iPhone 3G will not sync - no error messages

Hi, I cannot get my iPhone 3G to sync on either of my two PC's (both running XP). I have iTunes 9.0.1 installed. I have uninstalled iTunes on one machine, rebooted the PC and installed iTunes again - still no joy. No message appears on iPhone or on PC. Have rebooted iPhone several times using soft key and on/off key. Have rebooted PC. Both PCs have "services.msc" started. Under devmgmt.msc, device is not seen under USB Controllers. Have tested USB by connecting iPod - which is immediately detected.
Please let me know what else there is to try...

Does your iPhone appear in iTunes when connecting to the computer? If so, depending on what you are syncing let's just say applications; select your Device, iPhone, in your Devices list then goto Applications and make sure the "sync applications" box is checked, hit Apply then Sync. If it is Applications you are looking to Sync, make sure Installing Apps in Restrictions is set to ON as well.

Repeat the process if you are looking to sync specifics, such as Contacts, Music etc. 🙂 I hope this helps

Open the task manager (ctrl-alt-esc) and see if AppleMobileDeviceService.exe shows on the Process tab. If it isn't go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services and look for it there. As it isn't running try starting it (right click/Start). If that fixes it you need to find out why it isn't starting on boot, but that's the next step. Your security software could be blocking it.

ok try this plug in to itunes hold the power button and the home button down at the same time till itunes say it has found a phone in restore mode follow the on screen prompts. now restore your phone as a new phone see if that works.

I don't think this is a good idea; the phone works now, just doesn't sync. What you are recommending will force the phone into Recovery mode, and it it isn't able to connect it will be bricked.

No, the iPhone does not appear in iTunes at all - so the problem is before the sync process.
Thanks for the response though!
Any other ideas...?
PS I should mention that the cable I use to connect is the same one I use to recharge the battery - so it appears to be working normally.
I also checked following advice further down post that AppleMobileDeviceService.exe is running in Windows Task Manager...

Yes a restore is a last resort I did lose all my info and before I synced I had to redownload all my apps if iTunes is working and your music and apps are their they will go back on the phone all you would have to do is put your contacts back on I know it's a pain but I think it's the only choice I was right where you are frustrated and ****** exspecialy when tech support had we wipe my hard drive and that did not fix the problem I wish you luck and hope you get it fixed.

Thanks Beagleman.
I have now also run sfc/scannow to check all Windows XP system files in order and present. No problems detected.
Have booked a session with a genius at genuis bar for tomorrow!
I really hope to get resolved as I have a huge number of contacts and they took forever to load in the first place!!!! Wish I had backed up more recently 😟
Thanks to everyone for comments so far.

Okay...here's the latest update.
I couldn't see the iPhone USB connected in My Computer so I plugged in another USB stick to check which drive letter it got. Then I went to Microsoft and ran a Microsoft Fix IT tool found at: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925196/en-us#fixit4me.
After the FixIt I rebooted and attached Usb of iPhone and the pc could see it. I then reinstalled iTunes - but it still does not see it. But I can see all the content of the iPhone under the PC USB connection. The investigation continues...
