Can font names be changed?

I'm not even sure that this is the proper place to post this, but can a font name be changed in Word for Mac 2004? The font drop down list is very long, and if often-used fonts could be renamed so that alphabetically they fell at the top of the list, it would really be convenient.

This is generally not at all a good idea, as the operating system and many applications expect fonts to have certain names and have been installed in accordance with rules invoked by installer scripts in very specific locations.

Moving or renaming fonts is a sure way to create all sorts of problems. There are a number of OS X compatible font utilities which might address your concerns, including FontExplorer X Pro and Suitcase Fusion. But, working with fonts can be a daunting task, with disastrous, difficult to reverse outcomes. I would suggest that you adapt to the idiosyncrasies of Microsoft Word—and, there are many—or find a different word processing application.

Here is a guide to font issues generally in OS X, published by Apple.
