Menu Bar Icons disappear and reappear

I have recently updated both my Macbook Pro and iMac to Snow Leopard. The Macbook Pro went fine, but there are some funky things going on with the iMac.

When it first boots up, all of the menu icons appear on the right. Within seconds they all disappear except for iPsecuritas and the Virex Castle. Even the Spyglass disappears. Doesnt matter what I do they just dont come back until I reboot. I have tried going to preferences and looking at the Network screen to ensure that the tick for display status is there and ...no...is not. So I move my mouse towards it and...it appears as if by magic....but still no icon. So I untick it and try to apply....greyed out....doesnt matter what I do its always greyed out. And I am an Administrator on both machines

In addition, wow when I try and use a DVD to copy some photo's, every single disk is unreadable. Put them in the MacBook Pro and they all work.

Anyone else get these issues ?

I'm confused. Are you missing only few icons or the whole menu bar? If they are the icons only I have a similar problem. Randomly the icons of iStat menu disappear (and not only them). I fix it switching space.

Also for the DVD problem you may try to do a "repair permission" of the OSX partition in disk utility if you didn't do it before. Otherwise I'd suggest to make a backup of the iMac with SuperDuper (the trial let people do a full backup), reinstall SL (erasing the HDD!) and then migrate the accounts and applications with Migration Assistant.
