firmware 2.0.3

Hi everyone.

I'm an happy owner of a 160gb iPod classic bought last may (2008).

I read that Apple release a new firmware (2.0.3) for iPod Classic that enables Genius in the iPod Classic.

I was really happy cause I love this feature and missed it a lot outside. So i open my iTunes 9 and connect my iPod. Verify updates but... it says:

"This iPod sw version (1.1.2) is the newest"
(I'm translating from italian, btw this is the sense)

But how!!! Tell me this is a problem of mine, or my iTunes or the net, tell me something!! How can I get that firware since it appear to be due to my iPod?

I was so happy thinkin I could have Genius.... sigh sigh
I really will appreciate your help, thank you all

Hello boheme,
And welcome to Apple Discussions!

If you purchased your 160 GB iPod in 2008 you mostly likely have a 6th generation iPod classic. Apple had decided that the 1.1.2 firmware version would be the last for that model. So, iTunes is correct in reporting you have the most current up to date firmware and you will not be able to update any further. Sorry.

Hope this helps.

Though it is the same capacity, it is not the same exact iPod as two years ago. Apple seems to have made the decision to stop manufacturing iPods with 2-platter hard drives (like the original 160GB). The new 160GB is the same thin form factor as the original 80GB and the 120GB models. I am sure there have been other hardware modifications (for better or worse) as well.

I'd have to say that you will likely be disappointed if you expect any new firmware for the original 160GB; there has not been a new firmware release in, I would say, over a year. If there are any updates, it will likely only be to address some egregious bug someone has discovered. Keep in mind that this is a device that has been out of manufacturing for over a year. I do not know of many hardware manufacturers that continue to distribute firmware updates after a product has ceased to be manufactured for over a year.

As far as not buying from Apple again, you can always buy a 160GB digital music player from ...?
