ACD 30" and PC Video Cards

Chris Auld created an excellent thread for the 20" and 23" Cinema Displays with PC Video Cards. I wanted to do the same for the ACD 30" and PC Video Cards.

There have been numerous posts on the topic of using the ACD 30" with PC video cards, but they are inconsistent.

Note: The Apple 30" Cinema display runs at 2560x1600 and requires Dual-Link DVI, which is not the same as Dual DVI.

I'd like to request posting specifics using this template ...

Dua link DVI: 1 per card (lower one)
OS: WinXP SP2
Displays POST info: yes
Reolution: 2560x1600 in SLI (haven't tried the driver for it to run lower resolutions)
Comments: Half Life 2 is simply amazing in SLI at max resolution. I periodically get the flickering green snow, but shutting the monitor off and turning it back on clears it. I do hope that the driver allows for lower resolutions so I can run stuff like Battlefield 2 fullscreen

Comments : no "special tuning", just after installing nvidia drivers I can set the highest resolution. Motherboard: Gigabyte K8N Ultra-9, non SLI.

Hi Pete, I have the possibility to choose from 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x800, 1600x900 and 2560x1600 most at 59 or 60 Hz under Monitor settings.

The use of WinACD recognized the name of the monitor (driver) plus gave me the possibility to use the USB port to control the monitor brightness and the power button functions (just as in a Mac). Now everything in Windows XP Device Manager is working fine.

The only problem with the Gigabyte 7800GTX (aside the price) is that it gets pretty hot so I directed a blower over it!!

I am thinking of dashing out now to get one before the shop closes at 5pm, I'll also need a mainboard to support PCi Express, but like always I am much too hasty. Last time I went crazy and bought the Wildact Realizm 200 only to find it won't run games. I have just read the spec on the 7800 GTX and it looks like it leaves the 6800 ultra well behind. I couldn't make my mind up which one to go for, but I'm thinking more towards the 7800.

Could you please tell me which one it is you got from this list? This shop is about 12 miles from me so I can go get it now.

I'm fighting the temptation too - to order a 30" ACD, 7800GT, mobo & AMD X2!

From the earlier posts looks like the Asus 7800GTX is the one to go for - it also seems to do 1920x1600 which some of the others apparently don't.

But Scan don't have that one in stock! I guess you just need to avoid the GT (kind of a slightly cut down GTX) which afaik it doesn't have a dual link port.

I would buy the cheapest one from Gigabyte or any brand that makes the 7800 GTX (has to be GTX) but it depends on your needs, if you do need Video In and Video Out (VIVO) or not. All brands should work fine. The basic card comes with a HDTV connector and an adapter for the 6pin power increment to connect to the PSU.

Wey hey, just got back from Scan, I got the Asus KN84E Deluxe and the 7800 GTX Gigabyte (not the overclocked or gamers version) Both have just set me back £409.13pence. I honestly could have sworn I give him the correct amount in cash as I laid it out on the counter in a set of 4 x 100pounds in twenty's and a tenner, he said I only gave him £310...I had well over a grand in notes but not sure how much as I just grabbed it and put it in my pocket, so I won't know if he's ripped me off for a ton 😟

Loads of messing and mauling to do now cuz I have to refit the Thermaltake Aquarius water cooler aswell. I'll also water cool the Grahpics card soon.

I'll let you know how it goes, should have it built tonight :))

PERFECT, all is well, I should be happy with this setup for a couple of years now, its well Future Proof.

I got free video editing and capture software, just having trouble getting it to recognize my cctv camera for video capture, but I think I'll suss it.

Nando, now I have it all up and running, I want to use my vivo, so I connected the card up to my movie camera via the adaptor supplied with 6 ports. I run the software that came with the card (I assume you also got Power Director) but power Director only recognises the audio and not the camera, all the other options are ghosted. Did/have you have this problem? I've been at it 2 days now configuring every conceivable thing, no joy! I have my camera plugged into the yellow port.

Other than Asus Gamer Edition and the GTO, are there any other Geforce 6 series card that is can run the 30" proper (optimum resolution etc)?

The PNY 6600GT AGP (U.S. version) is a 6-series card that runs the 30" ok. Compared to the Asus, its only a bit slower, has a clean bootscreen, and can actually drive 2 30" displays.

Have you looked at the 512MB 6800Ultras? They're supposed to work - I think there was an old post with someone that had successfully made it happen. They are kinda pricey though.

This page for a 256MB card even says you need the 512MB card to work with the 30"

Thanks for the response, but unless I'm mistaken the ASUS V9999Ultra and the NVIDA 512MB cards have been all been discontinued for AGP. I'm seeing some PCI Express cards out there but that's no help.

Maybe a better question would be: If I buy a 6800Ultra card which supports 2560 x 1600, will this card be able to drive the Apple Monitor at any resolution?
