Whenever i plug something into the headphone jack, it doesnt sense anything in there and continues to play noise through the internal speakers in my laptop? Is my jack broken? I fiddle with it for like 5 minutes and still got nothing. How do i fix this?

The only way i can get them to work is if i shut off my macbook then plug speakers or headphones in the jack before i turn my macbook back on

I can verify this problem as well on a Mid 2009 MacBook Pro.
I also have this problem (MB Pro, Jul. 2009, Snow Leopard 10.6.2)
Very annoying...

I am also getting the same problem, June 2009 MBP and Snow Leopard 10.6.2 its pretty annoying.
I have experienced the same problem, but it was a while ago. The problem disappeared as I restarted my computer. Have you experienced this problem in the same way, that it works after restart?

Yes, I experienced that rebooting helps. But the problem returns after a time and I don't like rebooting. Putting the machine to sleep aand back helps, too, but I do not like being forced to do so, too.

Me too, I have a 13" MacBook Pro using OS X 10.6.2 (bought Sept 09) and it won't recognize the head phones. It is intermittent but very annoying! I usually put it to sleep and it sorts itself out when woken.
Same problem here, my MBP recognizes only the apple headphone. I've tried to use external speakers and others headphones, none of them worked. Any thoughts?
I am having the exact same problem on my machine below.
happening here too, though it has never done it before today. Sometimes it won't detect when I plug my desk speakers in and I have to unplug and plug them back in, but tonight that isn't working.
If I sleep and wake to get it to play through my headphones, and then unplug said headphones, it does go back to the built-in speaker, but then plugging the headphone in doesn't switch back.
I hope it's just a software thing

My headphone jack didn't work at all. I took it back to the shop and they replaced it because there was something obviously wrong. BUT, the replacement only works sometimes. This really is unacceptable. I spent $2000 and have to take the comp to the shop again! Its been in the shop longer than in my house.
I have the same problem, my McBook5,1 (2009) always worked fine, also with a tulip plug for external speakers or headphones. Since yesterday it doesn't recognize either of them.
*In my case, restarting or going to sleep function does not solve the problem.*
It must be a software problem, because it started after I used Skype with external speakers.
Is there already a solution?

This problem showed up for me right after the snow leopard upgrade. Speakers (Logitech) were working fine before the upgrade. I did a restart, still does not show?
Headphone jack doesnt recognize headphones or external speakers
