itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close.

The first thing I check for with that one is a broken QuickTime. (iTunes for Windows needs a fully functional QuickTime in order to work correctly.)

So, try launching your QuickTime. Does it open okay, or do you get an error message or other odd behavior when you try to launch QuickTime?

Hi, Thanks for your response. I tried to launch Quicktime and your right I get the same error message.I tried that the other day and I thought it did open. Also today I went into install/uninstall and clicked on change for itunes thinking that maybe it was not installed corectly. I got a message saying Find itunes installation package 'itunes.msi' in a folder from which you can install the product itunes. I searched for that and then clicked on it and it said to first run setup.exe. I searhed for that and 11 different folders showed up and I tried to open all of them and kept getting an error message.
I did not know if any of this information would help. But no quicktime is not working either. Thanks again.

Righty-ho. Sounds like we've got both a broken QuickTime and problems with the iTunes installation configuration information going on.

I'd better check on a possible cause (and complication) of that before we proceed. (It'll save us time in the long run.) By any chance have you ever installed a Codec pack (in particular, ACE or K-Lite Mega Codec packs) or a copy of the programs QT Alternative, QT Lite, Storm Codec or WinAVI converter, or some other kind of software that can convert video files to or from QuickTime-readable format?

(These programs can install "QuickTime" componentry that can cause iTunes and QuickTime to fail to launch or install.)

Hi, sorry to say I got the same error message on itunes and quicktime after I did all the steps in the post. I was not able to unistall quicktime through install/unistall from the control panel. I was able to delete it once I downloaded Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. Then I went and found program files, and deleted
the itunes and quicktime folders. I was not able to locate Quicktime and Quicktime VR in C;\windows\system32\folder to delete them.
Then I did the rest and same thing.
Thanks again for your help. I really do not know what to do now.

Hmmmm.

Okay, head into your control panels again. Try clicking on the QuickTime control panel.

Do you get an error message then? If so, note down the precise text of the message and post back with it. (That may give us a further heads-up on the precise nature of the QuickTime problem.)

(I have to head off and do something for a few hours, but I'll try to check back in here later tonight (New Zealand time) to look for your reply.

So here goes. I clicked on Quicktime in the control panel and it opened. So I clicked on each tab, they all opened except for file type. I got an error message.

Rundll:

an exception occurred while trying to run
"C:WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll,control_RunDLL"C:\PROGRAMFILES\quicktime\QTsyste m
\Quicktime.cpl",Quicktime"

I hope that is right. Some words capitalized, some not.

Also I get another error message when I restart my computer. I do not know if it's related to the itunes, quicktime problem or not.

This says:

Error 126
Provide bca (not sure if bca is right, I cannot read my writing)
unable to load license key
license key invalid
validation library
Then I click ok
next window says
license key recorded on system is

welt-xcccxx-xcgrh-rkliy
Please check that this key matches the key you received when you ordered this product
it also says in the box on the top right side computer associates.
I do not think they are affiliated with itunes/quicktime
I copied that down about 3 weeks ago, I hope I wrote it correctly if not and you think they are related, I will restart and write it down again
But I do not remembering purchasing anything from quicktime or itunes except for songs. Maybe they are not even related. The issue on restart happened before the itunes problem. Let me know what you think.
Just wondering do you think I will ever be able to install itunes at all. All my music is in my music file in my documents so if I lost it, I should have all of them. I just wonder how I could ever add different songs, I don't think there is any other way to use an ipod without itunes.

Thanks again for your time, I really appreciate it. I really don't know what else to do.
What is the time difference? When I finished this reply the time here is:
11:55 pm, Tuesday 10/27.
Just curious.

Hi,
Thanks for helping.
I believe I am the only user as far as the computer thinks. When I put the computer in standby, then go to use it again my name is the only one listed. Other people do use the computer and have email accounts but I bought the computer.
I will check out what you sent to read, in a few hours or so, then send feedback.
Thanks again.

Ok, what you need to do is:

1. From the Start menu, choose Control Panel.
2. Open User Accounts.
3. Select Create a new account and follow the instructions to complete the account setup process.
4. Once the new account is created, choose Log Off from the Start menu.
5. Log into the newly created user account.
6. Open iTunes and determine whether the issue you were experiencing persists in this new user.

Then try opening iTunes on the new user account. Let me know what happens.

Ok, this means that the issue is system wide. Let's try these steps:

1) Are you using any anti-virus software? If so, make sure it is up-to-date. If possible, I would recommend disabling it, better yet would be to remove it off the computer completely. Is the issue still happening?

2) If it is, the issue may lie with the iTunes Configuration file. Follow this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1776.

3) If it is still happening after that, put your computer into a selective startup which is shown in this article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1275. Try opening iTunes. If it still happens when under MSCONFIG then you may have an issue with the installation of iTunes. Go through this article http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1925.

If after all that the issue is still happening let me know.
