Swollen warped battery?!

Hey,

As most macbook pro owners, my lid has warped on the left hand side upwards, but now suddenly my battery popped out of it's shell.

It has just seemed to swell and burst out so that the laptop doesn't sit flat anymore. I have had to take the battery out, and just plug the laptop in and use it like that.

What should I do? A brand new one is £97.00 which is just completely out of line, I paid for a £1600 laptop, and all this warping and swelling happens, and they expect me to pay for a new battery at £97.00?!

I paid for a £1600 laptop

Well, for that amount did you bother to purchase AppleCare? Give them a call if you did or take your computer to an Apple Store. The staff will be able to check to determine if your model MacBook Pro qualifies for a free battery.

As *most macbook pro owners*, my lid has warped on the left hand side upwards,

My nearly 2 year old Macbook Pro lid is not warped! Nor any other part of my computer.

I called them and they said they would replace the battery for free, and fix my display issue (They fixed it before, but didn't replace it correctly or something, and there is a bright patch on the screen)

Also, you can go on google and find the exact same lid warp in thousands of macbook pro owners. The heat from the MBP has been known to be excessive for a long time. It is what caused my old 15" to break down (And why Apple gave me this 17" for free)

I have the 3yr apple care thing so.

They said it was covered under their "battery replacement scheme"

I got to the store, and he said there was nothing written in the case notes saying it was covered! He didn't even want to see the separates case ID Applecare gave me for the battery! he said that "expansion was normal" HAH, my battery had pretty much burst out of the plastic casing, and you could see inside the bag and all of the insides of the battery, it was making the laptop raise at least an inch or two off the desk!

The employee at the Liverpool One Apple store was quite rude. I had another issue a few months back with the logic board, when it came back there was a big white blob on the screen where they obviously has damaged it in repair, so i was also getting that fixed this time. He said you could "barely notice it, just looks like the background" and when I pulled him up on this, saying that for a £1500 machine, it isn't a small thing, he suddenly said "oh, what I meant was i can tell it wasn't accidentally done by you........." yeah right.

Anyway, the lid had also warped on the left hand side upwards due to the terrible design of the catch being in the middle, so I am getting a new battery, and a new clamshell (Screen + Lid) so those issues will be gone.

What also annoyed me was that he obviously noticed that the WSAD keys had rubbed away a bit, the silver paint was wearing down (Purchased sept 2007!) and he didn't offer to swap them out, when I called applecare they said that he should have some spare keys in store, which they would give me for free to swap out the worn keys.....he did not mention this at all in store.

The Apple store in Manchester could not have been better, they made me become a loyal Apple customer, but the store in Liverpool was terrible service.

He also seemed to be very suspicious of how I got 10.5.8 on my machine, sayi8ng that it WOULD have come with tiger, and did I purchase the upgrade and all these questions, obviously thinking I had downloaded it illegally, where as in fact I was given a FREE upgrade by the MANCHESTER STORE.

They said it will take "7-14 days" which I find amazing. To order, and replace a battery, and clamshell it seems like a long waiting time. The apple store in Manchester had my logicboard replaced & done within the week.

If you do not have applecare, you SHOULD call them, and say what happened. For two years worth of use this is NOT normal and especially the early 17" MBPs are well known for this problem. I wouldn't doubt that if you kept at it, you could get it replaced on them.

An update on my swollen battery...I was travelling to the US and went into an Applestore in West town mall, Madison, Wisconsin and the people there were amazing...I showed them the battery, and without really asking they just replaced it (it was 2 years old, no Apple care)....Hats off to the apple team for excellent customer service!! I must point out that I was also buying a mac-mini, touch & mac box set at the same time as asking for a free battery but they still did the business....Thanks to the team in the West town mall, Madison, WI

Had my battery plump up like a jiffy-pop pop corn pan last night. After see some good reactions after folks have taken thier problems directly to a store, I think I will try that tomorrow. Had I known of this issue before, I would have gladly replaced it earlier when the recall was still active. Way to keep up updated there Apple...I expect better from you, I really do.

I just discovered a warped, expanding battery today as well... It was in my 2006 MBP 17", well out of warranty (I did have AppleCare) and I've already had this battery replaced once.

But I have the fortune of living around Madison, WI and went over to see the fine folks at the Apple Store at West Towne and I can confirm the same experience... no questions, he just typed in my sn for paperwork and grabbed a new battery off the shelf and put it in for me.

Great and quick service. More importantly, they gave me a great customer experience. Not that I needed any reason to stay with Apple (I've had Apples since the ][+ in 1978)... but this just makes me smile.

And I wanted to share it with anyone else with this problem. Just schedule a Genius Bar visit and go in and talk to them. If it's visibly deforming the battery case they should replace it.

Just discovered the same issue with my 2006 17" MBP (no applecare). Quickly removed the battery before things got worse - the MBP itself doesn't appear to have suffered any further damage. The original battery that came with the unit was replaced already under the battery replacement scheme when it stopped charging back in 2008.

This battery actually stopped giving me warnings about running low (started a few weeks ago). The MBP would just switch off when the battery got to a certain point. Don't know if this relates to the swelling issue at all.

I will give the Sydney Apple Store a go during the week and see what they say. To be honest, I'm expecting that i'm going to have to pay for a new battery.

Just to add another for the record - 17" MBP, just over 2 years old, recently upgraded to Snow Leopard, swollen splitting battery. I don't live anywhere near an Apple store, so I rang up and was (politely and sympathetically) told I had to buy a new one. Interestingly they would have replaced the track pad if had been damaged by the swollen battery, but not the battery itself.

This has happened to mine... I'm worried because I purchased the laptop second hand from my friend, and from what I could tell I am not eligible for Apple Care. I don't know what to do about replacing the battery.

Does anyone know how I am covered when I own a second hand laptop?

I've taken such good care of it, as did it's previous owner who is a good friend of mine.

We've had the same response to the same problem (Snow Leopard, service battery messages, swolen battery, warped casing & pad etc.) from the distributer in New Zealand although in fairness they have offered a discount on a new battery which looks like an admission of guilt.

How helpful it would be if Apple Inc would PLEASE acknowledge that they have a problem with batteries and battery firmware in the Macbook Pro and announce a replacement programme before someone's machine self-destructs or worse.

It appears that some Apple Stores and distributers have taken it upon themselves to replace these batteries free of charge even if outside warranty, but in the US where customer service seems better understood.

Can someone from Apple please respond to these posts in some meaningful and helpful way or is this too much to ask?
