Mail Keeps losing Passwords

I am continually asked for my passwords for Mail. I am using Comcast.net. Even locking them in keychain doesn't help. Anybody having the same problems and a solution. Comcast doesn't seem to know much about OSX.

Having asked if anyone had a fix for this, I thought I'd have another play around with my POP account settings, and I seem to have solved my particular issue. In the Advanced tab of the Account settings the 'Authentication' choice list had been set to 'APOP' and not 'password' as it should have been.....so far so good with my accounts at least.

Thanks for the detailed instructions and the path to the prefs file. Thanks to the excellence of OS X I have not had to trash prefs in a long time.

But the advice "no password for SMTP" doesn't work for me with Comcast in SE Pennsylvania. When configured initially from a new prefs file, the port came up as 995 (I think) with SSL encryption. SMTP took a long time with Comcast's mail server during setup/verification, but I do not remember seeing any error messages once it was done. Could have missed it. But it did not work when trying to send my first outgoing message.

Anyways, I changed to port 110, but I had to provide my username and password (no SSL) to be able to send mail. This is the first time I have trashed the prefs file, but after reading the posts I don't have high hopes. My experience has been almost identical to the other entries - "click ignore" works, has happened over time a lot. Only thing with me is I am still at OS 10.4.11.

And yes, "rebuilding" with a new prefs file automatically restores all the old mailboxes. I thought I had to use the "import mailboxes" feature, but eventually I just clicked "Cancel" (there's no Back button) and Mail loaded with all my folders intact.
