iMac Stand Height Solutions

So I need to raise the height of my iMac. Right now its sitting on an old drive (I knew it would be useful beyond its way-too-short first life as a drive.)

I am trying to raise the unit by three to five inches. I've looked at monitor risers and in general some seem to be up to the task but they're not particularly good looking.

So, has anyone stumbled on a graceful solution for an iMac? I'm looking for a a small footprint riser I think. I thought about going the VESA route (i.e., removing the OEM stand and getting a VESA adapter plate and then a new stand that is either adjustable or gets me to the height I am looking for, but the thought of all that effort made my head explode.)

Thanks in advance.

Good day, sir.

I use an i360, with allows the iMac to swivel, provides a more stable base, and adds about half an inch to height. Then I put the whole thing on top of a box (basically the same idea as your drive case).

You can probably find an old CRT display stand/riser. Maybe something like this

If it can hold a 17-inch CRT, a 24-inch iMac should not be a problem. I have an old one (not as fancy as the one above) that is collecting dust, but I'm thinking about putting my iMac with the i360 on it.

Kenichi,

Thanks for the link. I looked at the swivel and while it is definitely coolio, it is a little bit overkill and lacks the grace I am seeking. (Yes I know, that sounds...um, shallow? What can I tell you? This is for my home office and unlike other environs, I have total control over it and want it "perfect".

Here's the best one I've found so far. http://www.allsop.com/monitor-stands/cupertino-monitor-stand/

I don't love it. I wish it were stainless. And I wish the footprint was much smaller. But it is a start!

I said, good day sir!

That's fine and looks very nice. But it is basically a fancy version of your current "box." 🙂 I'm thinking of using my old CRT stand "arm" (it is actually for a smaller 15-inch CRT) because it is about the right size for the platform portion to fit the i360, and I will have uninterrupted open space below the iMac. And I can move the whole iMac side to side while it swivels on the i360. Now that you brought it up and have me thinking about it, I'll probably do it over this coming weekend.

Yes and kinda as a fancy version of my existing box. The "U" shaped design does allow storage under the stand. Well maybe not "storage" but if you have small army men, or perhaps miniature Pikachu action figures http://www.amazon.com/Pokemon-Action-Figure-Rocket-Pikachu/dp/B000JWU99Q you could stage tiny battles.

To quote U2, I still haven't found what I'm looking for.

Good day, sir!

Actually, I am hoping the two BackPacks I am throwing on the back of my iMac will help with some of my external hard drives and hub. 😉

From the BackPack pictures, ( http://www.twelvesouth.com/static/assets/products/productheaderimage/image/pack0 2_.jpg) one of them is definitely strong enough for a WD My Book 2TB. And then I'm thinking I can stack a couple smaller portable hard drives on the second BackPack.

That leaves one more WD My Book for the sidelines along with the hub.

So now I have to see if I can dig up some very short FW cables.

Meanwhile I still haven't found any stylin' support solution for my iMac.

I wonder if anyone has come out with an IT equivalent of army men... hackers sitting around alienware monitors breaking into banks for instance. Hmmmm...I smell new product!

Thought I'd throw in a totally different idea: I need to adjust the height of my iMac as well, but I prefer the large 24" to be lower than the keyboard, so here is what I'm considering:

It's not necessarily "cool", but it has some interesting features in that you can adjust the height of both independently.

Barbara,

Your option definitely has some advantages. Solves the height issue, with a truly customizable configuration. It won't work in my case. Mainly, I'm not ready to make a significant design change.

I will say after reading people responses to this thread and looking up and down and all around: I think Apple is a bit behind the eight ball on this issue. I find it surprising and out of character for Apple to put a product out that has no height adjustment. That seems so...Henry Ford and his Model T's. "You can have them in any color you want, as long as it is black.

Anyhow, hear me Apple! One size doesn't fit all!

Good day Sir. I said, Good day, Sir!

I have the opposite problem. My 24" iMac is too high to fit under the bookshelf in my office. I cannot adjust the bookshelf since it sits on the table. So I am looking for a stand that looks like the standard aluminum stand that comes with all iMacs. I need one that will lower the iMac about 1".

Has anyone heard of any custom iMac stands like this? I have looked at the articulated products, but I don't have any place to anchor one on the desk.

Iecube,

You've got a tough situation. Not surprisingly, I haven't seen any anchorless solutions. Is the desk an antique? Or does it belong to someone else who might get upset if you drilled a hole in it?

If you're near a wall, there are a bunch of solutions that would enable you to remove the iMac from the base, install an articulated solution on the wall allowing you to set your monitor height.

Its funny how your requirements, fundamentally the exact opposite of mine, are such a good reminder that the notion of "one size fits all" is so last century.

I suspect that by the time we get to OS !2, Apple will allow you to customize your iMac stand or have some better solution than it currently offers. (Not that I don't love Apple.)

I'll keep looking and let you know if I stumble on any other solutions.

I'm in the same situation. I'm 6'4 and I could use this thing up about 4". The only stuff I can find is like, Stand by Mi v2 which only raises it 2.3", and is $65. (has a usb hub on it) I wish I new a metal guy who could make me something like the old Plasticsmith Grand Stand out of brushes alum or steel. Basically I need a flattened u shape with strength to hold the imac, that's it.
