If you purchased your 160 GB iPod in 2008 you mostly likely have a 6th generation iPod classic. Apple had decided that the 1.1.2 firmware version would be the last for that model. So, iTunes is correct in reporting you have the most current up to date firmware and you will not be able to update any further. Sorry.

The only people who can update to the newer firmware are individuals with the 120 GB model, or the new 80 or 160 GB models that came out this past September. So as the time shows, both the Revised iPod Classic Models.

shame on Apple - also got an ipod 160gb. I bought it cause 120gb are way too small. Now apple re-publishes the exact same pods than two years ago.

I won't get fooled again. If apple says 1.1.2 is the last firmware version for my ipod, then this will be the last thing I'll ever buy from them.

Though it is the same capacity, it is not the same exact iPod as two years ago. Apple seems to have made the decision to stop manufacturing iPods with 2-platter hard drives (like the original 160GB). The new 160GB is the same thin form factor as the original 80GB and the 120GB models. I am sure there have been other hardware modifications (for better or worse) as well.

I'd have to say that you will likely be disappointed if you expect any new firmware for the original 160GB; there has not been a new firmware release in, I would say, over a year. If there are any updates, it will likely only be to address some egregious bug someone has discovered. Keep in mind that this is a device that has been out of manufacturing for over a year. I do not know of many hardware manufacturers that continue to distribute firmware updates after a product has ceased to be manufactured for over a year.

As far as not buying from Apple again, you can always buy a 160GB digital music player from ...?

...from Archos. I have a pc, I'm not forced to by anything compatible for mac. By the way, still no Rockbox support for the 6g, cause apple suxx.

B-rock, just a quick correction - the newest Classics (September '09) only come in one flavor, 160GB.
