast surfing speed the Droid is getting on Verizon!!! It's salt on the wound!!!

After connecting my phone to my netbook last week and being prompted to upgrade to 3.1.2 my phone now has NO gps at all!!! I did the resets, installs again and every other tweak I could nut nothing worked, I never had a single issue untill the upgrade!! So went to apple who gave me a new phone which was already on 3.1.2 all worked fine until I connected to iTunes. Installed my back up from old phone and guess what NO gps again!!! So. Went back to apple who again gave me a new phone. All again ok, this time to be safe I wiped my pc then bought and ran new virus software to be safe, all clear and ok. So I proceeded to install iTunes and I connected and registered my phone!! Guess what suddenly NO bloody gps again. By now I don't know what else to do that may be causing this, so went back again to apple.. Yet again they gave me a mew phone but they said they have no idea what's goin on and seen no other issues!!! They must be blind or stupid!! Any way they suggested that I don't connecty phone to iTunes !! Ok that keeps my gps but what about my music vids and contacts and back up!!! Well for me 3.1.2 has been the biggest load of crap to happen to what was the best phone ever, not so sure now!!!
