Iphone 3g stuck in recovery mode(error 14) after failed 3.2.1 update

My Iphone is stuck in recovery mode after it failed to update to operating system 3.2.1 . When I press restore in itunes, the process stops at around the 20% mark and come up with error 14. I have already manually deleted and redownloaded the update 4 times, reinstalled itunes twice and created a new user on my pc and downloaded and update through this new user and disabled all security but I still keep getting the same error message. My pc is only six months old. I successfully updated the phone to operating system 3.1 a few months ago with no problems. Has anyone found a way to fix this?? This is ridiculous!!

You need to make sure that ALL anti-virus, firewalls, ant-malware, etc., ARE DISABLED! Restart itunes & try again.
I know in your first post you say you did, are you sure?
You also state that you've reinstalled itunes, when you removed itunes, did you remove all the components in the following order?

Did you use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order:

1. iTunes
2. QuickTime
3. Apple Software Update
4. Apple Mobile Device Support
5. Bonjour
6. Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)

Important: Do not restart your computer between the steps lised above, only restart once you have completed ALL THE STEPS IN THE ORDER LISTED!

This is the only way to make sure you've uninstalled itunes completely:

1. Restart your computer.
2. After the computer restarts, open Local Disk (C:) located in Computer or whichever hard disk your programs are installed on.
3. Open the Program Files folder.
4. Right-click the iTunes folder, choose Delete, and choose Yes when asked to confirm the deletion. Note: This folder may have already been deleted if iTunes was successfully removed.
5. Right-click the iPod folder, choose Delete, and choose Yes when asked to confirm the deletion. Click Continue if Windows needs confirmation or permission to continue.
6. Right-click the QuickTime folder (if it exists), choose Delete, and choose Yes when asked to confirm the deletion. Click Continue if Windows needs confirmation or permission to continue.
7. Right-click the Bonjour folder (if it exists), choose Delete, and choose Yes when asked to confirm the deletion. Click Continue if Windows needs confirmation or permission to continue.
8. Open the Common Files folder.
9. Right-click the Apple folder (if it exists), choose Delete, and choose Yes when asked to confirm the deletion. Click Continue if Windows needs confirmation or permission to continue.
10. Open Local Disk (C:) located in Computer or whichever hard disk your operating system is installed on.
11. Open the Windows folder.
12. Open the System32 folder.
13. Right-click the QuickTime file (if it exists), choose Delete, and choose Yes when asked to confirm the deletion. Click Continue if Windows needs confirmation or permission to continue.
14. Right-click the QuickTimeVR file (if it exists), choose Delete, and choose Yes when asked to confirm the deletion. Click Continue if Windows needs confirmation or permission to continue.
15. Right-click the Recycle Bin and choose Empty Recycle Bin.

i have mcafee and I went through every function and turned them all off now when i open it up it has a list components that are turned off, I just checked that it is all of them and it appears that it is.

I am pretty sure that i uninstalled the itunes components in order apart from the quicktime which i think I did second last. I hope that isn't the reason for the continued errors.

Follow the instructions in my two posts above, I know it seems like alot of work, but this is the only way to properly uninstall itunes. Most likely, some security software, ant-virus, etc., stopped itunes from connecting with apple's servers. Apple now "signs" all firmware updates & thus itunes has to be able to contact apple's servers or it won't update you're phone. By removing all traces of itunes, we start fresh. I can't stress enough how important it is to MAKE SURE! that no ant-virus, built in firewalls, malware programs, etc are running when you do this!

I had this same problem and tried for hours. Even reloaded Itunes. Finally took the phone to the Apple shop and the guy there hooked it up to Itunes in the shop and it worked instantly! The difference is he was using a Mac computer! he said there is a lot of problems with IPhones freezing on Windows. My phone is completely restored now!!!!

Well .... after going through this for days and having Apple say that I have to purchase a new phone.
I decided to try everything. I switched the simcard from my other iphone and still got error 13 and it just went back to the sim is locked or missing after the "restore needed" no matter what I tried and I tried everything but jailbreak. So I decided to look in my USB devices and see if it showed up there. Well maybe this will help you , as I went looking suddenly it brought up the itunes dialog, serial # and phone number and began the registration process... however it now wanted a backup encryption password. So I have to talk to the Apple store again to see what they did during the initial setup... I didn't put in a password.
But after a full charge and a search for USB devices it suddenly recognized the phone so that is progress. I hope this helps someone.
