21.5'' iMac - Screen Noise

I just bought and received a new 21.5'' iMac and love it but the screen is making a high pitched noise, similar to a dog whistle. It's that sound that isn't loud but pierces through your brain. And the brighter the backlight is, the louder is gets.

What do you guys think? I love this machine but I don't think it should be doing this and it bothers the heck out of me. Maybe a call to Apple is in order?

derbystar.
What week was your imac made in? To find this, check your serial number (click on about this mac, and then click on 'version' twice). The week it is made is the fourth and fifth number of the serial number. My replacement is from the 43rd week and still squeals. I am glad to hear you got a good one - and that brings hope to the rest of us!

derbystar16, maybe they were using old parts one week and got new ones the next. Anyway, I am hoping that I can eventually get a new one that is quiet. I think that I will stick with mine for a month or so and then bring it back. Hopefully the issue will have been addressed by apple by then and there will be no more squealing imacs. I have applecare and should have no issue getting it replaced, again!

Yup, I have this same problem with my 21.5 inch. Right away it reminded me of that sound some old TVs make when they are turned off. (of course my biggest pet-peeve sound)

I am REALLY hoping that an update of some sort can fix this as I can't really afford to send my mac away for a week or more.

I am at work so after I am going to play around with brightness and try the Shades thing.

jajo.j: is it the right side of the screen that is more yellow? I notice some color shift with mine where when I'm looking at it on-center, things towards the right appear warmer or more yellow at times. However, if I move my head so I'm looking head on at that side, it looks normal - as if it is a slight shift of color from an angle. I did lots of shifting of my head back and forth... I'll have to compare to one in the store now to see if that's how they all are.

It sounds like yours is more severe though.

I have a brand new, fresh from Apple, 21.5-inch iMac. And guess what, it makes as high-pitched whistle noise! It's only at the top three brightness settings, and the sound is very quiet and VERY high pitched. The noise gets higher in pitch, the brighter you set the screen.

You definitely wouldn't be able to hear this noise in an Apple Store, because there's too much ambient noise there. And you definitely won't be able to hear this noise if you're of a certain age, because it's the kind of frequency that only younger ears can pick up on.

So what do I do? I really don't want to return this iMac. It's brand new. Is this something that Apple can fix via a software update? Perhaps ALL of the new iMacs do this, and they will ALL be fixed via a software update?
