Appleworks & Snow Leopard

I bought a new intel based imac a few months ago. I installed Appleworks 6.2.9 using OS 10.5.8 & it works fine. I have read the other posts about using Appleworks with Snow Leopard & I am reluctant to intall Snow Leopard if it will cause issues with Appleworks. Has there been an official answer or support from Apple as to whether Appleworks will function with SL? I would rather have Appleworks than SL to be honest. I am very disappointed with iworks! Whereʻs the draw, paint & database???

24" imac, Mac OS X (10.5.8), Mac user since 1994

iWork has three programs. I mostly use Pages both for text and layout but nothing fancy. Number I use for opening excel pages from work and Keynote is used for personal travel presentations. I miss the database in AW but right now I don't use database much.

You could try iWork trial for 30 days. It does take a little while to get used to if you are set in the ways of AW.

No, it is not silly to ask. I have never liked MS Office. It have tons of feature which are hard to find. People are different and like different things. We aren't robots or clones.

I love AW but it doesn't look as good on the screen anymore, compared to iWork. I just hope that Apple would add a database like the one in AW. Graphic programs doesn't have to be included. There are so many different one can use

Hi Dale,
my eyes are now blurry after two days reading these discussions and 1.5 hours on the phone for AW6 help in Snow Leopard. I used Migration Asst. to transfer everything from my iBook with Tiger to my new iMac with Snow Leopard already installed. Upon opening AW6 from the dashboard, icon bounces twice and does nothing. I tried to individually open files created with old AW6 through Finder - nada. I then looked up in the discussion boards and tried:

- Appleworks 6 updater (unable to find international english blablabla)
- deleting Appleworks 6 preferences and .plist and running disk repair
- optionally installing Rosetta from OS X install DVD (that came with iMac)

nothing has worked. I believe I have located my old iBook install disks 1 & 2. I've read about reinstalling AW6 from this into my new iMac. Should I try this? and if I do, do I need to uninstall if from my iBook (as I've read somewhere?) I don't want to uninstall there bc I use the laptop occasionally. Do I need to delete anything else in my iMac to do this? OR should I try to re"install" by moving the AW6 folder from iBook to iMac like you've mentioned here?

I'm desparate and upset that, one, I was unaware Snow Leopard hasn't anything comparable to AW6/Word processing - TextEdit is more like Textidiot, and two, it's looking like I have to BUY iWork when there are folks saying AW6 is working fine on their 10.6.2 :o(

What I did was back up the files from the old G4 onto an external hard drive and then retrieved it to the new iMac. When I try to open AW files now I get it in html gobblygook because it cant find the original program. Obviously, Apple has abandoned AW compatibility with the latest OS, so I think I will abandon fooling with it anymore and find other software that can do what I want. Any recommendations?

Al,

Apple has declared EOL for AppleWorks, meaning they no longer sell or support it or supply it bundled with any current Mac. AppleWorks still works with every version of OS X to date, including Snow Leopard.

On your new iMac, Snow Leopard "can't find the original program" because you haven't installed AppleWorks on that machine. Move the whole AppleWorks folder from your old G4 into the Applications folder on your new iMac, and you will again be able to access those AppleWorks files. Snow Leopard will ask if you want to install Rosetta the first time you try to launch AppleWorks. Say yes.

As for 'other software that can do what you want,' recommendations would depend on what it is that you want to do. The iWork applications, Pages, Numbers and Keynote, can open AppleWorks 6 word processing, spreadsheet and presentation files respectively. Numbers, or Numbers in combination with Bento can handle some database tasks, but not as much as could be done with AppleWorks. Filemaker Pro can do much more, but also costs much more, both in dollars and in time spent learning. Neither, to the best of my knowledge can open existing AW database documents.

There's more on migrating from AppleWorks in a. brody's User Tip, AppleWorks for the modern day, a migration tip.

Many thanks for this post! It has been very reassuring.

Just to be absolutely sure, would you be kind enough to confirm that I'll be O.K. to upgrade to SL based on the following:

iMac Model 7.1
System: Mac OS X 10.5.8
Appleworks 6.2.9

Any particular precautions I need to take (other than full backup) before I act ? I note from one of your links that Rosetta is needed - I assume this is built into OS X 10.5.8. ?

I also note from the same link that there are some problems with iPhoto 8.1 in SL. Would I be wise to delay upgrading at this stage?

Thanks much for your help.

When you install Snow Leopard make sure you install Rosetta too. If you miss it you can do it later.
I always Repair permissions before and after a major installation. You can use the Disc Utility you have in the Utility folder or Onyx a third party application that is free.
When the installation is done upgrade to 10.6.2 by using the combo update, not the smaller update that Software update check uses. You will get a newer Hoefler font with the combo update.
Alway when updating it is vise to update any application that doesn't seem to work as it should- By now most apps have updates if needed.
iPhoto is now 8.1.1 and works fine on my computer. I really haven't had much problem from upgrading to SL from the start as I am aware that some applications might have issues at start.
