After reading other threads on here, I've learned that my USB card reader, printer's card reader, and Dell laptop are all not SDHC compatible. That's all it was. Bought a $9 SDHC compatible card reader and now everything works!
I have been using a Sandisk reader for some time, but it will not recognize the new 16GB card (Sandisk Extreme SC HC). Nor will it work from the Canon G11. I used a 1Ds3 to copy files to a cf card and it worked fine. No suggestion above has worked.
Any news from Apple? Different reader? Other threads?
I too am having this issue with my 27" imac (I7). SD cards in the built-in slot are not regognized - insert the card, nothing happens. If I reboot while a card is in there, I do see it on the desktop and in finder and it works OK. If I eject properly and then insert another - no dice. All osx software is up to date. I see now though, that I'm using 4GB and 8GB sdhc cards. I'm going to see if I can dig up a smaller capacity card and see if that plays better.
I use 4, 8 and 16 GB SDHC cards without problems ... so it must be something with the cards or your machine. My cards are formatted as FAT32 by a device my company sells.
I reformat my cards in each camera I use them in. I have never had a problem before.
I've narrowed it down to (1) I need a different reader, and have ordered one. or (2) something in the hardware or in OSX is having trouble with the sd hc cards and needs a firmware or driver update? The computer needs to be able to read multiple formats.
I received an Iogear 52 in one card reader (and USB Hub). A 16 Gig SD HC card immediately showed up on the desktop, and no problems. Must be that the old reader couldn't handle the sd hc? Anyway, just ordered one more of their readers, and another reader with hub.
27" imac, i7. When I boot up with the card in place, it appears on the desktop. Reads files, no problems. Eject properly, try other cards, no go. It just never mounts it from then on. Called apple support - tried booting to install DVD; Same deal using disk utility. This confirmed to them that it was a hardware issue, not software. So they are sending me a new imac. I have a dead pixel too so I guess it's for the best. But fortunately they are doing the advanced replacement. They send you the new one, THEN you send the other one back. They take a credit card as collateral so you don't skip town 🙂 but at least I don't have to be without the machine for days/weeks.
Hi twinharbor,
did a replacement solved the problem? I have the same problem but didn't call the apple support yet. Would like to know whether it is really a hardware problem because otherwise I don't have to save all my data and leet them replace the iMac.
Unfortunately for me, I've already sent yet another replacement back. When I got it, I turned it on next to this one and immediately I saw the screen was yellow. It also had 3 pixels out. I called and arranged yet another exchange. This time I kept the one with the bad sd card slot (for now) since it works and has a good screen otherwise. So why bother transferring everything? But I did check the SD card slot on the one with the yellow screen and it worked just fine. Pop a card in and within a few seconds (2-3) the card mounted and appeared on the desktop. So, definitely was hardware on mine. Of course, imac #4 is scheduled to arrive thursday. Let's see if they can get me a working machine this time... Not sure if it's because this is a new model or what but 3 bad machines in a row seems to go beyond bad luck. Apple quality control maybe needs some work.
thanks for quick replay. wish you good luck for the new maschine. i'll contact the apple support and hope i get a good replacement and not another bad one like you got.
My new iMac 21.5" also have the same problem, I've test my SD card, it works fine and can be recognize at the first time when I plug it into the internal SD slot and it can recognize it, but when I plug it in again later, it cannot recognize it. Now I have to use my USB card reader to transfer my photos into my Mac. Is it a bug??? Wish Apple can solve this quickly, so annoying!
Same problem here with a brand new iMac 27" i5. Card was recognized for about a week, now only the first time inserted after reboot.
Tried different SD Cards, 64mb, 2GB, 4GB. PC reads them immediately, no problem at all.
Mac does recognize the SD card when you boot up from the OS Install DVD, so it seems to be a software issue.
Strange strange.
I do not know why, but card readers from iogear work fine with my macs. This doesn't explain the camera problem, but at least I get my pictures on the computer.
