My Macbook keeps disconnecting itself from the internet

Recently, I bought a Macbook Pro in September and ever since I got it, the connection with the internet have been weird. It keeps disconnecting itself from the internet. I know it's not my router or home internet because my Touch and other laptops have a consistent connection. The Airport icon has a full bar. I can reconnect, but I have to go to Network Diagnostics constantly to connect back to the internet, only to be disconnected 10 seconds later.

Out of desperation, I figured I do a clean install of Snow Leopard (why not since my Macbook is new anyways)! The problem is still there, the Macbook is updated to Version 10.6.1. Can someone help please? Is it my network settings? Is anyone else having this problem? Ahhhh

I bought my first MacBookPro Retina display in late May 2013. Disconnected randomly from the internet from day one. I have an Airport Extreme router and to that one I have two PCs, two iPhones and two iPads connected and working faultlessy. I spent hours on the phone with Apple Support, changing settings etc etc. Then took the MBP back to Apple more than a dozen times, but each time I would leave it there I would be told when I picked it up that there was nothing wrong with the machine. I also had trouble with the MacBook staying connected to my iPhone HotSpot feature and showed the Apple Store person that problem. At that time they blamed my phone (ignoring the home issue) and gave me a brand new phone. The same problem was replicated in front of the technician and with the NEW PHONE!.... The puzzling issue was that with the Apple Store WIFI the MacBook pro would not disconnect. Only with my home router, iPhone as a Hotspot and other wifi systems either in cafes, libratries or other. Gor the machine finally replaced with a brand new one (although mine was only a couple of months old). Would you believe THE SAME problem occurred? Finally after untold arguments, Apple has taken the machine back and given me a full refund. Now, (yes I know, sucker for punishment) I just purchased the latest MacBookPro with Retina display, as the salesperson assured me that the WIFI system in these latest machines has been improved. I am waiting to get it and shall post my findings. Wish me luck !

I found a solution for my dropped internet access which had to do with my Belkin router being set to "Auto" wireless channel. If there I some interference the router switches channels and this caused my macbook to become disconnected. Strangely not an issue with an ipad. Change your router settings to use a static channel (I ust picked channel 1".

Here are some more details:

I have found a solution to this for a Mac user in our corporate environment, who was having issues with his home network.

To test, I ran a ping using the network utilities. I connected the laptop to 2 networks that we had at the office. Most people have a "Home" and a "Guest" network. If you are connected to your "home" network, and have the "Guest" network above your "home" network in the prefferred network list, it will try to connect to the "guest" with the "Home" IP.

This will caust the network to "Time out" and will be a hick-up in your wireless signal. On the ping screen, you can actually see the time out as airport tries to connect to the preferred guest from the current connection.

To solve, just use one network or make sure that the network you connect to is also the top on your preferred list. I would also suggest removing "guest" networks if you do your work at home and have duel SSIDs.

To fix the WIFI problem, please proceed in these steps until is fixed.

  1. Check if you have problems with another router. Maybe at the library, at a Starbucks, etc. If you are not having problems, then it is probalby related with your router.
  2. Reseting the PROM ( http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379 ) and SMC ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 ). If does not work try the next one.
  3. Reset WIFI config: http://osxdaily.com/2012/11/30/resolving-stubborn-wi-fi-connection-problems-in-m ac-os-x/
  4. The airport card may be not properly connected. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsSIUs7jzQc
  5. The airport card may need to be replaced. Check https://www.google.com/search?q=macbook+pro+airport+card to find a replacement. Make sure that it is the model for your laptop. Find here the instructions how to do it: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=replace+airport

Note: In steps 3 and 4 you are dealing with hardware problems. An alternative to them is to bring the computer to the Apple Store. These steps can ruin your laptops if you are not good with working with circuits boards. A new airport card is less than the $100 that Apple would ask you but if you break your laptop you have a more than $1,000 loss. Attempt these steps at your own risk.

Just recently had that dropped wifi issue every 20 to 25 minutes and it's not only my mac but also everything else connected to my router wirelessly. I knew this happenned just after I enabled the upnp on the router and the router had to reboot itself. I was trying to fix a problem with port forwarding on my router but instead I got that issue. So all I had to do was go back to my router and disabled the upnp again and after the router rebooted, I was back to normal again, I think my router was doing that for security reasons after I enabled upnp. So I think it's not always the mac but the router or modem or whatever you are connecting to.

Hope this helps someone with a similar issue.

Issue:

Experiencing what seemed to be random disconnects from the internet while playing games like Diablo, League of Legends, etc. about every 15mins. The interruption would seem to last for around 5 seconds, then resume regular connection.

System Info:

Purchased in March of 2016, 27inch 5k iMac with SSD. Using Airport Extreme as a router. Connected with both Wifi and Ethernet Cable.

Trouble Shooting:

- Tried resetting the airport itself. (unplugged, plug back in)

- Removed and added Airport and Ethernet options in system preferences.

- Plugged airport into a different ethernet port. (just to ensure it wasn't a wiring problem with current port)

- Deleted network .plist files.

- Tried other suggestions in this thread resting DNS, DHCP with manual addresses, etc.

- Restarting the computer.

Nothing seemed to help this interruption in connectivity, or what seemed like a connectivity issue.

Solution:

- Set the Computer & Display sleep to Never, under energy saver in system preferences.

By default the computer is set to have the display turn off after 15mins. After some consideration of what could be the issue I thought, might as well try adjusting the sleep settings and just see what happens. After setting the sleep to Never I haven't experienced this issue since. I can only assume that while I was playing a game after 15mins, the OS was checking to see if it should go to sleep, attempting to sleep and causing the interruption for around 5 seconds.

While it seems illogical that this could be the cause due to mouse & keyboard use, and an application running, it was the only thing that helped me with this issue. I hope this helps someone.
