iPhone firmware update 3.1.2 is out! How's it working for you?

Whew relief at last! but 'your mileage may vary'. I am very curious how well it's working. I really hope 'comatose' is a word we can quickly forget.

I was at 3.1 last night and had hopefully my last coma ever. I put on 3.1.2 and it went very smoothly other than for some reason some of my apps lost their data. (i lost hundreds of entries from my 'Lose-it' weight management program (AWESOME by the way; down almost 20# since July).

Since putting on 3.1.2, however, phone not quite as responsive as yesterday on 3.1 (something i can deal with if it never 'goes coma' again), but once in a while it's a pretty long pause, like a 4 sec. pause in the middle of a tapping a word; again if it's a trade-off to have the phone work 100% of the time i can cope with that.

Anybody that does try the upgrade and has a problem, please go through the normal steps of putting on a clean install before 'going ballistic'. Basically, i would recommend doing a backup, putting the phone into DFU BEFORE the first attempt of 3.1.2 (which i didn't do... could be related to the 'stutters' i'm getting right now).

I recommend this method:

1. backup your phone manually (in case it doesn't ask) -> right-click on phone and pick backup
2. Get your phone into DFU mode (search apple help or google; you-tube is has great guides)
3. restore the phone while in DFU. In my experience, the phone is dark while DFU restore
4. activate the phone and 'play around a bit'; i use m.me so i can have my contacts back w/o sync
5. if things are not going well, i would go back to step 2 and re-install
6. test drive for at least a few hours before doing a 1-hr restore from backup (of your data).
7. come back here and give some feedback if it's working (or not).

So.. for me, the summary is: super-smooth 'restore' to 3.1.2 but like a 'moron' (don't take offense, it's a term of endearment for a smart person that doesn't do something the best way by being hasty).. i did just a direct upgrade from iTunes w/o heeding my own advice and DFU the phone first.

So.. i have had a couple instances of 'non response' to things like hitting the home button, the sleep button, but i've had that since 3.0; it was why i upgraded to 3.1 in the first place. I'm very curious about why my 'accidental' install of 3.1 was so darn fast, and i want it back, so over the weekend i'll do a DFU re-install of 3.1.2 if it doesn't clear up with a restart.

No coma yet, but too soon to know if 3.1.2 is the reason. If you have a perfectly working phone at 3.0 or 3.01, i wouldn't bother upgrading, the only 'super cool' thing you'll be missing is the ability to sort your home pages icons in iTunes (super amazing; best part of 3.1 OS for sure). Just wait a week or three to see what others say first!

Oh.. if you really want a clean install.. use a fresh 'user' on your computer to do the update, then just don't bother syncing, and switch back to 'you' before doing 'restore from backup'.

Ok, wish you guys all luck, hope that everybody has a fully operational phone/ipod after this.

Many people have had success downgrading to 3.0 or 3.0.1, but nowhere have I found a clear, concise way of doing this. Would it be possible for someone who has successfully downgraded using a Mac to post the precise procedure THEY used. Most folks say that one can find such info on YouTube, etc. Well, I've found many procedures and all of them differ and some involve using the Terminal, others say that Apple no longer provide signatures for 3.0 and/or 3.0.1, others still use third part apps, etc etc

A clear, step-by-step mini-guide would be most helpful to us all. Many thanks in advance.

My experience with the update has been really good. I had moved my iTunes folder to my web sharing folder and then created a personal web site so I could use Safari on iPhone/iTouch to watch my movies without having to copy them onto the device first. With previous versions the video would sometimes stop playing. The update seems to have fixed this.

iPhone 3gs 16G
I updated from 3.0 to 3.1.2 last night. I have had one issue since. I was on a phone call on-hold and was filling in a web form on time warner support site using Safari. When I rotated the iPhone the web page went blank, just a gray screen. The Safari control bar began flashing on and off. I could exit Safari by pressing the home button. If I launched Safari again I just saw the gray screen.
I was able to make Safari work again by opening the map and searching for time warner, then I clicked the link and Safari displayed the time warner home page. If I went to tab mode in Safari the web site that crashed Safari displayed as a black box with a blue bar above it.. I closed the crashed web site.
I re-visited the site while I was not on a phone call and Safari worked perfectly.
I appeared that Safari was having a problem displaying the web site while on a phone call.
I have used Safari during phone calls with firmware 3.0 without any issues.

I made a web page where anybody who had or has the 'coma bug' can enter in every but of detail and get accounted for. It is extremely detailed and the only way to have any idea how many are affected.

in addition I made a couple web shortcuts to follow updates

http://forum.iPaperWeight.info is a page where you can post comments and has a video of my phone suffering from comabug.

http://video1.iPaperWeight.info is a direct link to YouTube of that video.

http://coma.iPaperWeight.info will give you a google search on the topic. The interesting thingis to run that search every couple of days to see the page count climb. When I first set up the search there we 12,000 pages. The next day almost 14,000 an last night, almost 21,000.

http://cnncoma.iPaperWeight.info will get one of the first decent news atricles.

http://iPaperWeight.info will get you the page where you can fill out your particular details so you can be "officially counted" as having been affected by the 3.1 bug.

_*SHUT DOWN ZONEALARM SECURITY SOFTWARE IF IT IS RUNNING DURING UPDATE*_

Just a heads up for anyone who is having problems updating their phone to the new software or is stuck in the RESTORE LOOP still...

A few weeks back I tried updating my 3G iPhone to the newer software (v3.1.0) and ended up with major problems just like everyone else. I read through the forums and tried all possible fixes and tricks, but with no luck. Apple replaced my iPhone a week ago when I went in totally frustrated, and barely asked me any questions. I hooked the new phone up and found there was an even newer software release that just came out, the v3.1.2 (my new phone came with v3.1.0 thankfully). I hesitated to update it, but eventually broke down and gave it a shot yesterday. What a surprise, the thing went right back into the same dang Restore Loop the last phone was in. I tried to restore 10 times with no luck, then uninstalled everything apple related from my computer and reinstalled the newest iTunes software. Once again, the dreaded restore loop...

Then I had a brilliant idea and decided to give it a shot. My computer knowledge is not what you would call expert, but I do consider myself "almost" there. This solution may sound idiotic, but this is what I did:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -
SOLUTION TO MY RESTORE LOOP ISSUES:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -

It was as simple as shutting my ZoneAlarm Security Suite down!!!

After ZoneAlarm was off, I restarted iTunes and did a normal restore (no DFU mode) and it loaded the new v3.1.2 firmware on my iPhone in 10 minutes! My phone now works and is no longer the world's most expensive paperweight.

I hope this information helps some of you out, and wish you best of luck with your updates!

Technical specs for those of you that are wondering:

ZoneAlarm Security Suite v8.0.400.020
with Anti-virus, Anti-spyware, and Anti-spam

TK.22

Cheers for that, all the other fixes did not work.

For the record original download was stated as corrupted and had to do a restore which would not go through. Several hours later and many tries at a restore I got there after switching off Zone Alarm.

Another half baked release from Apple to follow on from their many previous ones.

iPhone firmware update 3.1.2 is out! How's it working for you?
