Aww Geez, editing bay working perfectly until this morning, no changes made

Aww Geez, editing bay working perfectly until this morning, no changes made. FCP freezes on startup just when all the windows come up (blank) on last project closed. I've tried the usual suspects(prefs, data folder) all short of reinstall, which I do not want to do. I DO have a working clone from last night's backup that works just fine. I can always clone back, and that will fix FCP but only Buddha knows what else will break restoring fully from a CCC clone in Snow Leopard (untested as of yet). I had worked all week prior cleaning up the console messages with good results in preparation or running a test of the proapp update (FCP 7.01, etc.) but now I am in a hole. The one thing I have not done is to isolate plugins, in case one of those files went belly up (btw, I did run Disk Warrior). But I am not sure where they are all stored...seems to be scattered here and there. Anyone have any ideas on what files I could try and replace from the clone that might fix this? It looks like an FCP interface boot problem, here is the console messages (new since problem arose):

Sorry, u guys are too slow:) I fixed by cloning back everything but home and apps directory, so the problem was something in the rest. I guess i'll never know, but I am back online - which is what matters to me.

Not sure if a FCP recovery app would have helped me here, but certainly open to the idea now!

Well, chalk up having a system "that can be restored quickly" is from the school of hard knocks. Our studio almost went under during the 10.4->.5 timeframe when we were switching from PCs to Macs, and then from one OS to another. It was a nightmare I told everyone we would never repeat again.

But now this, only on one editing bay that was certified okay using 10.6.1 and FCS 3.0 (official release).

The problem came back, and is not related to above posted console events (or at least, the backup runs fine with those same messages).

It seems that on the internal drive, FCP will fully load up to the point where it has to display clip thumbnails and window contents for the viewer and browser. Then it beachballs into oblivion.

The way we have this machine setup is that all content is on externals. The only thing on the internal imac drive is the project file itself, and the apps. So FCP runs fine when booted from an external drive (the cloned backup) and not when booted from the internal drive. FCP noticeably comes up slower on the internal drive then when run from the external clone. Arg.

So what could it be? Somesorta permission problem? Bla. I've run Disk Warrior on all disks, no problems there. Undetected hardware problem on the internal drive? Bla. Then why would it work when I get clone back the working copy? Bla bla.

I'm stuck!

How about thumbnail cache and waveforms, are they also on the internal drive or the external? Either way, you might want to try trashing those folders altogether and letting FCP write you some new ones just in case.

Also along the just in case lines, hold down "shift" whilst you launch FCP7 and it'll open up without trying to load any old existing project (just in case its anything at all to do with an existing project's media causing the problem).

Andy, those were both great ideas, but still have the hang on load of a new "Untitled Project 1" in the same place. My choices now seem to be a reinstall per http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1846?viewlocale=en_US or clone back the working image from my nightly backup (again). Both options seem hazardous, and the uninstall procedure is looking nuts to me...find the receipts, check timestamps? How about an uninstaller Apple!:) But please, suggest alternatives that make more sense for a customized editing bay that ALMOST works perfectly...

UPDATE! My problem is not a hang per se, just a TEN minute load time for a blank project. The interface comes up in about 3 minutes, and then it takes another 7 or so for the beach ball to go away. So I am sure there is someone here who has seen this and has a fix:) thx. My gut tells me the internal drive may be at fault, but it passes all tests, including Disk Warrior, and I have no problems with any other app...like C4D, CS4, all the other gunk...

It sounds very much like FCP is trying to load up some network attached resources or similar (which are no longer available) and everything is just waiting before the operation times out ... due to FCPs single threaded design, if and when FCP is waiting for a trivial response from a request/call then the whole app just hangs until that operation not so gracefully gives up the ghost after which FCP carries on regardless (aka operation timing out)

I seem to recall annoying issues in the past when FCP refuses to forget about such resources ... and more to the point, that a good old fashioned preference trashing didn't shift it. It may be that a reinstall is the only sane way forward. Digital Rebellion's free FCS Remover app is the missing uninstaller that Apple forgot.

Hi again, thx for another excellent suggestion. I do see FCP trying to make a few connections, none of which make sense - unless Apple is calling home on the 172. IP addresses here:

I think I will try FCS Remover (Receipts only) and reinstall and see what happens. I always have that perfectly fine working backup on the clone drive:)

A reinstall following the APPLE procedure of removing recipets did not work. I used FCS Remover, and removed them all for the entire suite, as Motion is doing the same thing - stalling for 10 minutes and then resuming business - and that did nothing. I am not sure what to do at this point, except go to the clone. As I don't have TimeMachine running (eats up way too much space) all the work - which was pretty much zilch, will be lost for today. It seems no matter if you are careful (as I was with this set of boxes) or careless (as I have been in the past), computers always break. I had this working perfectly for about a month (when did FCS 3 come out again?), so I guess I should count my blessings.

Don't have a clue, but it must be something in your setup. I do not experience this problem.

Do you have any IT support?

I'd suggest that you check out your firewall settings in the system preferences: security.

Your scratch disk isn't setup across a network is it?

hi, thx again for trying here...all our scratch, content, etc is local externals. our lan is really tight, as this is Nepal, and baddies are everywhere. Looks like I just need to turn off airport, start FCP or Motion, and then I am in business. I can then turn airport back on and read the NYT. Not a big deal really, if I post a big signboard on top of the monitors, or something like that. But worrisome, as it just started happening out of the blue. I hate things like this...they are maddening and time consuming, eh? Well, thx again for getting me this far, and thx to all the posters here who are very helpful indeed!
