Aww Geez, editing bay working perfectly until this morning, no changes made. FCP freezes on startup just when all the windows come up (blank) on last project closed. I've tried the usual suspects(prefs, data folder) all short of reinstall, which I do not want to do. I DO have a working clone from last night's backup that works just fine. I can always clone back, and that will fix FCP but only Buddha knows what else will break restoring fully from a CCC clone in Snow Leopard (untested as of yet). I had worked all week prior cleaning up the console messages with good results in preparation or running a test of the proapp update (FCP 7.01, etc.) but now I am in a hole. The one thing I have not done is to isolate plugins, in case one of those files went belly up (btw, I did run Disk Warrior). But I am not sure where they are all stored...seems to be scattered here and there. Anyone have any ideas on what files I could try and replace from the clone that might fix this? It looks like an FCP interface boot problem, here is the console messages (new since problem arose):

Could be a 3rd party plugin trying to phone home to authorise ... or something waiting for your input? During this launch hang have you checked to see if there are any other windows that may be hidden / obscured? For example, when I launch FCP with the demo version of Tiffen DFX filter collection installed then I am presented with a window during the app startup that wants me to choose how I want those filters handled. That is clearly happening during plugin launch for me tho, whilst your hang seems to happen at a later stage in the app launch process. What FCS based 3rd party software & hardware based extras have you installed on that edit system that is hanging? You noted that its only just started happening ... its possible a demo period has expired maybe, or perhaps such an extra just phones home as a matter of course and something on their backend has gone screwy so is not providing a correct response?

Whilst you are in troubleshooting mode, create a brand new user account for that workstation, log in to it, then see if the same app launch issues persist.

Thx Andy, another great idea. But creating a new user account produces the same results...10 minute startups of both Motion and FCP, with same console messages. BTW, I tend not to put trials of software on this machine, as its a production box, but u know those engineers:) Still, I've excluded the standard plugin directory, and even pulled the common system audio plugs, but still no dice. This is making the signboard and scotch tape solution look better all the time...such a time consumer eh? Well, keep those ideas coming...this thread is looking like a complete FCP diagnostic tour now.

yes, the usual suspects, growl & other helpers that never hurt before nor have been updated to my knowledge...back to the network thingee, I can see in my network monitor that FCP is wanting to call 192.168.2.255 repeatedly over and over AND over again. that's our Lan, but not part of the valid address pool in the router (wtfrack?!?). Anyway, i am sitting here staring at outgoing traffic, and that's all I see except for an initial ping to 172.16.144.255, which is an apple server. However, the ping to my router continues as long as FCP is open, and after the now requisite 10 minute startup time.

on system prefs login items, the only odd thing there is CNQL1208_ButtonManager which i remember researching a long time ago, and concluded that i needed, but can't remember now what it is...some canon printer/scanner fluff as i recall.

Plifff.

Well everyone, thx for your help - I FIGURED IT OUT...whoohoo!!!

I went back and asked everyone who had touched the machine in the past week if they had done anything strange (other then airbrush pimples off models) and I found out that one editor had firewire networked his laptop to the machine in order to copy some files over faster, I guess nothing unreasonable. But, that in combination with this machines dedicated PPoE to the internet, plus a WiFi to the Lan, was blowing Snow's mind. Creating a new network location and NOT configuring the firewire network solved the problem. What the hay!?! But anyway, I gave the "solved" to Micheal just for the shear number of helps he tried. The tip on turning the network on and off is what eventually made my mind synapse, and connect the two events (FCP/Internet). Now I can get back to work and try and break all our machines with the FCP 7.0.1 update just released. Cheers all!!!
