iPhone 3G will not sync - no error messages

Hi, I cannot get my iPhone 3G to sync on either of my two PC's (both running XP). I have iTunes 9.0.1 installed. I have uninstalled iTunes on one machine, rebooted the PC and installed iTunes again - still no joy. No message appears on iPhone or on PC. Have rebooted iPhone several times using soft key and on/off key. Have rebooted PC. Both PCs have "services.msc" started. Under devmgmt.msc, device is not seen under USB Controllers. Have tested USB by connecting iPod - which is immediately detected.
Please let me know what else there is to try...

OK, so it's not the cable. When you say you can see all of the iPhone content in Windows Explorer, are you sure it's ALL? You SHOULD be able to see photos in the camera roll, but nothing else. The iPhone presents as 2 devices, a digital camera and an iPhone/iPod. You should not see any of the iPhone content unless the phone is jailbroken or the OS is hopelessly corrupt.

At this point I suggest a complete removal of iTunes and a reinstall. For removal see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925?viewlocale=en_US. Don't skip any steps, and reboot after finishing. Then download a fresh copy of iTunes from http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and install it. This will install fresh copies of the iPhone drivers as well as the app. Note that if you have Quicktime Pro you will have to re-enter your registration code.

Thanks for the link and info Lawrence. I followed the steps exactly and uninstalled iTunes, rebooted, downloaded a fresh version of iTunes. I can still see iPhone attached to USB port, but not in iTunes!! So frustrating!
I did notice after uninstalling iTunes per instructions that on reboot I got an eRAgent error:
"an invalid argument was encountered". Have you ever seen this error before??

Have changed all Apple programs to full access - no difference.
Acer eRAgent - came up after I ran a fixit4me utility provided by Microsoft. Think it is evidence of something looking for a program that is no longer there (after unintalling as per previous post).
My general iPhone problem on both Acer and Toshiba so think the error message is a red herring. All the same running full virus scan on Acer to check it out.
Will let you know what the genius bar guy says tomorrow...:-)

Hi All,

The geniusbar guys couldn't seem my iPhone either - so not a cable or pc problem. They suspect a corrupted O/S on the iPhone. Next step is (as suggested earlier in the thread) to do a Restore.
Am now manually capturing all contacts that were not backed up previously and will then try that. If that doesn't work the genius guy has said it is likely that the iPhone will have to be replaced.
It may take some time to get contacts done - but will post after Restore to let you know if it worked.
Thanks to everyone for your contributions to the thread!

dont bother manually getting contacts if you still have access to the appstore.

"Contacts Sync" its free and super easy and fast too.

Install this free contact backup program. I used it to move from a 2g to a 3g. Unfortunately the 3g took a little swim in a cup. Now it will not charge on anything but the old 2g wall charger. But it doesn't say its charging, i have to reboot it to see that it charged. No computer will read it. I tested another motherboard/logic board in it and it will charge and sync in that one. so i think you may be in the same boat.

If apple wont replace it for free than you can try getting a new logic board from ebay or someone else broken iphone...
