What I did was back up the files from the old G4 onto an external hard drive and then retrieved it to the new iMac. When I try to open AW files now I get it in html gobblygook because it cant find the original program. Obviously, Apple has abandoned AW compatibility with the latest OS, so I think I will abandon fooling with it anymore and find other software that can do what I want. Any recommendations?
Al,
Apple has declared EOL for AppleWorks, meaning they no longer sell or support it or supply it bundled with any current Mac. AppleWorks still works with every version of OS X to date, including Snow Leopard.
On your new iMac, Snow Leopard "can't find the original program" because you haven't installed AppleWorks on that machine. Move the whole AppleWorks folder from your old G4 into the Applications folder on your new iMac, and you will again be able to access those AppleWorks files. Snow Leopard will ask if you want to install Rosetta the first time you try to launch AppleWorks. Say yes.
As for 'other software that can do what you want,' recommendations would depend on what it is that you want to do. The iWork applications, Pages, Numbers and Keynote, can open AppleWorks 6 word processing, spreadsheet and presentation files respectively. Numbers, or Numbers in combination with Bento can handle some database tasks, but not as much as could be done with AppleWorks. Filemaker Pro can do much more, but also costs much more, both in dollars and in time spent learning. Neither, to the best of my knowledge can open existing AW database documents.
There's more on migrating from AppleWorks in a. brody's User Tip,
AppleWorks for the modern day, a migration tip.
